UFC 141 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Lesnar vs Overeem' in Las Vegas

Ufcmedicalsuspensions_medium

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 141: "Lesnar vs. Overeem," which took place on Fri., Dec. 30, 2011, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With several violent bouts on the card, including Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone kicking the crap out of each other for 15 minutes, there were quite a few fighters who were flagged for follow up visits to their doctors. Cheif among them is Diaz, who must be cleared by an ophthalmologist or he won't be allowed to return until June 28, 2012.

And he's the guy who won.

As for Cerrone, he's out until Feb. 14 due to a cut suffered to his lower lip. "Cowboy" is also under orders to avoid contact until Jan. 30. Considering his plans to go snowboarding, at least that contact won't come in training.

Not that it matters much now, considering he retired immediately after losing, but Brock Lesnar was hit with a long suspension, as he'll need to be cleared by a doctor or he's out until June. 28. That means if he changes his mind, he's going to have to visit his doctor first.

Alistair Overeem, the man who sent Brock into retirement, will ride the pine until Feb. 14 thanks to a small cut Lesnar opened above his eye.

But that's not all.

Here is the complete list of UFC 141 injuries and their medical instructions:

Star-divide

Brock Lesnar: Suspended until 6/28/12 unless cleared by doctor for abdominal injury

Alistair Overeem: Suspended until 2/14/12 for cut on right eye, no contact until 1/30/12

Nate Diaz: Suspended until 6/28/12 unless cleared by ophthalmologist; minimum suspension until 1/30/12 for right eye injury, no contact until 1/21/12

Donald Cerrone: Suspended until 2/14/12 for cut on lower lip, no contact until 1/30/12

Jon Fitch: Suspended until 2/29/12, no contact until 2/14/12

Vladimir Matyushenko: Suspended until 6/28/12 unless cleared by orthopedic doctor for left knee; minimum suspension until 2/14/12, no contact until 1/30/12

Alexander Gustafsson: Suspended until 1/30/12 for right tibia contusion, no contact until 1/21/12

Nam Phan: Suspended until 2/29/12 for cut on right eyebrow, no contact until 2/14/12

Junior Assuncao: Suspended until 1/30/12 for cut on right cheer, no contact until 1/21/12

Dong Hyun Kim: Suspended until 1/30/12 for left foot contusion, no contact until 1/21/12

Manny Gamburyan: Suspended until 6/28/12 unless cleared by orthopedic doctor for right shoulder; minimum suspension until 1/30/12, no contact until 1/21/12

Diego Nunes: Suspended until 2/12/12 for cut above left eye, no contact until 1/30/12

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

What the fuck ever. Dude fought for 12 seconds. I’ll bet he’s good to go right now.

Wait...

You want to see him fight sooner?

by Man_Made_God on Jan 3, 2012 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

Well, not that I want to SEE him fight

But sitting out 10 months and then fighting 12 seconds and having some doctor suspend him for 60 days for arbitrary reasons is stupid.

by unambig on Jan 3, 2012 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah hes fine....

Except for the giant black and blue bruise on his brain…..

Anytime you can KTFO like that

your brain suffers…before you know it you end up like Chuck Liddell…

Fitch takes one punch to the head and gets 60 days.

But Nate Diaz takes 61 punches to the head over 15 minutes and he gets a month. Makes perfect sense to me.

you have got to be kidding me.

the dude was out cold. when you get a concussion you have to sit out and rest.

Nobody knows that

Which is why it’s precautionary. There’s no science behind any of this shit.

it will be interesting to find out what kind of cumulative damage these small shots to the head have.

We’re learning more and more every day about traumatic brain injuries(TBI) and vets returning from Iraq & Afghan are the current test subjects. Unfortunately it could take 30 or more years to get these results back. We know so little now about what happens when you get “rocked” or knocked out.

you're totally misinformed.

but then again, perhaps Fitch believes your “he’s fine i’m sure” comment more so than doctors’.

by Boobz on Jan 3, 2012 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

Doctors don't know shit about how the brain works

Which is why an MMA fighter can have 300 fights and be fine and Sidney Crosby can fall down go boom and sit out for 2 years.

by unambig on Jan 3, 2012 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

i think you're right.

when it comes to “how the brain works”, you know just as much as neurologists.

i believe you. no need to argue further.

my mistake.

So..

Brock didn’t have a broken rib?

He just thought he did

He has a very low pain threshold.

by Motmaitre on Jan 3, 2012 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

right....

i’m sure you can kick his ass since you’ll be able to hurt him so easily.

lol

I was just going to write that.

Where’s that broken rib that the Brocksuckers were clinging to?

I guess you two need to explain the difference between a liver and rib to Brock, he is the one who said he thought he had a borken rib.

He probably wouldn’t know the difference between borken and broken either.

A Liver is not Rib

Masters level biology there.

Brock is no doctor but he felt extreme pain there(not surprising...) and the first thing that came to mind was a Broken Rib.

Or perhaps he was concerned about the area where he had surgery?

I doubt his mind would go to his “liver”. I mean I bet he, like a good number of fans out there, won’t know off the top of their heads where their liver is exactly located.

duh!

Its in the body!

Abdominal injury of unknown variety tells me either lesnar had sustained rib(s) fracture

or the liver kick reopened a healing bowel or liver laceration. Call the injury for what it is and not sugar coated. lesnar got his bowels kicked inside out plain and simple

used to be a contender then he took knee to the liver
