UFC on FOX 2 results recap: Rashad Evans vs Phil Davis event wrap up from Chicago
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to the network TV airwaves this past Saturday night (Jan. 28, 2012) with UFC on FOX 2: "Evans vs. Davis," featuring "Suga" Rashad Evans earning a light heavyweight title fight against Jon Jones with a dominant decision victory over Phil Davis.
Chael Sonnen failed to impress in his controversial unanimous decision victory over Michael Bisping. Sonnen's win, although lackluster, sets up one of the biggest rematches in the history of the sport when he takes on Anderson Silva this coming June in Brazil.
And what's there to say about Chris Weidman's performance against Demian Maia? No, really, what's there to say?
In cased you missed any or all of it -- or just want to keep the discussion alive -- below are links to all the major storylines borne from Saturday night's event in Chicago.
In we go.

Still don't understand the negativity around Rashad's performance
He fought the most intelligent, well rounded fight we have seen from him to date. He was calm, methodical, and focused and was never in trouble at any point in the fight. A finish would have made more of a statement but he came out without a scratch on him but I think that title shot was in the back of his mind so he was hesitant to pull the trigger. I doubt he will be so cautious when he faces Jones.
You know what would make a good story? Something about a clown who makes people happy, but inside he's real sad. Also, he has severe diarrhea.
Not to mention the fact he out wrestled someone who was "supposed" to be better in that area
Rashad’s MMA wrestling is far superior than his college wrestling and he’s one of the best MMA wrestlers there are today. I really think this is going to play a huge factor in the fight with Jones. Rashad has never been unable to take anyone down. He’s had shots stuffed before of course but he always finds a way to adapt and get that take down. Jones will be no different.

Everyone likes to hate on wrestling, but I really enjoyed this fight to help answer that very question.
Fighters fight. Snitches Snitch.
My DVR lost rounds 4 and 5, but I knew what happened and don't care of I ever see those rounds, lol.
Anybody think that Davis was rushed WAYYYY too quickly into this fight?
Davis looked scared in the beggining and didn’t get loose through the entire portion I watched. His striking is abysmal and completely telegraphed. His wrestling is great, but not top of the food chain, like we were lead to believe, and he is very inexperienced.
Too much, too soon.

way too much too soon
You knew the fight was doomed after the first few scrambles. Rashad took the GSP route to victory though, which was somewhat disappointing.

Davis was visibly "broke" in rounds 4 and 5
Although Rashad did fight somewhat conservatively I thought it was great to see him go 5 rounds and dominate every round in every facet…something he’s never done.

lets also not forget
that Davis is no slouch either. Shad had his hands full going into this fight and beat a bigger/undefeated fighter.
I don't think so ulf. Evans was just the better fighter.
I mean Davis beat Gustafson & lil nog he was up in the food chain IMO.

Now we can finally see the fight we all want. Hats off to shad.

Not a great event at all...
I just wasn’t excited about the fights as they were happening, didn’t feel like a UFC card to me.
I miss the spike shows I guess…and with all the possible fights they could have put together this just seemed like a weird trio of fights…
Belfort vs Johnson or Carlos vs Diaz were only a couple of weeks apart from this card, don’t know why they just didn’t switch one for one of the 3…
i thought Bisping vs Chael was decent and I thought Bisping won
Unfortunately, the UFC and MMA in general aren’t as good as everyone on this site wants to say there are. Too many lame shows, too many injuries, too much ducking, and too much cutting weight.
I will also say, I think MMA has already hit its peak. Dana wants to be bigger then the NFL, it will never happen.
You've been Dana'd

I agree that the event was mediocre at best...
But I think MMA can eclipse the NFL. Definitely not as far as this country is concerned, but def should be able to pull in better numbers overseas.
I also thought the whole Fox show sucked pretty hard, but that they will go back to the drawing board and rejigger it…and not have their YOUNGEST champion commentating. He just read straight from his card. But still, its a long-term contract and I have no doubts they will nail it eventually.
Also wouldn’t hurt if they had a spectacular fight on Fox in the next few shows.
'It is what it is.' = worst saying ever
the UFC and MMA in general aren’t as good as everyone on this site wants to say there are.
I took this statement several ways, but in the end, I came to the conclusion that it was just about one of the stupidest things I have seen posted here. That is saying something.
Fighters fight. Snitches Snitch.
How so? I get you’re a UFC nut hugger, but tell me why people who aren’t fans should watch? Two massive shows on Fox and both failed. Why did they fail? Because the product isn’t that great and is completely hit and miss

I get you’re a UFC nut hugger,
God, you are even gayer than I thought possible.
Fighters fight. Snitches Snitch.
And just because you are slow…I will clarify for you.
You are on a website titled “MMAMania” and you make the statement “I don’t think MMA is as good as you guys say it is”.
Are you really that fucking dumb?
Fighters fight. Snitches Snitch.
Here’s the thing, everyone is complaining about the UFC and these Fox cards. What were you expecting? Pure fireworks and entertainment? New fans to jump on by the boat load? Not happening, the UFC is too unreliable, and has flooded the market with a new card every ten days on average which is even pushing the average fan away
And honestly, this website should be called UFCMania. Hardly anyone talks about MMA topics or other organizations, just UFC – alllllllll the time.

Good point, also I would like to see the “UFC Blog” changed to “MMA blog” on the front page.

UFC threw phil davis in the fire
He should have been fighting someone like ryan bader give him cage time to develop before swimming with shark.

trial by fire...sometimes you craft a fine weapon, and sometimes they break & are thrown back into a slag heap for later.
Davis had been getting his name tossed into title contention convos. He beat Lil Nog in fairly convincing form & this was a Nog who had competed at high levels. Its was his turn to step up. Davis froze under the big lights which made it look easy, but imo even if he had come out alive Rashad is simply better fighter with a more complete skillset.

B/S
Phil Davis knew what he was getting in to. You don’t step in that cage if you don’t think you can beat the man standing across from you. If you get fed cans you don’t know how high the bar really is.

UFC fanboys are so funny. It's hilarious how 3 (4 Hendo?) non UFC fighters of a year ago are now fighting for the title. No such thing as B-league.
