Best fight of 2011: Dan Henderson vs Shogun Rua at UFC 139

Dan Henderson (left) and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (right) engaged in an incredible 25-minute bout at UFC 139 on Nov. 19, 2011, in San Jose, California.

Earlier this month, we here at MMAmania.com embarked on a quest to determine the best of the best in the year 2011. Up first was the "Fight of the Year," a tough category considering all the outstanding brawls spread across the UFC, Strikeforce, Bellator and beyond.

But one stood out above the rest -- Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio Rua at UFC 139 on Nov. 19, 2011, in San Jose, California.

There was no title on the line nor was it a number one contender bout. It was simply two old legends from Pride FC whose paths never crossed until now. And the bloody five-round war that ensued was nothing short of spectacular.

Henderson came roaring out of the gate with his trademark right hand, landing big shots that bruised up Rua, who looked overmatched. But "Shogun" persevered and eventually came roaring back, finishing the fight with a dominant fifth round.

When all was said and done, "Hendo" was awarded a unanimous decision win. It was deemed somewhat controversial, as fans of the Brazilian cried foul at the judges scoring but we could all agree on one thing.

It was one hell of a fight.

The results of our poll for the best fight of 2011 are after the jump.

Star-divide

Poll results:

  1. Dan Henderson vs. Shogun Rua -- 1,657 votes
  2. Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard 3 -- 312 votes
  3. Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard 2 -- 262 votes
  4. Eddie Alvarez vs. Michael Chandler -- 208 votes
  5. Nick Diaz vs. Paul Daley -- 132 votes
  6. Diego Brandao vs. Dennis Bermudez -- 76 votes
  7. Diego Sanchez vs. Martin Kampmann -- 70 votes
  8. Other -- 47 votes
  9. Daniel Straus vs. Nazareno Malegarie -- 15 votes

Jason Miller is a retard with straight hair and curly teeth.Hes a couple of dolly mixtures short of a quarter and spends his time swinging of a tyre attached to a rope! I should have listened to the MMA royalty on here, especially Jay,ANS and ViolentMike who kept reminding me that Mikes wrestling was the best at 185 and 205 and that if Greg Jackson,Randy Couture,Blackhouse,ATT or team quest ever needed any tips on game planning Wolfsalir is just a phone call away

I never said Hendo / Shogun was bad. But god damn, that shit can not compare to the cream of the crop this year! I mean cmon! Name value does it for you fuckin fag?

Nothing touches Bendo / Guida. That is by far the best MMA fight of the year. Easily. It had everything, people getting rocked, sick scrambles, a straight dog fight, back and forth war, wrestling, subs, hands. Cardio. Cardio. Cardio.

By far the best fight…

Hendo / Shogun doesn’t even take the best brawl. Diaz / Daley tops that easily. Diaz / Daley was flat out amazing.

And the runner ups for fight of the year have to be Edgar / Maynard 2 and 3, and Alvarez / Chandler.

Those fights, were fucking ridiculous. Those are 5 fights, that easily top Hendo / Shogun..

Diaz vs Daley wasn't a brawl

Diaz clowned that punk and tuned him up right

one of the greatest fights of all time (not just 2011)

I’ve seen and been a part of many fights all over the world and this is one of the more memorable..

I think Nick Diaz vs Paul Daley was better personally. Frankie vs Maynard 2 and 3 as well. It’s just those guys don’t have the name value of those two.

The Bendo-Guida fight was only a good one because Bendo stifled Guida's stupid hugging style

Otherwise it would have gone down like every other Guida fight. Death by huggy bear.

by unambig on Jan 1, 2012 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

It turned out to be a great all round MMA scrap

striking, subs, wrestling. I’m so glad that Bendo got the W, I would hardly be excited for Guida v Edgar if i’m honest.

I thought Shogun was going out after 3 rounds.

No, it doesn't.

It exemplifies the zombie-like following of the current ’Tough man" fans. Two guys with shitty cardio fighting for one round, and then just kind of swinging their arms for the rest of the fight.

No… just no. If the fighters were named “Fred Smith” and “Harry Jones”, people would be bitching how bad the fight was and how both fighters sucked. But because of the names, people want to believe it was actually good.

It wasn’t.

Name factor point is valid

I can see your point and i’m biased with Shogun but I give him credit because of the beating he took for 3 rounds. To me it helps justify any sloppiness. I give Dan credit for having the cardio for 3 hard rounds … kind of. He was methodical but he still must have used a lot of energy putting the beating down.

