Best event of 2011: UFC 139 featuring Shogun Rua vs Dan Henderson
Earlier this month, we here at MMAmania.com embarked on a quest to determine the best of the best in the year 2011. The final category voted on by you, the fans, was the "Event of the Year." And while there were plenty of worthy candidates, there were two that stood out from the rest.
They also happened to occur not long before the voting process started. A case of what's freshest instead of what's best?
Perhaps but the eventual winner, the UFC 139: "Shogun vs. Henderson" event, featured the "Fight of the Year" in Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio Rua, so it is somewhat fitting that it emerged victorious. The show also saw Wanderlei Silva stop Cung Le and Urijah Faber earn a bantamweight title shot against Dominick Cruz by besting Brian Bowles.
Then again, the other event in the running, UFC 140: "Jones vs. Machida," was headlined by the "Fighter of the Year," Jon Jones, who defended his light heavyweight title in spectacular fashion with a submission win over Lyoto Machida. Plus, this was the same fight card that gave us the "Submission of the Year" when Frank Mir snapped Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's arm like a twig.
You decided, Maniacs, so maybe you can tell us how UFC 139 beat out UFC 140. Do so after checking out the full results of our poll for the best event of 2011 after the jump.
Poll results:
- UFC 139: "Shogun vs. Henderson" -- 946 votes
- UFC 140: "Jones vs. Machida" -- 873 votes
- UFC 132: "Cruz vs. Faber" -- 184 votes
- UFC 129: "St. Pierre vs. Shields" -- 179 votes
- Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Silva" -- 105 votes
- Other -- 103 votes

Yeah, i agree wolf
You can back and forth over so many different variables but the final choices by the punters have been fair and reasonable.
Your girlfriend is smoking.
Good day.

are you referring to the guy
wolfmanhowls or whatever? because when I first joined people told me about him.
No, I’m not him, it’s my understanding that he was a braggart, douche bag, dipshit type of guy?
Everything and anything is possible, or nothing
That must be the guy?
He may well have been all of the above, but his gf was very tidy. Sorry other wolfman, it’s not easy keeping up with who’s who in “the pack”.

132 was by far the best in my opinion
It was awesome. Even the prelims kicked ass. What’s with the hate…139 was good and 140 was alright. But 132 was a dynamite card.
Condit koing stun gun with a flying knee
Melvin’s sick KO
Tito’s return…who wasn’t out of their seats for that one
Wandy vs Leben was fast, quick, and awesome
Faber vs Cruz was one of the top 5 fights of the year
The lime green octagon and bakini’s. Come on now people.
I agree. I was there in person and it was the best UFC card I’ve ever been to. Beginning to end, it was incredible.

how many have you been to mate?

132 could compete with 139 for second best card, but 140 was easily the best card from start to finish.
ufc 139: Wanderlei vs Cung & Shogun vs, Hendo alone might beat 132, but there was a couple other goodies on that card..
how could either compete with 140?
- 9 out of 12 fights were finished.
- some nice KO’s. Jared Hamman vs. Constantinos Philippou, Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Igor Pokrajac and Mark Hominick vs. Chan Sung Jung all knocked the fuck out.
- Lil Nog beating the shit out of Tito’s body.
- Big Nog showing the world that tapping is for pussies!
- Machida showing the world that tapping is for pussies!
it really doesn’t get any better then that.
One Two buckle my shoe.

+2
How was this not even listed?
Credible P4P Rankings.
#1: Silva (destroys top fighters making them look like they don't belong and has done it for years)
#2: Jones (destroys everybody including top guys)
#3: GSP (long time champ but can't stop people that others can who aren't blown up LWs which isn't so dominating compared to #1 and #2... hence P4P)

Yea i know Idk how it wasn’t on the list. The crowd was crazy even through the Prelims. That was the best event but oh well

i agree, Rio should have made the list for sure..
imo, it could be considered 2nd best.
One Two buckle my shoe.
For pure excitement in fights i thought 138 had to be there.
Want a great looking card but i enjoyed it heaps.

A fair call imo.
The final Strike Force event of 2010 is still my all time favourite card though. For pure entertainment it was just mad…..
