This has not been a good week for the UFC. After the infamous clashes with Anonymous completely overshadowed the hype for the first full card televised on FOX Zuffa really needed tonight's event to be a success. It wasn't. All 3 fights were underwhelming decisions and the only man who was truly elevated by his performance tonight was Michael Bisping and he lost, but we'll get to that shambles later. This was not the card that the UFC needed to reach a new mainstream audience through FOX and although it has set up 2 huge main events for future PPVs in the Jon Jones vs Rashad Evans grudge match and Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen rematch but neither Rashad or Chael in all honestly put on the performance required to build up anticipation for these title fights. And no stealing a Superstar Billy Graham promo after a lackluster display isn't creating hype.
Rashad did what he needed to do against the previously undefeated Phil Davis and did exactly what I had been expecting ever since this fight was first proposed. He used his superior speed to constantly beat Davis to the punch in the striking exchanges, had the more diverse wrestling attack to consistently get the fight to the ground and from there controlled the action and advanced to dominant positions including the mounted crucifix throughout the fight. I always expected this fight to be too much too soon for Phil but this will be a good experience for him in terms of what it takes to be a top fighter in and out of the cage. It's how he reacts to this loss that will determine how good he will become. As for Rashad even he admitted that his focus was on Bones Jones and not Davis. Rashad coasting to a decision win over an overmatched prospect and Jon's nervy display as an announcer wasn't exactly the best way to promote the fight but it's a match-up that is long overdue and sells itself.
In a fight that was seen by many to be the real main-event of the show top Middleweight contenders Michael Bisping and Chael Sonnen battled to earn the next shot at Anderson Silva's title. Both of these guys were set to fight different opponents until Mark Munoz pulled out of the card and the matches were rearranged. Sonnen was coming into this fight on the back of a dominant submission win over Brian Stann and was the heavy favourite for this fight, with most expecting him to take Bisping down and control him on the mat, beating him up with ground and pound. After successfully landing a takedown in the opening exchange it seemed to be the perfect start but surprisingly Bisping was able to get back to his feet in seconds. On the feet Bisping landed more strikes and was even able to bully Chael around in the clinch, pushing him against the fence and doing damage. Chael was able to take Bisping down a further 2 times in the opening 2 rounds but wasn't able to control him or do any offense on top. The first round was close but the second was clearly won by Bisping. The third round was a different story though as Chael landed an early takedown and from there was finally able to advance position and attack with strikes and submission attempts. It was a dominant round but in my opinion not enough to win the fight, so when the decision was announced I was not only shocked to hear that Sonnen won but appalled at the score of 30-27. Since Sonnen winning was the outcome that Zuffa wanted it makes you question how legitimate and fair the scoring was. As for the scripted post-fight promo that once again ripped off WWE Hall of Famer Superstar Billy Graham, the less said about it the better.
The opening fight of the night pitted decorated wrestler Chris Weidman against former ADCC champion Demian Maia in a fight that Weidman accepted on 11 days notice. This was not a good advertisement for MMA or the UFC brand as both fighters quickly gassed and as so often happens when elite grapplers face each other the fight devolved into sloppy kickboxing. I'm a fan of Weidman and have very high hopes for him but this wasn't a particularly convincing performance and quite clearly his cardio was not at the level that it would have been had he had more time to prepare. That being said he still did enough to win a unanimous (wrongly announced as a split) decision against a far more experienced opponent on short notice. As for Maia my opinion that his BJJ skill has regressed since he began focusing more in training on his striking appears validated, he only used his BJJ to get back to his feet instead of attacking with submissions and seemed content to lose striking exchanges for 3 rounds instead of utilising his grappling skills.
Great news for everybody in the pool though, we have 39 players which is enough for event winners to be paid out $20 again. So there can be no excuses for quitting mid-season. As for the standings TBranson continues to dominate despite scoring his lowest total so far this season after a spectacular collapse from his nearest rival BNF. That allowed the dark lord himself DetroitDrew1980 to move into second place thanks to another strong showing. Clearly the Darkside's plan is working, with Darth Drew's apprentice Jido7 also placing in the top 5. As for Drew's bitter rival Stinky Picks, she continues to fall further down the rankings. Maybe next time you should spend less time talking about the size of Drew's lightsaber and more time researching fights so that you can actually become competitive again. And to avoid exposing your inability to count again you're in joint 16th with deuce, which means that you're behind 15 people.
Event Winner
His picking skill may have deteriorated since playing for free last season with BE but tonight Chocolate Silk himself finally came good and earns himself $20. This was a low scoring event for everybody and Ulf's event winning total of 74 is actually the lowest of the season but I'm sure that the Maniac formerly known as Eoghan won't care. He correctly picked 9/10 fights, only missing out on Michael Johnson and earning full points on Lavar Johnson, Chris Weidman and Chael Sonnen. He also gained 14 points from the hot bout after correctly picking Cub Swanson by 2nd round finish.
Honourary mentions go to the joint runners-up ViolentMike and Scottidog who both scored 73. Mike actually picked more fights perfectly than Ulf, which were Charles Oliveira, Mike Russow, Weidman and Sonnen as well as getting 14 points for the hot bout but incorrectly picking OJR Joey Beltran and Shane Roller proved to be his undoing. Picking those 2 also cost everybody's favourite Canadian pensioner Scottidog from winning an event for the first time. Like Mike he picked up 14 points on the hot bout and perfectly picked 4 fights (Oliveira, Weidman, Sonnen and Rashad Evans) but that wasn't quite enough to displace the slightly younger Murphy. Whilst you may not have won any money yet console yourselves with the fact that you're both strong contenders to finish in a money spot, especially Chris Martin Mike who now moves up to third place.
Biggest Loser
In what was an already low-scoring event for the league TuffGong set the standard for poor picking skills, as he was only able to correctly pick 4 winners in Chris Camozzi, Oliveira, Evan Dunham and Evans earning him just 20 points, a sig of shame from Ulf (if anyone still does that) and a new record for the worst score of the season. After picking Michael Bisping by unanimous decision Tuff must have been the only person more annoyed than Mick by that verdict.
Honourary mention goes to BNF who fell from 2nd place overall to 11th after only being able to score a lowly 31. He picked 5/10 fights correctly but other than the perfect pick of Sonnen by unanimous decision he only correctly guessed the winner (Oliveira, Dunham, Weidman and Evans). The suspect scoring in the co-main event saved him from a last placed finish and a score of 20. The Pride also scored the same amount and was another one saved from further embarrassment by the judges.

