UFC Quick Quote: Dana White thinks Michael Bisping beat Chael Sonnen

Did Michael Bisping (L) get robbed by the ringside judges, who gave Chael Sonnen (R) a split decision victory in the UFC on Fox 2 co main event? Photo be Esther Lin for MMA Fighting.

"I actually, I did score that fight, I had Bisping two rounds to one. I was actually saying before the fight, this isn’t a five to one (under)dog. Bisping wrestled with Rashad, the way Bisping wrestled with Hamil. There is debate as to who won the Hamill fight. He was in there with Hamill. Bisping has great wrestling, good stand up and great submissions, too."

-- Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White tells Ariel Helwani during a UFC on Fuel TV post-fight interview that he feels "The Count" did enough to earn the victory over Chael Sonnen last night (Jan. 28, 2012) in the UFC on Fox 2 co-main event in Chicago, Illinois. The judges, however, saw it differently, scoring the three round middleweight fight a split decision in favor of the trash talker from West Linn, Oregon. Helwani also revealed to White in the interview that Michael Bisping told him (Helwani) that Sonnen told him (Bisping) after the fight that Bisping won the fight. The plot thickens. Regardless, it will soon be an afterthought as the focus begins to shift on the looming rematch between Sonnen and Anderson Silva, which is penciled in to take place in Brazil later this year. In the meantime, any of you Maniacs agree with the UFC head honcho, or did the judges get it right? And what’s your take on Chael’s comments to Bisping telling him he really won the fight if indeed accurate?

And Danass thinks he's infallible

He’s just saying that to suck up to all the UK fans. What offense did Pissbing bring? Other than turning Sonnen around on the fence and then thinking that he was Randy Couture?

both guys didnt look good

Bis hit chael with a number of shots and didnt seem to do any damage whatsoever…and just when we though Chael was gassed, he comes up with his best round

by Newfie3 on Jan 29, 2012 8:45 AM EST reply actions

But how often is Chael finished by non submissions?

Yeah Bisbing didn’t finish him with strikes, but with Sonnen, that’s nothing new.

You mind your own damn business.

yup, Bisping did look great

Chael tired out from Bispings wrestling defence, and being put up against the cage.
There’s a time to shit on Bisping, and a time take your hat off to him.

I thought he won 2 rounds to 1

like i said

you say he tired out, but rd 3 was his most dominate rd…..so you cant say he tired him out, because he wasnt

by Newfie3 on Jan 29, 2012 8:53 AM EST up reply actions

I can say he tired him out...

He managed to get the takedown, and cause little damage… he was visibly tired.
Bisping did more damage in the last 3 seconds with his takedown…

Compare Chael’s 5 rounder with Silva…

by cl4im3r on Jan 29, 2012 9:05 AM EST up reply actions

but Bisping still couldnt get up

tired or not, he was mounted for a couple minutes..

okay, in chael vs andy, chael looked to be tired too, but he still got takedowns and top position, as he did in Rd 3 vs bis when you say he was gassed. If his one was a 5 rder, Chael would have done the same to Bis in rds 4 and 5! even if he was “tired”

by Newfie3 on Jan 29, 2012 9:09 AM EST up reply actions

If you watch that fight not clearly wanting bisping to win you can’t make any argument for the guy. He didn’t do much of anything to be given the win. I’d give him the 2nd round because Chael did nothing, but neither did Bisping. He pushed up against him for majority of that round. The first and 3rd were obviously going to Sonnen. To say either fighter looked great is ridiculous. If you threw Anderson or Belfort against either of these 2 with their poor outings they would have lost.

by bshark10 on Jan 29, 2012 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

No way was the first ‘obviously’ Sonnens.

Sonnen himself said that he was badly hurt in the first. I thought bisping landed the better shots and controlled Sonnen well.

Sonnen controlled both rounds 1 & 3!

Sonnen had mutipul takedowns in the fight and he got the nod-UD not split. I am starting to become a Bisping fan though I think he had a good showing and made it close with constant presure he just didn’t turn the corner and kept alowing Sonnen to get takedowns and Sonnen would hold on to him (Bisping) when Bisping would get into a position to do dammage, Sonnen always nutralized his offense. But keep making excuses for the Brit it won’t matter. I think Bisping will get his due eventually.

by kentmurr410 on Jan 29, 2012 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

well you would be wrong. he didn’t do any type of controlling until after the 2:30 mark in the first round. so for the first half of the round he did nothing. when he did have him pushed up against the fence he didn’t do much work either. who cares if sonnen got caught with one punch and was hurt during the fight. you really think bisping wasn’t hurting in the 2nd when sonnen landed that clean right that stumbled him? people get hurt in fights and recover. that doesn’t mean they won the round. your boy bisping will fight again don’t worry, and he will beat another middle class talent and be given a title shot soon. dana loves the prick.

