UFC rankings/MMA rankings featured in USA Today for January 2012
Why are MMA fans so cranky? Yep, it's that time of the month again.
Rankings!
Our partners in crime over at BloodyElbow.com have once again published their divisional rankings for mixed martial arts in the nation’s largest daily newspaper, USA Today, for the month of January 2012.
For those of you unfamiliar with the process, here’s how it works:
"The rankings, which will offer a definitive perspective of top MMA fighters across all weight-classes, will be released monthly and published in the Sports section of USA TODAY, online at USATODAY.com and on SB Nation’s MMA commentary and community blog, BloodyElbow.com … The USA TODAY/MMA Nation Consensus MMA Rankings are compiled each month by Nate Wilcox and Richard Wade of BloodyElbow.com. The rankings utilize each of the top MMA rankings from multiple unique sources. A weighted-formula is applied to normalize and distill the various rankings into one consensus ranking per weight class."

Wtf?
How does Mir keep getting tossed in the top 5? o.o
And Elleneberger higher than Condit? Thats…interesting.
Show no mercy; for you shall receive none
I was gonna say the same about Condit, he beat Ellenberger
Probably cuz he KO’d Jake Shields, who was up there
Fresh meat for GSP
He hasn’t faced any of the remaining top 5

Mir deserves it.
He has 3 wins in a row and just sub’d nog. Who else in the hw division that’s behind mir in the rankings have 3 pretty big wins in a row. His only losses in the last 3 years were to carwin and brock in title fights.

Agreed.
I don’t get the rationale of why people think he doesn’t deserve to be up there and I am not a Mir fan. Who deserves to be above him? Yeah Carwin beat him quite handidly but that was a while ago and a long layoff for Carwin and wins for Mir.

But take a look back at those wins, he KOed the skeletal remains of Mirko in an absolute snoozer and quite possibly the worst main event of 2011, then he gave a disheartening but decisive performance against a supposedly ill fatty nelson, then went all rubber legs on zombi Nog and would have been finished had Nog not idiotically gone for the sub. the biggest mental fart in ages.
In his losses he was completely blown out of the water as well and was brutally stopped in both occasions. Sorry but that is not top 5 fighter in the world material.
Show no mercy; for you shall receive none
You have to remember though.
It isn’t just based on what you have done, but what others in the division have done. I don’t think there is really much of an argument for anyone to be above him in that weight class ya know?

Rua is ahead of Hendo
Based on what Rua has accomplished. Hendo isn’t a champion
I'm not a racist. I hate all people equally.
HAHAHAHA
ranking a guy who just lost in a head to head higher?

I know I am late coming with this...
But seriously – NOT a Champion? I guess two belts in Pride, one in Strikeforce and multiple wins against former and/or future champs doesn’t count, huh? Are you suggesting that Rashad IS a champion?
Can someone please tell the world
That Forrest Griffen is not a top 10 contender in his weight class. Unless you are weighing this on one’s ability to be a punching bag or KO’ed by a jab. Douche alert!
Beating #4, #5, and being an ex-champ usually gets you in the top 10.

the lhw rankings are so messed up.
and how is cheick kongo not in the top 10. he should be way ahead of nog, carwin and dudes that don’t even fight and have recent losses.
forrest griffin is a celeb fighter probably not a top 30-40 lhw, shogun is a fan favorite but he should be at best at the deep end of top 10.

LHW division is overrated.
A flat footed 1 dimensional boxer is still in the top 5 and has been in the top 5 for years now.

problem is, most ppl in the mma community seems to be retarded.
I don’t give a fuck about anybody’s opinion when it comes to rankings or fighters. it should be 100% based on win/loss records, recent fights, significance such as title fights should be a minor factor. but truth is if you look at any sport or any competition that consistency wins, it’s a joke when a dude with a 4-4 record in his last 8 fights or even a negative record could be that high. Also why this means nothing when ppl rank fighters on their opinion, is cause the person that gets the most tv time and is memorable is always going to get the most support which is pathetic in a sport.

Hendricks hits hard
one shot knocked Fitch from #2 to #7…. Fitch is lucky it got stopped, imagine if Hendricks got a few more hard shots in on the ground? Fitch would be fighting Paul Daley in Bamma.
Fitch has 2 losses in his last 24 fights… sucks to be unpopular.
AKA not getting much love, KOS behind Ellenberger, Condit and Hendricks is hilarious. Kos has been fighting nothing but studs for years, and has whooped most of their asses. Those aforementioned guys haven’t come anywhere near the level of competition that Kos faces.
Michael Chandler… bwahahaha… come on? Really? There’s 15 guys in the UFC that would eat his lunch and hang him by his underwear on a coat hook. GTFO..

no fedor in the top 10?
ha, journalism schjournalism!
pride never die.
He lost 3 in a row to the #5 and #10 hw and a lhw. That takes you too far out of the top ten to get back with a super boring and conservative win over an older jeff munson.

Condit not number 3 what the fuck

BJ Penn at #9??
He has one win at 170 since 2004.
I guess the voters need to justify giving Nick #2 since BJ is his best win…

How is Barnett not ranked higher.
Fan of: Cole Miller, Amir Sadollah, Alan Belcher, Frank Mir, Matt Brown
Level of competition
since he is Zuffa blacklisted and he pissed so hot he burned down affliction, he hasn’t fought any ranked fighters. Hasn’t faced anyone on that list and most of the guys he has fought lately are ranked in the teens or worse.
He may be better than some of those guys, but they have at least fought against current top ranked fighters. Dana ain’t gonna let him back in for a shot at a 4th failed PED test either.

Forrest Griffin still Top 10?
He beat Rampage like 4-5 years ago no? He beat Shogun 5 1/2 years ago and got KOed in the rematch an he barley fights. No reason for him being in the Top 10.
