What Happened to GSP? Georges' UFC career at a Glance
He's taken the sport by storm for the last 7 years, but many fans feel that Georges St. Pierre transformed from an exciting fan favorite to a fighter that is often called "boring" and "safe". We've all heard the jokes: George "Safe" Pierre and Greatest Sleeping Pill, which are the farthest thing in the world from his moniker of "Rush". As a previous fan, I was wanted to better understand this transformation.
When and how exactly did this happen? Popular opinion says that he became tentative after getting devastated by Matt Serra and hasn't been the same since. I charted out his progression as a fighter in the UFC and chronicled the good, the bad and the ugly.
I believe that GSP's UFC career can be broken into 4 eras. The "New Prospect" era when he first joined. The "Vintage GSP" era, when he really hit his stride as a fighter and made a name for himself. After his loss to Matt Serra was the "Strategy" era, which transitioned into its ugly cousin: the "25 Minute Fights" era.
Below is GSP's popularity over milestones in his career. Click the chart to view full size:
My own analysis after the jump.
New Prospect Era begins with a bang
Georges St. Pierre joins the UFC and convincingly defeats the Judo master: Karo Parisyan by decision. Next is the one round destruction of Jay Hieron which earns him a title shot against the seemingly unbeatable Matt Hughes. But, GSP is starstruck by the legendary Huges and loses his first title shot by armbar. The New Prospect era has ended, but the good stuff is still to come!
Vintage GSP Era has arrived
After losing his first title shot, Georges St. Pierre comes back with a vengence and beats Jason Mayhem Miller out of the UFC, completely embarrasses Frank Trigg, and reminds Sean Sherk why midgets don't belong in the Welterweight division. An extremely competitive fight with BJ. Penn takes away some of the luster, but it's quickly regained when GSP blasted Matt Hughes with a headkick and finishes the fight in exciting fashion. During this Vintage GSP era, you would be hard pressed to find a GSP detractor. But all good things must come to an end. Matt Serra shocks the world when he puts GSP on rubber legs with an overhand right. GSP survives the initial barrage, but Serra pounces on him and he can ever be seen tapping from strikes.
Call Greg Jackson, the Strategy Era is here
It's always interesting to see a fighter return from a major loss, but GSP's first fight back was rather unexciting. He proved that he could outwrestle Josh Koshcheck, but failed to impress the audience for 3 rounds with such limited damage. Despite his new strategy for taking down his opponents, his popularity began rising as he submitted Matt Hughes and set the record straight with Matt Serra. Despite the wins, it's becoming increasingly obvious that he's relying on wrestling to neutralize fighters with any real striking ability. At this point, he's mostly still keeping it interesting, but not for long.
No Undercard fights being shown tonight! the 25 Minute Fights era is here
George St. Pierre is champ again and it something must have snapped in his head. He has decided that he will not lose the belt again under any terms. Unfortunately for us, the terms are that he is done being an exciting fighter. He will continue to become increasingly dominant, but no longer a good time. The "25 Minute Fights" era is what I consider his string of title defenses that started with Fitch, all the way through Alves, Hardy and recently Shields. The only exciting stop this train made, was a quick stop along the way to get involved in a scandal called "GreaseGate". I personally think the Hardy fight is when a large number of GSP fans were starting to exit the bus (myself included). Since then, it's just gotten worse. Arguably his two more boring fights have been Koshcheck 2 and Jake "Steaknives" Shields.
It's been a long journey with some ups and downs along the way. Will there be a 5th GSP era or will he retire on a down-note among fans.
I've come to a couple conclusions after charting this information.
Conclusion 1: GSP did not become boring after losing to Matt Serra. Rather he became boring after he won the belt back from Matt Serra, as shown by his entrance to the "25 Minute Fights" era
Conclusion 2: It's not GSP's style that is boring and he doesn't lay and pray; it's his inability to finish fights. In my opinion, all his fights have been the same style since the Matt Serra loss. The fights where he gets the finish are still fun to watch. Once he became champion again, the 5 round fights just compounded the problem.
What do you think maniacs? Did I recognize and label the GSP era's appropriately? Are my conclusions off-base?

