UFC on FX: Jim Miller plans to 'get in the face' of Melvin Guillard and make him fight

Jim Miller

FanPost edited and promoted by MMAmania.com.

UFC lightweight fighter Jim Miller is hoping to get back into the 155-pound title chase when he takes on Melvin Guillard this Friday night (Jan. 20, 2012) at the UFC on FX event from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

So how does he plan on dealing with "The Young Assassin" on fight night?

"Melvin is a dangerous fight for anybody at lightweight, and a majority of guys at 170 (pounds) as well. But he does have weaknesses and the thing with him is you gotta fight him. That's my style. You gotta get in there and press him and get in his face. When guys do that, that's when he makes mistakes. Same as always. My plan is to move forward, make him fight me and make him fight my fight."

After the jump, hear more from Miller including his thoughts on bouncing back from a tough loss, his prediction on UFC 144: "Edgar vs. Henderson," his nephew's progress, the future of Strikeforce, wanting to fight Gilbert Melendez and of course, his epic beard.

Check it out.

It shouldn't be hard.

Now that Melvin doesn’t have Greg Jackson, that fucker will continue to do this flashy, I’m the best ever, no one can touch me shit, and nobody will be there to check his ego and calm him down.

Kay kay let's think rationally here...

Melvin just got HUMILIATED in front of soooooooo many people he knows….

And you think he will be flashy in his next fight, which is the headline? No way, if anything he’ll be really timid and boring.

Greg Jackson > Blackzillians

The Blackzillians are undoing everything good that Jackson did for Guillard.

We witnessed it in his last fight, and he will continue to regress.

He trained at both gyms

But had Jackson corner him. But like you said, there was no corner work in that one since he was beat so quickly. I agree that he will continue to regress now that he’s 100% in S. Florida. Jackson’s was the best move he ever made, and now he’s just throwing it all away.

I like Miller a lot

But, Since Guillard finally figured out that he is a standup fighter, that’s where this fight is going.. Guillard is also a solid wrestler and in his earlier years he was taking it to the ground, and having mixed success and getting submitted, nowadays he purely uses his wrestling as defense to keep it standing, Miller has mediocre hand speed and terrible head movement.. on the other hand Guillard jaw is suspect

by THORAZINE on Jan 18, 2012 11:25 AM EST reply actions

I wouldn't his jaw is really suspect.

The only times he’s been dropped is when he moves forward into a well timed jab and that will drop most people. Forward → + <- Jab = One horrible idea.

Melvin is dangerous when you stand in front of him. Miller should use angles, make Melvin follow him and then change levels for the TD. Once it's on the ground, all Miller from there. Miller via sub.

Melvin’s butt scoot to wall walk move has been unstoppable lately. I don’t think just taking him down once means game over anymore. He’s evolved in that manner in unique fashion.

Guillard really needs to be careful of that standing gullitone , Miller springs that on everyone and doesn’t seem to have an issue grabbing it.

Miller will get his back, get a BT and its game over. Melvin has nothing for him on the ground - absolutely nothing.

this guy is tuff as nails but his physical frame leaves him at a disavantage

Same with frankie edgar hes had a great run but he will lose decisively to henderson.

Hmm...so even if he does lose...how does Frankie Edgar's physical frame leave him at a disadvantaged?

He’s the champ…for a reason…and he beat Maynard who is a massive LW…

ya know something wasnt right with maynard he rarely threw and was flat footed and gassed in rnd 2

you’re not going to get that problem with bendo if he catches frankie 1st rnd as been his signature bendo wont let that opportunity slip by like Maynard did twice.

Bendo has to shoot takedowns often while mixing it up with his striking and kicks, otherwise frankie will simply outbox bendo. Bendo needs to use lots of muay thai and clinches against the cage which he does anyways.

sorry to thread jack

for any of my beer maniacs.

2 beers to check out this weekend.
Representing Melvin Guillard and brewed in Louisiana:
Abita Turbodog

From the Brewery: Turbodog is a dark brown ale brewed with Willamette hops and a combination of pale, crystal and chocolate malts. This combination gives Turbodog its rich body and color and a sweet chocolate toffee-like flavor. Turbodog began as a specialty ale but has gained a huge loyal following and has become one of our flagship brews.

Representing Jim Miller and brewed in New Jersey:
Climax Brewing Nut Brown Ale

From the Brewery: This style of beer is based on the English Mild, which was a combination of a stout and a lighter beer favored by coal miners in Scotland, Ireland and North England.
We’ve brought together the grains used to make both a Stout and a Pale Ale and balanced them in our Nut Brown Ale to produce a beer with a chocolate and molasses flavor and hints of caramel and coffee in the background.

Enjoy Responsibly Maniacs

I lived in Florida for a few years and was lucky enough to enjoy that beer. That is my favorite beer of all time. I have even called the factory and they wont send me any. Gonna have to make a road trip I guess

they have a beer finder app

on their website

I went 0-2 against Phasebook. Why do I feel that I am just padding his record?" Next time I won’t pick a guy whose best weapon is a somersault against a real bad guy like Scarface.

they don't ship that shit out west

I think Ohio is as far as it goes. So most west coasters haven’t had it. I drink it when I go back east, it’s aight.

I saw a video of him working heavy on his wrestling...

Why is it the worst danger?

He’ll need to mix it up with Miller because Miller will be mixing it up for sure

Worst danger because he will be entering a clinch contest with a fighter who is superior on the ground and is just as strong as him.

I dont think so

His wrestling is overrated imo. He will get destroyed on the ground very quickly. I see him locked up within 1 minute of being on the mat with Miller.

My opinion of Melvin has been the same

He’ll always beat lesser comp, but anytime someone good fights him he loses. Miller is top 5 imo and Melvin is top 15 on a good day. Miller does something crazy like a flying heelhook and subs Melvins stupid ass

Everyone thinks that the only chance Miller has is a sub, he's a powerful striker with a solid chin

He could wrestle Melvin easily to the ground. Melvin is a state champion. But Jim Miller is an NCAA D1 wrestling champion. If I was Miller i would’ve worked alot on striking, striking and more striking, when was the last time you seen Melvin get hit with a leg kick? This fight is very interesting

are you that pissed off his BJJ isn't up to your standards?

I dono about you, but there are enough things for me to worry about without having to get pissed at a fighter because I think his skills are lacking.

Yea this thread seems to be under rating Miller’s hands. Miller absolutely can come in a roll right through Melvin with just the stand up. It’s a dangerous fight for both.