Expectations ruined people perspective on this fight

Bisping was a 5-1 underdog and sonnen was coming off of a dominant win over stann.People expected sonnen to destroy bisping and the fact is he didn’t.Now you have people making a case for a fighter who lost a unanimous decision, was outstruck according to fight metrics and was taken down 5 times

bisping didnt do anything that we didnt think he would do

he doesnt seem to be getting any better, or developing new skills…he is the same fighter everytime…he did a great job of stuffing takedowns, but he couldnt get any himself..he was stuffed everytime, and you knew eventually Chael would get him down, and he did, and had multiple dominant positions.

You are right but if you cosider that this is the best guy Bisping has ever fought his performance may have been his best.

If Sonnen can manage to repeat his first performance against Silva without getting submitted then they might have to give Bisping another shot and I think a guy like Bisping is getting better.

I think Bisping won. You can say things like "what offense did Bisping do?"

The same could be said about Chael. Other than holding onto Bispings foot when he took him down, his blanket like wrestling and the one significant punch he landed, he didn’t do much.

Bisping hit him more, and out graphled him against the cage. I scored it 29-28 for Bisping, and so did Rogan, Dana, Golberg and everyone else.
Anyone who seen it differently is just trying to look like the MMA guru that see’s things that others don’t. The judges got it wrong, simple.

Chael won the fight. Check the fight metric, Chael landed more total strikes and even landed more significant strikes than bisping. He took Bisping down four times and Bisping only once. If you watch the first round, all Bisping was doing was pushing Chael against the fence, and Chael was landing more strikes even in that position. Bisping did better than expected but I thought Chael did enough to win the fight.

Ok so Sonnen got the decision, but let’s face it he is the most boring fighter to ever get a title shot….. Yes his interviews and trash talk are entertaining and yes his fighting style, close the distance quickly and shoot fotr the TD is pretty effective, unfortunately it doesn’t make for the most exciting fights.

Bisping did a very good job against him and i’m glad Chael recognised this in his post fight interviews.

are you for real?

you think there was a better chance of bisping winning the 3rd than of sonnen winning the 2nd? wow…….people…….sonnen won the 1st and 3rd rounds clear as day. only your bias can blind you from something so obvious. A 30-27 for sonnen is no crazier than a 29-28 for bisping.

No it's a lot crazier

The first was a close round too.
No chance Sonnen won the 2nd but I could see how u Could give bisping the 1st
30 27 is a lot crazier then 29-28 in the case……that’s assuming you actually watched the fight….by your commenting I’d guess you didn’t

chael won round 1 more clearly

than bisping won round 2, although it’s close and they’re both clear. saying sonnen won both those rounds is no crazier than saying bisping won them both. I watched twice and broke down the numbers. what was your scoring? if it didn’t go: round 1 chael 10-9, round 2 bisping 10-9, and round 3 chael 10-9, i’ll gladly disprove your scorecard.

That's exactly how I scored it as well, I've watched it twice too

I guess I just thought round 1 was closer then round 2
No doubt sonnen won. Just a lot closer then one judge made it seem

Stats show round 2 was closer, but not by much

and even if a judge scored it 30-27, that doesn’t mean the fight wasn’t close. besides, that 30-27 score was for bisping. they made a mistake reading it.

Not sure you can disprove but I agree with you/

I had rd. one Chael 2 Bisping both close and either anyway. I agree with you non the less

Shades of Filho

Bisping lost the 3rd hands down – 10-9 Sonnen
Even if we say Sonnen won the first by… um… lets just say he did… I cannot see how Sonnen won the 2nd. You can be angry and huff and puff all you want but I just dont see how it was 30-27.
About my bias… yeah, I dont like Sonnen, but I dont see Bisping being a threat to Silva anywhere in a fight. I much rather see Sonnen vs Silva again, but if you tell me that after this horrible lethargic performance he has any kind of a chance, youre dreaming.

Is it me or was Chael reminiscent of Filho in his last fight? Yeah, he wasn’t talking to himself, but he was odd from start to finish… I see how its a marketing thing for him, but he seemed to be out of it.

1st off,

I’m not claiming Sonnen won the 2nd. I’m saying if you think Bisping won the 1st, that’s just as ridiculous as saying Sonnen won the second.

Also, it’s come out that the score of 30-27 was actually in bisping’s favor. that judge is even worse than you though. instead of fucking up 1 round, he fucked up 2 of them.

Bisping did (barely) enough to win the fight.

He got back up on all but 1 (the last one) takedown. He was the more effective striker, so I gave him rounds 1 and 2. It was very close, no doubt, as both men were sloppy. Bisping split.

Close close fight

I would have liked to see a split one way or the other
What boggles my mind Is one judge scored it 30 27 Sonnen
