Video: Georges St. Pierre issues injury update, still 'very limited'

"Hi everyone! I'm back in Montreal for the weekend. I just started training gymnastics again. I'm very limited in what I can do but I had a great workout. Pat prepared a great training program for me. I'll see everyone next weekend in Las Vegas for the fight, Condit [vs.] Diaz."

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre, who was forced to put his 170-pound strap behind glass while he rehabs a surgically repaired knee, gives fans a brief update on his road to recovery as he (and the rest of the mixed martial arts community) gears up for the UFC 143: "Condit vs. Diaz" pay-per-view (PPV) event this Saturday night (Feb. 4, 2012) at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. One of the two headliners, Nick Diaz or Carlos Condit, will not only win the division's Interim strap, but also solidify themselves as the next opponent for "Rush" when he returns later this year. Is this the beginning of the end for the St. Pierre dynasty? Or just a bump in the road?

To be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing the winner of the up coming Diaz/Condit fight defend their title once.

Because i don’t think either guy will beat him so it would be nice to get a taste of what it would be like to see someone else have the WW belt.

I'd like to see a champ who fights six times a year

At the post-fight press conference, Chael Sonnen said he didn’t understand why UFC fighters fight so few times a year (a point I examined in an earlier fanpost). According to Sonnen, he fought over 60 times a year as an amateur, and thinks there should be a UFC event every weekend.

I absolutely agree. It’s just silly for top fighters to fight only 2-3 times a year. This is your job- you have no other. So what do you do the other 362 days of the year? No wonder some of them are taking to modelling to make ends meet.

by Motmaitre on Jan 30, 2012 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

They got a lot more fighters now a days

I think 3-4 times a year is a good number, up and coming fighters need their opportunity to get in there and make something happen for themsevles too.

More fighters means more opportunities and opponents to fight. Up-and-comers vs. other up-and-comers or veterans. More cards, more fights, more money. If you’re a professional fighter, then fight.

I won't ever complain about too much MMA

But it’s hard keeping up with the sport now a days as is. With a fight on damn near every weekend this year that’s about all the MMA I have time for. So IMO, we’re at the right # of shows that there should be and there’s enough fighters out there to keep the match ups fresh and interesting. There’s only a hand full of fighters that I wouldn’t mind seeing fight all the time. What I don’t want to see is the same group of guys fighting on every other card.

I live in America! Land of the coward, home of the slave. There’s only a hand full of fighters that I wouldn’t mind seeing fight all the time

Same here- and those are precisely the ones who should fight all the time. When a big name fighter fights more frequently, that’s more revenue for the UFC, plus more entertainment for the fans. I wouldn’t mind seeing interesting fighters like Jones, Machida or Cung Le fighting six times a year each- and this would make them get better, faster. Fighting so infrequently is a waste of a great resource.

by Motmaitre on Jan 30, 2012 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

Once again you display your ignorance on this sport.

Do you know how long it takes to train for a specific fight? The recovery time needed after the fight?

You are (as usual) ignoring far too many, and what should be obvious, variables. These guys are not machines, and too expect them to fight more than 3-4 times (props to Jones) a year is just ridiculous given the level of competition they are facing.

Ignorance is a heavy affliction

Boxers typically fight 6-10 times a year early in their careers. When Chael Sonnen- who whould know what he’s talking about, complains about fighters fighting too few times a year, and Rashad also said he is ready to fight right away, this should have some weight.

The issue here is weak thinking caused by anchoring bias. Just because something is the way it is doesn’t mean it is the only way it can be.

K-1 champs fight three times in ONE DAY to win the tournament. A fighter should always be in training. Serious fighters (of which there are only a few in the UFC) regularly train everyday. As long as you don’t get injured, fighting every 8 weeks is not only feasible, but any less is silly.

by Motmaitre on Jan 30, 2012 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

But fighters need a good training camp to peak.

Also, how can they prevent a burn out if they fight and train so often?

Now, count up your crimes!

by Cyclonejoker on Jan 30, 2012 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

Training 2-3 hours a day is normal for any serious martial artist- especially if you are under 30. If you do this regularly, why would you burn out? A typical fight lasts what- 20 minutes on average? Many last far less. Most fighters who win exit the ring able to fight again the same night- talking about taking 4-5 months to recover is just silly.

