The greatest of all time ?

Most people would agree that Anderson Silva is one of if not the best mixed martial artists of all time. That's not what we're here to talk about . I wrote this fanpost to get some feedback on your thoughts about dominant champions wasting the primes of their career's on meaningless title defenses . After a fighter has cleaned out his division he should be expected to move up in weight . In boxing this is common practice . Sugar Ray Leonard came out of retirement and defeated Hagler for the middleweight title . Roberto Duran is widely considered the greatest lightweight of all time although he wasn't as dominant when he moved up he did it because he had to to be challenged . Now back to Anderson Silva it's my opinion he should have moved up as soon as it became clear that he was head and shoulders above all of his fellow middleweights. All can be forgiven though if he mans up and demands to face Jon Bones Jones . We as fans should be demanding this fight takes place . A win over Jones would further solidify SIlva as the best to have ever set foot in the octagon , all the greats take on the toughest challenges available and Anderson should too .

I see both sides of the arguement

I’ll never think any less of AS if he was to stay in MW and dominate. It’s not his fault he’s embarrassed everyone that’s come his way. The lone exception was the Chael fight, but even then he won. That’s a rematch I’m really looking forward too.

But as a fan, I wanna see him move up. The MW picture has gotten a bit boring in my mind. I’ve started rooting for anyone fighting him to win. Just to mix it up. I’d like to see him fight at LHW and be more challenged against the likes of Shogun, Jones, Shad, even a Hendo rematch would interest me.

Just to make it clear. I’m a AS fan and enjoy watching him fight. But I’ve just gotten fed up of seeing him dominate so easily. Sounds stupid, I know, but can’t help it.

and after Silva beat him, 1 last fight against Jones for the belt and retire a fucking boss. He can run the UFC empire in Brazil

This isn't boxing, he doesn't have to move up. It's not his fault he's that much better than everyone else.

They have weight classes for a reason. Where is the uproar for gsp to move up? Or bones to.go to hw? Andy fought twice at lhw and dominated both times, he doesn’t need to prove anything to anybody. He will go down as the g.o.a.t, his resume speaks for itself.

by MMA Boss on Jan 19, 2012 6:42 AM EST via mobile reply actions

actually there is a ton of people who want gsp to move up

hordes of them, in fact. and many are alsop waiting for jones to fill out and move up to HW. where have you been hiding the past year or 2? how have you missed all that discussion? GSP vs Spider is a weekly debate.

"Here we are with Seraldo Babalu, you did an awesome job, saw why you’re a black belt in jiu-jitsu, getting an awesome submission there, I want to tell me what you see, let’s go ahead and see by the fight, what you saw, in the ring." - Tito (the Head) Ortiz - Great Commentator, or Greatest Commentator.

Watching Anderson Silva jumping up to LHW and fight Bones sounds great

I’m also bored of watching dominant champs lap the division.
Thing is, I don’t agree that they should have to jump up, if they choose not to.
If you can make 185 and whup everyone, then…..more power to you.
Some people suggest that GSP should do the same. That’s even worse to me, as he is a small WW.
We’ll be having this same conversation about Bones in a year or two, if he continues to wreck everyone at LHW.

Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

How d'you mean small WW

D’you mean height wise or weight wise?

I’m in the same boat as you in terms of being bored of watching dominant champs which is why I wouldn’t mind seeing AS move up but will never complain if he doesn’t. Can give out about a guy doing his job too well

I think Scotti means GSPs frame

most WW are 6 footers now and are a bigger build. GSP has so much muscle though, IMO it more than makes up for his lack of stature at WW

Big difference in weight divisions.

Most lighter weights in boxing from a point are 5lbs difference. 7lbs starting from LWW to WW. MMA weights are 15lbs and wrestlers (or other fighters) can win by being more physical, stronger or weight more than their opponents in MMA.

One thing Anderson hasn’t got is wrestling, Jones and GSP have. It’s a big thing. Jones’ wrestling was a game changer against Machida, never mind somebody like Anderson, JDS or Overeem (potentially).

Anderson is approaching his 40s and has had a long career. One of the first thing to leave and athlete (especially a striker) is his reaction time and speed, not power. This is a massive part of Anderson’s game and he’s getting injuries left, right and centre. He’ll retire or lose soon imo and it’ll be a shame when he does because I don’t see him being able to keep up what he’s been doing and what makes him successful.

by grapplefan on Jan 19, 2012 8:02 AM EST reply actions

they were saying all that in the lead up to Belfort

and then all the talk about how his poor wrestling would hold up against Okami. Iceman was most dominant ever at 36-37 and he took damage his entire career. Anderson will be alright

Iceman was the most dominant at 36-37

Knocking out Babalu, Tito Ortiz and co? Silva is part of the Chuck Lidell era but has lasted much longer into the next generation of competition. If he moved to LHW he’d still beat Rampage imo, Shogun would be a good fight if Shogun fights like he did against Machida in the first fight (patient and with kicks).