I don't really agree with your overall view
But you aren’t alone in thinking of GSP as boring.
If I can offer a little advice….since you put some thought and work into your fan post, try posting it on a weekday…..by noon or so. This was posted onan event night and a Friday evening. I just hate to to see your hard work get overlooked.
Nice write up.
Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

Thanks.
I’m curious, what part do you disagree with?
Thanks for the advice. I didn’t give it too much thought.

I haven't been as bored by him, post Serra loss
He was accused of lay n’ pray and then broke Kos’ face and stood up with Shields with one eye.
He is a strategist. Dominance can often be humdrum after a while.
Just my humble opinion :)

yup
i’ve enjoyed the one sided shitkickings he’s laid on folks these days. he hasn’t been finishing fights but i’d assume some of the guys he’s fought wish he would as much as the fans do, koscheck especially, he was not a happy man for 3,4 and 5.

I think it was one of the first jabs that busted his orbital
I’m not a Kos fan but gained a lot of respect for him hanging in there through 5

You are right about dominance getting old,
But I see other dominant fighters (Aldo, Anderson, bones jones) that are still fun to watch. I think it’s the predicability of GSP these days that is causing all the hate.

don't forget
It wasn’t that long ago that Silva was pissing off fans. The Maia fight being an example

GSP won’t be back in the good books unless he gets 5 straight TKOs.
It’s the in thing to call him safe and boring.

Here's whats happened to GSP
He’s dominated everyone he’s faced. End of story.
Upcoming sig bet with OilCan - Diaz/Condit
Note to self - don't bet against Diaz but I just can't help doing it....again
Yup, pretty much.
Though a stoppage would be nice.
It’s a shame that his next opponent, whether it be Diaz or Condit, will be damn near impossible to finish.
Unless or course the Interim Title is being held by someone else at that point, but in that case the two most likely candidates are Ellenberger and Fitch, who are also tough as nails as hard to stop.

I don’t know . . . Andy and Bones dominate their opponents too. There is just something especially boring about watching 25 minutes of jab, superman punch, spinning back kick.
Fan of: Cole Miller, Amir Sadollah, Alan Belcher, Frank Mir, Matt Brown
Or something beautiful about seeing a fighter incorporate all aspects of MMA into one fluid transition. From jab, to double leg to guard pass.
nothing pretty about it to me
Just one massive 25 minute let down

That doesn’t explain what has happened to GSP, we know he’s dominant.
Bobby Southworth
Well then why don’t you explain what happened given you expansive MMA knowledge. While you are at it, why not not post a pick of yourself up? Most of us did…..unless this is what you truly look like.

GSP doesn't finish fights
But you can’t say they have all been boring, for example he didn’t finish Jon Fitch but he absolutely beat the living shit out of Fitch, Fitch just had a lot of heart on that night and refused to give up and took a hard beating. GSP also beat the living shit out of Thiago Alves and that wasn’t boring to watch. Don’t forget GSP BJ Penn 2 where he also beat the living shit out of BJ penn and stopped the fight, so it’s not been all boring. His fight with Hardy wasn’t so impressive, his fight with Shields wasn’t so impressive but at the time same time he completely dominated and never looked in much danger. His fight with Koscheck wasn’t so bad, I don’t think he kept it that safe, he stayed on his feet with Koscheck who is a very good takedown wrestler as well, so that’s not really safe, he stood up with a wrestler, and a wrestler who is also good on his feet, and he beat Koscheck standing and closed his eye and sent him home for 6 months. So true, he doesn’t finish fights, but not all of them are boring, and in most cases he beats the sh!t out of his opponent aka Fitch Alves and Koscheck.
The Hardy, Kos, Shields fights weren't that impressive to me (judging against a highly set bar)
But GSP can be one of the most impressive mixed martial artists in the sport. I can understand why you wouldn’t want to go balls to the wall against Alves or trade submission attempts against Shields but the way I see him engage Shields on the feet wasn’t impressive imo, or his ground performance against Hardy.
I think it’s a good point to make that while Serra might have encouraged him to fight more safely, he didn’t really fight as safe for 3 of his 4 fights after that. It’s overlooked for sure, well presented writeup