As a rookie, you have a built in excuse.
You already are developing the consistency to do really well. The key is to know that you will have a bad event, but minimize the damage that bad event does to your season. Hell, NNR scored a 27 and still came in 2nd the first season I was in.

Got lucky with Weidman, Sonnen, Evans lol. I had another Sonnen / Evans but it was the Sonnen fight that nearly murked me. I think the site i’m on waited until the day of the event to post all the other fights up … so I learnt my lesson to wait.
Not sure about Condit / Diaz card, not much jumping out at me. Need another look but Ed Herman, Barao, Diaz in some sort of combo might be ok … Nelson / Werdum odds are closest but I haven’t decided what to do with that yet, would rather not bet on either.

im not sure, i experimented with the 2way and 3way round robin parlays
5dimes is user unfriendly, but laid the best odds so I used them, so I have to calculate all bets done this way something like 70 bets… and as far as I can tell i lost my ass in the 2way parlays but did good on my 3way parlays only losing 1 out of 5, but there were 3 heavy favorites in it. plus I hedge a 3 way parlay with johnson for $40 and made $120 so I guess I came out about $120 ahead

5 dimes gave me a 18page spreadsheet… so Im trying to sort out exactly how much I lost in my $25 parlays and $7 parlays which are mixed together in the spread sheet because its in order of time of fights ending and payouts… 5dimes is not user friendly… but they offered the best odds.
next time Im just going to stick with my top 6-picks or so … also I’ll be going back to my usual routine of picking my own parlays as well. this round robin thing may workout well but Im not exactly sure how Ill be using it yet.

He said he’s not comfortable sending money now that he’s lost the first payment he sent. He wants to just try to win an event and use the money he wins for the payment into this season.
GottaHemmi is ejected for not paying after we did this last season with him. He’s not reliable for payments at all. This would be his third chance I believe to try to show he’s not a problem and it still hasn’t worked out. Plus I’ve gotten no messages from him asking for more time or enquiring about his payment. My guess is he didn’t send it and was hoping to win an event like the other guy who hasn’t paid.

and got 2nd in two events.
In season one, I had a couple events where I didn’t get all my picks in, it was a lousy performance, but I didn’t “give up.”

In order to maintain transparency, I’ll come clean and say that I’m the dude who had trouble getting money to Canada. a) Didn’t realize the new money-transfer service Jay set up was not available to folks in the states until time was running out b) I got busy at work c) I didn’t realize fedex cared about sending money d) they took my money from me and now I’m out 40 bucks.
I suggested to Jay that he could either kick me out or if I won an event (or I won the whole thing) I can take a penalty—but I figure now that’s unfair. Obviously it’s clear I enjoy picking fights and I enjoy the rivalry and stuff but I’m not tryin to pull a fast one on anyone. So I can just quit now and rejoin next season. No big deal.

I think you can legally Fedex cash
But not with Fedex Canada. And they mailed me back my original envelope with nothing in it. Nowhere is it illegal to send cash—as far as my research goes, just policies by companies or whatever. The reason why I’d rather just drop out and wait till next season is because if I snail-mailed you another 20 bucks, that would be like 60 bucks to try to play this money pool (20 that got confiscated, 20 it cost to ship it expedited, and the other 20 by snail mail). I’m not terribly upset about getting kicked out, I get it. Just wanna be able to play again in the future. I wouldn’t have waited till the last minute if I knew that the new payment thing Jay set up wasn’t available to Americans.

I agree about the birthday card.
But I used fedex because I just wanted to get it to Jay faster than snail mail. So I thought I’d bite the bullet and pay fedex extra to send it so it could get there by the deadline, then it got tied up, had paperwork issues (still can’t figure that out) and then it got rejected.
So in the future, I think the policy is that everyone in the states or whatever should send Jay a birthday card from grandpa way way in advance.

They said the paperwork was fucked up, so I went in to fedex on 2 separate occasions, then i even called fedex and faxed over some different paperwork at some point, then it got all tied up in Ohio at the border, then they called me and said it got returned, then they sent me an empty envelope LOL. Huge clusterfuck. Not saying you should make a special case for me. Just saying I really did try to get my shit together as soon as I got back into the US from spain. Listen, I will just forfeit this season, and try something different next season. But in the future, in order for Americans to play, we’ll need to figure a safe, legal way to exchange money. If anything, I enjoy reading and posting on this forum, so even if I dont’ get to play anymore, i don’t want my reputation on here damaged. NNR made a 27 point swing on one event the first big season (season 4?) and went from like 16th to 4th, and continued to climb upwards from there with solid showing (top 5 3 in a row, I think) to get into first before Agar knowcked him off with one or two events remaining.
Anyone within 100 points, could still win, even though those odds are very low, but realistically, anyone within 66 points (1 perfect pick better than you per event) has a really good shot of catching you. That would make the cut off 197. 23rd place. NNR.
