Happy birthday to boxing icon Muhammad Ali. "The Greatest" turns 70 today (Jan. 17, 2012). Any elder Maniacs out there want to share their favorite Ali moment from the glory days of the "sweet science?"

A very impressive moment from ali was when he got dropped by that frazier left hook and stood back up immediately (unbelievable)

Agreed
I am partial to the first Liston fight. I love when bullies get bullied.

I know i've posted this before, but here is Ali's MMA fight against Antonio Inoki..
For those curious about why Inoki is kicking from the ground here is the background:
Prior to agreeing to face Inoki in 1976, Muhammad Ali and his team attended one of Kanji’s matches, where they gained great respect for his submission grappling skills and powerful leg strikes. This led Team Ali to stipulate that they would only face Inoki if he agreed to only utilize his leg strikes with one knee touching the ground. This rule put Kanji at a severe disadvantage, but he agreed nonetheless. Kanji would go on to battle Ali to a 3 – 3 draw.

He beat Foreman before that fight even started
He was in his head.
I also remember he and Smokin’ Joe almost coming to blows on a few occasions, YEARS after they fought.
Ali was the greatest in an era of greats.
He was the most famous man on the planet, when I was a kid. More famous than presidents, popes or royalty. He was smart. He was fast. He was the greatest athlete I have ever had the pleasure to watch compete.

Some guys are so talented
That they make every other pro look bad.
Take your Gretzky…Howe, Lemieux, Jordan or Tiger and I believe Ali was more dominant than all of them.

I don’t entirely agree. He was the best, he is smart, he was the most popular guy on the planet, but I don’t put him up there with the Gretzky’s and Jordans of his sport. That is reserved for Sugar.
Fighters fight. Snitches Snitch.
I hope you mean Robinson and not Leonard...lol
Ali was a scary ass lightning fast heavyweight, with footwork like I have never seen since.
He beat half of the Hall Of Fame.
Obviously, it’s debateable.
So I’m just gloing to go ahead and say I’m right….lol

I am going to come to Canada, drink your beer, bitch about it, then complain about the food in your fridge, eat it, then take a poop in your toilet and “forget” to flush. Leonard….PFFFFT.
Fighters fight. Snitches Snitch.
I LOVE ALI
He is my favorite boxer, ever. But, he aint got shit on Robinson.
Fighters fight. Snitches Snitch.
I was ball busting about Leonard
There is argument to be made for Joe Louis as well. Maybe a few others….LaMotta etc.
My view may be as a result of seeing Ali fight in my lifetime.
No flushing? Meh. You’ll drink 8 Canadian beers and pass out and shit yourself anyway ;)

I can show you a pretty solid beer that matches up even, alcohol wise, to La Fin Du Monde.

got my american wheat bottled last night
2kg rahr pilsner, 3kg briess white wheat, 20IBUs (1oz hallertau with FWH), ended up with 4G after boil. OG was 1.055 and FG was 1.011 (almost 70% mash efficiency). 3 volumes of CO2 (yes i know, i know… too much for the style). Got 2 cases out of it.
uncarbed is fucking delicious, i’ll give it a week for carbing and then i’m going to town with it

i had 15 days off work so i brewed that and a semi sierra nevada pale ale clone
i fucked up BIG TIME in the hops variety for the snpa, a complete fuck up by misreading the labels. It does smell & taste good though, gonna have to wait another week before transfering to secondary and do some dry hop with 1oz of cascade. Hopefully it will be good but it’s not going to be exactly as i wanted.
You could a fanpost with your brewing process once you get back to it, that would be greatly appreciated!

Foreman pointed out the exact moment he was beaten.
Jim Lampley asked him a couple of years ago if, at some point before the end, Foreman was aware that he was going to lose the match. To Lampley’s surprise, Foreman replied: “Yep!”.
Foreman said that he was hitting Ali with his best shots, and multiple times for each shot. Nobody had withstood a fraction of what Ali endured. In the 7th round, Ali asked Foreman: “George, is that the best you’ve got?”. And Foreman thought to himself: “Yep. That’s it.”

Just a few examples...
Muhammad Ali on integration:
“We who follow the teachings of Elijah Muhammad (leader of the Nation of Islam) don’t want to be forced to integrate. Integration is wrong. We don’t want to live with the white man”
Muhammad Ali on intermarriage:
“No intelligent black man or black woman in his or her right black mind wants white boys and white girls coming to their homes to marry their black sons and daughters.”
Muhammad Ali on homosexuality:
“All Jews and gentiles are devils… Blacks are no devils… Everything black people doing wrong comes from [the white people]: Drinking, smoking, prostitution, homosexuality, stealing, gambling: It all comes from [the white people]”
In an interview with Playboy Ali said “A black man should be killed if he’s messing with a white woman.” When the interviewer asked about black women crossing the colour barrier, Ali responded: “Then she dies. Kill her, too.”
And I haven’t even touched on what he said about Joe Frazier lookin like a monkey.
Martin Luther on Muhammad Ali:
“When Cassius Clay joined the Black Muslims he became a champion of the racial segregation and that is what we are fighting against.”

