Gina Carano's Haywire movie makes estimated $9 million in first weekend in theaters

How popular is mixed martial arts star Gina Carano?
Well, her big movie debut, Haywire, took in an estimated $9 million at the box office in its first weekend in theaters, good enough for fifth place, according to Box Office Mojo.
For those interested, Underworld Awakening, starring Kate Beckinsale, took number one with an estimated gross of $25.4 million.
Reviews of Haywire have been mostly positive. Roger Ebert, most notably, was especially complimentary of Carano, going so far as to say he expects her to be a "considerable box office success." From his site (read his full review here):
Her range is suggested by having placed No. 5 on a Most Influential Women list on Yahoo! and No. 16 on Maxim's Hot 100. On the basis of "Haywire," I expect her to become a considerable box-office success, because the fact is, within a limited range, she's good. In the movie's first scene, she walks into a little cafe in upstate New York, sits down, sips a little tea and had me hooked. She has the no-nonsense beauty of a Noomi Rapace, Linda Fiorentino or Michelle Monaghan.
Ebert goes on to say that Haywire "has no lasting significance, but it's a pleasure to see an A-list director taking the care to make a first-rate genre thriller."

Saw the movie this saturday, not bad but could have been better though (at least the fight scenes were realistic lol)

I did not care for this movie at all! I thought it was garbage from a movie go-ers point of view.
From an mma fan’s point of view, I did enjoy her fighting scenes. I think she can do more movies as well, because she did do a pretty good job. It wasn’t the acting that was terrible, just the movie. Lots of running/chasing/hiding scenes with no dialogue or sound at times. Other than the weird 50’s chase music. If you want to see this movie because you want to see an action-packed movie dont bother. If you want to go because you are in love with Gina and mma then check it out because only her fighting scenes could justify the price of admission.
It was horrible!

Ill probably catch it on redbox it looks too cliche…I’d rather watch Contraband or Underworld…that’s probably why it did so poor it went up against some good movies an its gonna get worse next week with The Grey (which looks badass; Neeson is just pure badass)

I think it's now official - Gina Carano is done with MMA.
Now that her movie did well, I can’t see her coming back to the fight world. Kind of a shame, but can’t say I blame her.

Considering the budget was $23 million, I’d say $9 mill opening weekend is a little bit less than they had projected. Will likely only make about $26-30 million total, domestically. Add another $25 mill foreign and looking bit over $51 million worldwide.
Movies typically have to make more than double their budgets to make a profit… so this one will break even at best methinks.
They tried to make up for Gina being unknown by surrounding her with big names
If Scarlett Johannson or Natalie portman was in the lead it would have done waaaaay better

I love movies and I only ever walked out on three of them
in my life. This was one of them. I am not sure how anyone can come to the conclusion that this a good movie. However, I am starting to think there is so much garbage out there these days that this is probably less crappy than the others. What surprised the most was that there were some legit actors in this. How in the world did they not see this script as being an epic failure? Lets forget about the worst part of the move for a second which is Gina. The script, the dialogue, the editing was flat out awful. Now don’t get me wrong, Gina is a lot of things. She is beautiful, sexy and she can whoop some ass. I get the appeal. However, she is also dumb as a rock, (listen to her interviews during the premiere and promotional tour) and there are porn stars that have more depth than her in the acting dept. Now I know this is her first movie and all but she is not an actress, period. To put it another way, she is so bad, she made channing tatum look like Robert Duvall. I get that everyone likes to see a girl kick ass but honestly, the fight scenes were nothing that any other well trained actress could not have done with some good choreography. If people were saying the move was ok for what it is given the circumstances, I would not be writing this review. Whats shocking is that there are some people who actually think the move was good and Ginas performance was good!?? I think guys just like to see a hot chick whoop some ass. If thats your thing, at least throw some real acting chops and a powerful script in the mix to make the experience more enjoyable. Thats my opinion anyways. In case you are wondering what the others were, here they are. The Big Hit, Batman & Robin and now Haywire. If Haywire were about a female cyborg or terminator with a three word vocabulary, (think “Ill be back”) Ginas performance would have been justified….