Even Jones decided to come back because he missed fighting. Real fighters fight. A 20 minute fight every 2 months is nothing for a fit athlete- as most boxers will tell you.

Yes, big difference. Boxers fight 10, 12, 15 rounds. MMA fighters fight 3 rounds and are gassed after 2 minutes.

Seems obvious to me which is more rigorous. Perhaps if MMA fighters spent more time actually fighting, they might have the same conditioning as boxers.

Anyone can do that stupid shit to try and make an argument for w/e they want. No one’s arguing that it absolutley CAN’T be done, what they’re trying to say is it SHOULD NOT be done, for a shit load of different reasons. Fighters get injured, fighters get burnt out, fans might even get burnt out on seeing the same group of fighters every other event etc.. It’s not fair to the fighters who can fight less and make more $$ and it’s not fair to the up and comers who want to be on the main televised portion of a card and have their chance to get into the spotlight either.

I can think of plenty of reasons why the schedules these guys kept back in the day or at a local level DO NOT HAPPEN anymore in the UFC.

So can it be done? Possibly, who knows how many of these guys end up injured in training or turn in listless performances because they need a break. Should it be done? Definatley not.

Thanks for proving my point

Look at Rampage’s frequency of fighting before and after he joined the UFC. My point (same as Chael Sonnen’s point) is that the UFC makes fighters fight too infrequently.

I like how, faced with facts, you and your girlfriends have changed your argument. First it was ’That’s impossible- Motmaitre is an idiot!’ to ‘Well yes, it’s possible, but it shouldn’t happen.’

All your reasons why it shouldn;t happen are invalidated by the fact that it happens everywhere except the UFC. Yes fighters get injured- but that is the exception, not the rule. A healthy fighter should fight much more than 2-3 times a year. He can do it easily, and it is good business.

Just to deliver a final knockout punch to you and your girlfriends, I give you Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira:

6 fights in 2000
6 fights in 2001
5 fights in 2002
5 fights in 2004 and 2006

- and then the UFC got him, and turned him into a couch potato.

I also don't know why you think posting a fighters # of fights in the years you're cherry picking mean anything.

That doesn’t add anything to your argument and isn’t even relevant to this debate. You can post as many #‘s up there as you want, it still doesn’t change the fact that the frequency in fighting that you’re asking for is not realistic in the UFC at this time.

Not only is there no incentive for a fighter at the UFC level to put themselves through an unnecessary rigorous schedule and not have a life. It’s also stupid to assume that every fan of MMA wants to see the same guys fighting over and over and over again on every other card they tune into.

Gotta agree with Motmaitre you guys are definitely smoking some shit

Fighters can fight more but the UFC model as well as the fighters paychecks stop them from doing so. Mayweather doesnt fight often anymore because of how huge his paychecks are he could fight alot more if he wanted to hes more then capable of it.

I think 4 times a year is perfect 6 would be pushing it a bit. To many champs in the ufc only fight twice a damn year which is stupid as hell they dont even fight the 3 times that Dana always says they do.

So yeah fighters should be fighting 4-5 times in a year beyond that of course is pushing it to far your body does need rest otherwise injuries happen. Fighters also tend to fight best when they dont have alot of time off.

If you dont like drugs then dont do them.....give them to me!

by Khaos_Warrior on Jan 30, 2012 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

My point is it's dumb to think anyone is going to be willing to do that if they're in the UFC

Not to mention everything else posted as to why it’s not a good idea. You’ve also got accumulated dmg, small injuries that add up and put a lot of wear and tear on a fighter. If you want to increase the longevity of their carreer it’s better to have them fight less frequently. From an entertainment standpoint, sure, maybe they should fight more. From a practical view of what’s happened in the past vs what’s happening today? IMO, it’s better to give these guys more time off.

They have 10 yrs in the sport competing at the highest lvl if they’re lucky. The more you fight someone and run them into the ground the shorter their carreer is going to be and we’ll all find ourselves wishing so-and-so was still around to fight this new up and comer rising star but he can’t because he’s washed up by 30 yrs old and no one’s interested in over the hill vs new blood.

If the winner of Condit/Diaz defends their belt once, then they will already have a more impressive run than GSP.

by danago on Jan 30, 2012 11:12 AM EST via mobile reply actions

How does that work?

It’s more impressive to defend your belt 5 or 6 times and to make it to the near top or top of the P4P list than to defend the interim once in my opinion.

