UFC on FOX 3: John Dodson vs Darren Uyenoyama booked for May 5 in New Jersey

John Dodson (left) will take on Darren Uyenoyama at UFC on FOX 3 on May 5 in New Jersey.

John Dodson is heading back to New Jersey.

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 14 winner, who made a trip to the "Garden State" last year to tryout for the former Spike TV reality show, is now booked to throw hands against Darren Uyenoyama at UFC on FOX 3 on May 5, 2012, from the IZOD Center in East Rutherford.

And he'll do it in his natural weight class of 125-pounds.

Dodson (12-5) graduated at the top of his TUF class, laying waste to Brandon Merkt, "Prince" Albert and Johnny Bedford. That set up a showdown against T.J. Dillashaw in last December's live finale, which he won in devastating fashion.

Can "The Magician" show off some new tricks as a flyweight?

Star-divide

Standing in his was will be Uyenoyama (7-3), also the beneficiary of the promotion's new weight class.

"BC" has been playing pinball with his career, bouncing off promotions such as Cage Combat Fighting Championships (CCCFC), Deep, Shooto, Strikeforce and now the UFC. His first appearance inside the Octagon resulted in a unanimous decision win over Norifumi Yamamoto.

Who establishes themselves as the next big thing at 125-pounds?

UFC on FOX 3 will be headlined by a lightweight fight featuring Jim Miller vs. Nate Diaz. The victor is widely-expected to move on to face the winner of Frankie Edgar vs. Ben Henderson, who compete next month at UFC 144 in Japan.

Stay tuned for future announcements to this still-developing fight card.

Lots of ways to look at it.

1. It is a reality show.

2. He went there with his real teammate, Diego and said from the start he would do whatever he could to make sure they both made it to the finals. If it were me and I was on that show, my allegiance would remain with my true teammates, as opposed to the ones who I was randomly paired up with for a reality show (not to mention it is a competition, they aren’t giving out contracts for everyone on your team).

3. It is a reality show. Did I say that already? I highly doubt Dodson is anything like he was made out to be on that show.

You really think so? Here is some info you may not know. I grew up watching the smaller guys (wrestling). My brother was an all-state dwarf wrestler and I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the littler guys (seeing how I grew up getting my ass kicked by them). Not to mention enjoying the smaller JMMA guys, going to Rage in the Cage events in AZ and seeing the smaller guys there.

I don’t know why I even bother trying to justify who I like to you. You have obviously made your mind up. You don’t like me. Fine. Not everyone does. Don’t let it ruin your day.

With the drop Joe B and Mighty Mouse will be the premier names. Those two guys you should recognize as title challengers to Dominick Cruz. The other two top guys vying for the title in that tourney are Ian McCall who was a WEC bantamweight and then became the Tahachi Palace Flyweight Champion beating the top ranked Flyweight in the world. Yasuhiro Urushitani is a veteran of JMMA for the flyweights. He already beat TUF champ Dodson earlier in their careers and remained a successful mainstay overseas. Other guys you should know will be of course the TUF champ Dodson and his opponent Uyenoyama. But also Jussier Da Silva who may be signed, he was the long time reigning top ranked 125er. Mamaru Yamaguchi who was a the KOTC champ and long time JMMA mainstay as well.

That should be a good start. And you will see more “small” bantamweights in the UFC making the cut down.

I do

I think McCall is vastly underated and has all-around skills better than anyone in the tourney. I do feel that his size, or lack thereof, may be a problem against DJ when taken down, but he is a better striker than DJ. I only fear he gets smothered through top position control, like Torres did.

Edgar is far superior to the rest of 155
same goes for Aldo at 145, Cruz at 135, Jones at 205, Dos Santos at HW, and a healthy GSP until Ellenberger is ready for his shot.

I view it as the opposite

I still don’t consider Brock to have a weak chin, I’ve never seen the gut KO’d. he certainly doesn’t like to get hit for sure.
How about Nick Diaz? He gets dropped in almost every fight, and people always tout him as having an iron chin.

how about nick diaz and frankie edgar

they both get dropped a bunch

I went 0-2 against Phasebook. Why do I feel that I am just padding his record?" Next time I won’t pick a guy whose best weapon is a somersault against a real bad guy like Scarface.

to be honest

i dont think frankie has a great chin either, the 3rd fight with gray solidified that for me when the first round went almost exactly the same…but hes got a ton of heart, as i believe cain does as well…nick diaz im not gonna lie, i dont really remember him getting dropped that much, the only one that comes to mind off the top of my head is paul daley, which is understandable because that dude hits like thunder

if memory serves me correctly

Diaz was dropped by Daley, Santos, Noons. Can’t remember if Penn knocked him down, i know that fight did go to the ground in the 1st, but I can’t remember how it got there

i think theres a huge difference between chin and heart

cain has a huge heart but not a great chin, brock is exactly the opposite – real solid chin, no heart

If you use strength, you tire

I agree with you about the heart,

but we have a fundamental disagreement on what constitutes a weak/suspect chin

Kongo knocked Pat Barry out cold

does he have a suspect chin now? Kongo hits hard, Cain took his shots and kept on going. That to me is resilience not weakness.

no because he got droped 3 times by kongo … and if you looked into his eyes after dos santos hit him he looked like a deer that had just been shot .

and if you looked into his eyes after dos santos hit him he looked like a deer that had just been shot .

he had just lost his title in a fight that lasted just over a minute. And him getting dropped by Kongo, another hard hitter, I thought showed his recovery skills more than it showed a suspect chin.

if you go back and watch it in slow mo . you can read his lips as he says "thank you " to the ref … dude was over matched and knew it … look cain is great .. im not saying he isnt .. im just saying you dont want to throw him in there with a striker and run the risk of him getting kod and thus him losing some of his networth.. similar to how i felt was gonna hapeen with brock and overeem . i mean its was a big ppv and a big pay day .. but brock was gonna get bet and he was gonna loose some of his luster .. and thats what happened.

by Nightmare83 on Jan 25, 2012 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

I hear what your saying

But I think your reading into the last fight to much. Cain got caught, and he got caught in a bad spot against a guy with finishing instincts. If pitted against Mir, Nelson, Kongo, or Carwin as you stated above, I think Cain rolls. I still have Cain as a top 3 HW

I have him as a Top 5 at the worst - right now. Lets see how bad his shoulder injury really was and his recuperation. JDS fight obviously did not give us enough to go on.

im not saying cain sucks .. im just saying dude doesnt take hits well ..i mean you see how dos santos took what nelson threw at him and vice vera and then you see how he took carwins shots … the problem with alot of these guys who are “big” is they have never been hit in their lives before i mean come one .. most of us guys between 5 foot 8 to 5 foot 11 arent gonna go and f with guys 6 foot 2 and bigger .. these guys dont get tested … and so when they get hit its like waht the f was that

That’s just me, though. If you guys want to see a bunch of midgets and ethiopians on the UFC main cards, all the power to you.

Unlike a few of you guys, I don’t pretend 125 is exciting because I’ve talked to a guy online.

Why are they fake teammates? They were training together, learning together, living together…What’s fake? Because it’s on TV?