Liddell was always good at defending the takedowns, Silva is good but not in the same way imo, more reactions, where Liddell had the wrestling background.

lol, I did have to read it a few times. Chuck was a crowd pleaser and at the time used his wrestling just right.

Built his legend knocking people out, fought like he wanted, gained fame. Just a shame he couldn’t see the future otherwise he might have started mixing it up before the Wandy, Franklin fights.

Every career has to end though but he might have been able to make his peace with the sport easier.

Vitor has been past his prime a long time ago. Spectacular finish by Andy but hardly an elite opponent in 2011.

yeah I hope he finds out in the gym too and i've got faith in him

But with the games Andy plays it’s a matter of one mistake. I don’t really remember the Vitor thing but I think as time goes on if Andy does lose a step it’s a fighter like Vitor who could clock him (I know i’m in the minority).

You could well be right and I hope he retires at the right time for him.

Yes. Try to expand it more, Randall. Use other examples in MMA or compare and contrast someone like Penn - who can be an example of going against this philosophy.

Personally, I tend to agree. I would like to see fighters jump up a weight class and challenge themselves with stiff comp.

i'd rather have fighters not cut weight (anything above 5lb is too much) and fight in the right divisions

then you’ll get fair match ups, fair challenges and above all, fair competition.

that being said i do believe silva should fight at lhw, jones at cruiseweight, gsp at mw, penn at lw, edgar at fw, aldo at lw, etc.

by vhw_ on Jan 19, 2012 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

but to do that 5 lb limit there would have to be many more divisions, and there just isn’t enough talent to due that. I think maybe 15 lbs would be doable though

Robinson, Ali, Armstrong, Chavez?

But anyway that wasnt geared towards you per say, its just a general sentiment, that when Dana made public he thought ANderson was not only the current p4p king but also GOAT everybody hopped on the bandwagon.

Show no mercy; for you shall receive none

duran as a lightweight is considered top 3 all time

Robinson and armstrong came before him I dont’t think ali or chavez surpassed him

Excellent choices on Robinson and Armstrong. Duran beating Leonard at WW the first time shows what kind of beast he is

Any dream matchup with lightweight greats should contain Duran, the guy was a monster and probably the best that we can watch a lot of tape of and will be able to “judge” for years for ourselves just because of the video evidence. There was a fighter called Benny Leonard who may have been a FW actually but was famous for knocking out LWs on the reg. Old school fighter so fought much much more often and for longer. Tough as nails and fought the bigger guys.

Willie Pep was a great FW

I’m thinking Duran would have been a bit too physical and ferocious for him, plus a different era so he might have been more technical (arguable I guess). It could have been a great style match up of a man who made his name for being elusive and tough when needed and the relentless beast in Duran.

Just to add to above, Benny Leonard was supposed to be an animal so I think him vs Duran is a dream fight. As is Henry Armstrong vs Duran.

i would love to see bones jones vs anderson... with that said.
Anderson Silva it’s my opinion he should have moved up as soon as it became clear that he was head and shoulders above all of his fellow middleweights

what about chael sonnen? Anderson wasn’t ‘heads and shoulders above" sonnen.. Maybe thats why uncle dana’s not interested in the fight right now..

dont get me wrong, id LOVE to see Anderson finish out his career at 205. but the fact is that he was on his way to making it look easy at MW until he met chael.. that could happen again with someone else he hasn’t fought.

He’s undefeated in the UFC, it’s better to have him move up where you know he’ll be challenged instead of just hoping someone he’s heavily favored against might pull off an upset

Great champions go above and beyond what is required of them , they actively seek to accomplish the impossible . Anderson is one of my favorite fighters but he could done alot more with his career I feel .

maybe, it's the fact that bones is so early in his career..

maybe you’re not thinking about jon?

why does jones have to prove he can beat the p4p king so early in his championship career?

i think it’s a time issue.. the ufc doesn’t want to ruin a good thing when they got two great champs.

This is the mentality that I hate and this is why I made this fanpost

Look Anderson should be demanding to fight Jones because thats the shit legends are made of ! Using Okami as an example , that shit was a mockery . His whole reign has been wasted on worthless title defenses and the same goes for GSP .

look, i would love to see some guys go to different weight classes too,

but the fact is there are weight divisions for a reason.. If anderson wanted to fight bones he’d challenge him..

he obviously doesn’t want a piece of Jones.

i dont think either of them want to fight eachother at this point.

andy is as close to the end of his career as bones is into his..

i think it could be the biggest superfight i would want to see, but i understand why it probably wont happen..

i think anderson still has some challenge out there at mw… and i think bones has ALOT to prove..

Fedor and Anderson, kings of the 2 eras of MMA that we saw up to this day.

Here do I swear fealty and service to Choro, the mightiest and most hung of all Maniacs. In trolling or absence. In living or dying. From this hour henceforth, until my Lord release me…or the banhammer…take me.