Now, count up your crimes!

by Cyclonejoker on Jan 30, 2012 11:14 AM EST up reply actions

I’m thinking Ellenberger gets the next shot. A win over over Ellenberger is more impressive than any opponent GSP has fought in his title defense.

If Diaz is to win and defend against Ellenberger, then already in those two fights he has fought better competition.

Or GSP can just beat Diaz and then ellenberger

by ToeLock6 on Jan 30, 2012 11:22 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

We shall see, I just wise Jake Ellenberge was fighting someone who fought more often and actually belonged at WW.

I like Sanchez but he needs to go back to LW, the timing is perfect for it.

Now, count up your crimes!

man you troll hard

how’s your training going with Diaz? You must be getting tired flying around the world helping these guys become the top notch fighters they are.

Upcoming sig bet with OilCan - Diaz/Condit

You’re telling me Condit/Diaz and Ellenberger, aren’t better than Dan Hardy LOL. You must be British, or very delusional.

Bobby Southworth

by danago on Jan 30, 2012 12:29 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Did GSP ask to fight Hardy?

Ellenberger doesn’t impress me much….get past the first round and he’ll run out of steam for the later half of the fight.

You claim you are British…..you say it here all the time. Another one of your web of lies just because you like controversy as your life is boring as hell.

Condit and Diaz are good fighters but they weren’t there to fight GSP a few years ago. Keep on trolling…..

What does GSP asking to fight Hardy have to with anything?

Condit/Diaz and Ellenberger are far more dangerous than Dan Hardy. You can’t dispute that, that’s a fact.

Bobby Southworth

by danago on Jan 30, 2012 12:35 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Agreed.

But beating Koscheck, Hughes, Serra, Fitch, BJ, Alves, Hardy, Koscheck again and Shields on the trott is more impressive than beating Diaz/Condit and Ellenberger.

And it will be even more impressive when Diaz/Condit is added to the aforementioned list of names.

GSP’s run of wins against top competition is unmatched in the UFC, save Bones’ recent 2011 campaign.

you are a moron

I should flag your response just for being a complete and utter tool. You raised the Hardy statement – it had nothing to do with GSP other than that is who the UFC determined was entitled to fight for the belt. Can’t dispute the fact that you are a moron, that’s a fact.

has an interim champ ever fought anyone besides the champ?

I’m not opposed to the idea, but can only remember a few interim belts; gsp before serra rematch and carwin beating mir, that’s all off top of my head. I guess it could happen but the champ would have to be out for a very long time.

I don't think Condit nor Diaz beat GSP

I mean if he beats both of them, than let’s be honest. Who the hell is left? Ellenberger would get the shit jabbed out of him for 5 rounds as would Johnny Hendricks, Erick Silva is a beast but he might get taken down repeatedly with relative ease. If GSP comes back looking dominant……… No one right now can touch him stylistically

I agree

they might be boring, smothering matches, but I don’t think either of the two has what it takes to beat GSP.

Then again, I always bet against Nick and he always proves me wrong.

by HeadKickLegSweep on Jan 30, 2012 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

After Condit and Diaz,

Ellenberger and Rory Mac are all that’s left, IMO. And maybe Erick Silva in a year or two. I’m not putting much stock in Hendricks right now, ‘cause I think Fitch beats him if they fight again. Match his up vs BJ, that’s a fight I’d like to see.

that's a lot of ppl

If the guy only fights 2-4x a year, by the time he’s fought those 4, Silva could be ready easily. By that time more up and comers will be ready and making their marks. Also Diaz could have earned another shot after tearing it up again. So many options it’s hard to say.

Very true.

A division can never truly be wiped out, unless you manage to pull a Bone Jones and wipe out the Top 4 guys so fast that the up-and-comers don’t have time to reach contender status before you move on to greener/heavier pastures.

There’s always new guys coming through. GSP has about a half-dozen forseeable challengers ahead of him.

now he just has to become a male figureskater so he can be athlete of the year again..lol

what they should do

Is make all these fighters fight 2 or 3x a week. That way we know who is the toughest and everyone males more money.

I want to see an 82 fight season per fighter. Like the NHL and the NBA. That way we can have playoffs after that.

This is the only thing that makes sense. And if you can’t fight 90 days out of 365 in a year, clearly you’re a pussy.

You make a very good point.