Being on the receiving end of racism will do that to you. Do you want to be around people who don;t want to be with you? If someone told you to sit at the back of the bus, I think you’d be perfectly within your right to say, To hell with you I don’t even want to be in the same bus with you.
He was about helping black people take pride in themselves, and to believe they were not inferior. Everything he said was in reaction to the unmentionable dehumanization and abuse black people suffered. He may have been a little over the top, but that was his nature- he was a larger than life personality. He was also a gentle, kind and genuinely loving person. To call him racist is patently ridiculous.
And yes, many of his friends were white :-) Including Angelo Dundee and Howard Cosell.
how can you even justify it?
Is it ok for a victim of black-on-white crime to say all black people are the same?? No.
If someone told you to sit at the back of the bus, I think you’d be perfectly within your right to say, To hell with you I don’t even want to be in the same bus with you.
Right. If you speak to that person, not generalize every single white person.
The guy went on national television and spoke about the “white devil”, and ofcourse nobody said anything because white people aren’t supposed to defend themselves – it’s called “white guilt”. It’s accepted racism. But not with me. Racism is a two-way street.
"You never know. I don't know. You know?" -Nick Diaz
MLK did support Ali. He also said that any intelligent white man or women wouldn’t let their kids marry to a black man/girl so I don’t know where you’re getting that from. Don’t try paint him as this radical racist, he was far from it. He was always rational, how about you read/watch the full interview instead reading nonsense online. Take some time out to find out more about him before posting you ignorant chump. We’ve all benefited from Ali, period.

Hey Dumbass
Ali LEFT THE NATION OF ISLAM so quoting him from his days in the NOI is pretty fucking retarded.
As for calling Frazier a monkey, how’s that racist? If someone looks like a monkey, then they look like a monkey, doesn’t have something to do with race, plus maybe you forgot, that Ali is black too, God are you seriously fucking retarded?
"I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong... No Viet Cong ever called me nigger"
Epic quote.
He also said a lot of crap while he was in his hardcore Nation of Islam period though.
“We who follow the teachings of Elijah Muhammad don’t want to be forced to integrate. Integration is wrong. We don’t want to live with the white man; that’s all.”
“No intelligent black man or black woman in his or her right black mind wants white boys and white girls coming to their homes to marry their black sons and daughters.”
It’s not outlandish to hear this from a black kid who grew up in America in the 50s though. MIssissipi was burning.
Well, anybody who knows me knows I'm no fan of dictionaries or reference books. They're elitist. Constantly telling us what is or isn't true. Or what did or didn't happen.

and i support his refusal to go to war.

It ain't. Things are just a lot more subtle.
"To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man." - William Shakespeare (Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 3)
they thrive on subtlety, blatant as it is
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law
Since all things are God, in all things thou seest just so much of God as thy capacity affordeth thee.
Modern morality and manners suppress all natural instincts, keep people ignorant of the facts of nature and make them fighting drunk on bogey tales.
No one understands what it means but its provocative, gets the people going.
even back then there were plenty of non-racist white people
but they got painted with the same brush. Just like how alot of white people paint all black people with one brush. its called racism.
even martin luther king didnt support Ali.
"You never know. I don't know. You know?" -Nick Diaz
He actually spoke at a KKK rally and got an ovation for supporting their segregation.
so, how’s he any different?
"You never know. I don't know. You know?" -Nick Diaz
He was brainwashed to a certain degree, TW. You really are ignoring the social context, though. Pardon the pun but its not really as black and white as you are presenting it.
"To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man." - William Shakespeare (Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 3)
Yea, the people around him that introduced him to the "nation" had influence him a lot
They tryed to get their message out through him

your right, the Nation of Islam used him to get their message out.
but he also supported them. you can say he was brainwashed, but how’s he any different than any other religious person in the world? Aren’t they all brainwashed?
"You never know. I don't know. You know?" -Nick Diaz
Yes. Most religions and cults do brainwash. Again, just my opinion as I am not a theologian or an expert by any means.
"To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man." - William Shakespeare (Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 3)
but you can say that about anyone then.
So you can then justify a white racist KKK member because he was raised in the south by racist parents, so he really had no chance. In that case everyone is just a victim of their environment and should never be responsible for their actions/words.
"You never know. I don't know. You know?" -Nick Diaz
Again, you are not wrong. Its a valid point but since we did not grow up during that era I think you are really simplifying a complex issue. Just my take.
"To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man." - William Shakespeare (Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 3)
Shit was different back then man.
If you were black in the fifties/sixties, there is a good chance you didn’t care for white people because of the way you were treated by them. There is racism now,but that shit back then was something else all together.
Chubby chasin johnson fan. I foolishly picked an unproven middleweight over belfort. And now i'm stuck with this sig for 2 weeks.
I think there's no question that policies are less appalling
It’s just that in my experience, I still know a lot of people who think that white equals some sort of genetic superiority.
I can’t blame a guy who came up in a pre civil rights era for being mad at white people.

Absolutely. Jordan is the best example of this.

Soccer...sort of like gay hockey on a giant lawn - Scottidog 1/12/12
The first line I agree with... he was quoted as saying that "Republicans buy gym shoes, too." And your 2nd line sounds like tin foil hat time. The NBA would have become the way it was one way or the other - Jordan was just there at the right time.
"To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man." - William Shakespeare (Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 3)
tin foil hat? for basketball? LMAO...it is no conspiracy theory
“Be like Mike” was the mantra of the generation after me growing up. Play a selfish game where you are the focal point of the offense and plug in grinders around to make sure you can get the ball fed to you.
There haven’t been teams like the Celtics, Lakers and Sixers of the early 80’s, although last year’s Dallas squad is close.
It is more of me showing my old man tendencies than my tin foil hat tendencies, lol.
Soccer...sort of like gay hockey on a giant lawn - Scottidog 1/12/12
Jordan did play as a team member after getting knocked over the head vs. the Pistons. So, yeah, tin foil hat time. And the Be Like Mike mantra was Nike/Gatorade and all of the other old timers who saw MJ as a cash cow. Go knock on their door first.
"To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man." - William Shakespeare (Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 3)