I’d love for Shogun to come in looking amazing, I was shocked that Dan just threw him to the ground and caught him so quick.

What you saw as bad cardio I saw as two men absorbing blows that would have knocked out lesser fighters

What you saw as two men just swinging their arms, I saw as two of the game’s elitist warriors put every piece of their heart and soul into crushing the other man. And in the end, the man who had taken the most abuse, the most punishment, amazingly recovered and finished in a dominant position on top, raining down punches.

It was one of the best fights in UFC history, let alone fight of the year.

I agree with you to a point you also have to consider how many people watch bellator as opposed to the vast amount of people that watch the ufc. You got plenty of jackasses out there that say " yeah I train ufc" when they mean mma I’ve never heard anyone say " yeah i train. Bellator". But you are right mma has some stupid fans. But i saw both fights the Eddie and chandler one was awesome and they went hard for the whole fight showcasinf every aspect of mma. But the hendo shogun fight was simply amazing THE FIRST TIME I SAW IT. Idk for me I can’t rewatch fights overs and overs unless I’m trying to study a style so i can understand mma more.

by zesotheclown on Jan 1, 2012 4:47 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I have to agree.

When I read the blogs the night of the fights, everyone including DW said this was the fight of the year and I couldn’t have disagreed any more.
The fight reminded me of old UFC fights when nobody had cardio. Like watching a tank abbot fight… Fun… But not really a great fight

by Boobz on Jan 1, 2012 3:40 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Except it wasn’t Tank, it was 2 top ranked LHW’s. Both contenders, both talented. Both would run through most of their division. So cut the ‘it was like a bar fight’ BS, it was far from one. That’s coming from me, I’ve been in hundreds of bar fights. Come see me kid, I’ll show you how they go down.

It wasn't insane

It happened to be an above average fight in a minor league, which perhaps skews the perception of the fight itself. You don’t give homerun of the year to a AAA player or goal of the year to a guy in the American Hockey League.

by unambig on Jan 1, 2012 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

As I said

a UFC shill. Anything that isn’t UFC is automatically substandard to you.

So your opinion on best fights and so on really should just be limited to the UFC, since you can’t have an objective opinion on anything else.

If someone watches only the NHL are they just an NHL shill?

I mean, the best of the best of the best only fight in the NHL. Sure, you get a few odd good games in the Czech or Russian leagues. But everyone knows the action happens in the NHL.

Chandler-Alvarez was a minor league fight among two guys speculatively not even top 10 in the UFC. So, I take that with a grain of salt. It was an ok fight. I watched it once. Never think about it unless people remind me.

by unambig on Jan 1, 2012 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

Are you trying to compare the UFC to the NHL?

derp. Let’s say, if you only consider Montreal games to matter while all the other teams don’t, then you are a Montreal shill.

Nah

I just like watching the best competition. I enjoyed watching Diaz vs Daley. I watched a few good minor leagues fights. I admit to not watching Bellator because it’s a third rate minor league.

And we’ve all seen what happens to most superstars from the minor leagues. They come to the UFC and get destroyed easily. The latest example being Santiago.

by unambig on Jan 1, 2012 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

The Santiago that got ko'd from guard? (was it)

Matched up against a power puncher to help build him up for the success story of the year. Then Maia. Bad matchmaking (for Santiago) if you ask me.

Santiago isn’t needed like Overeem or Hioki so he will be put in bad matchups like he was. Matchmaking makes a big difference. Bisping fights Jorge Rivera and Jason Miller while the rest of the top of the division is pitted against eachother for a reason.

And “holy shit, holy shit, holy shit, holy shit” for the latter. Just found that one more entertaining.

Afte reem beat brock

Joker has been laying low, I’m sure he’ll pop up and pretend friday never happened . I don’t think calling someone a dumb ass for saying aldo vs hom was better than hendo vs shogun is worthy of a minus.

dumbass?

can you point to where I said anything about better? maybe you lack the metal fortitude to decipher the cryptic message of “maybe I am biased but I enjoyed…”

you little twat. sit down, shut up and if someone around here wants your opinion they will give it to you.

awesome fight

Shogun took more punishment than I think I’ve ever seen…gotta admit these guys are two of the toughest S.o.b.’s on the planet….unlike Brock

All were great fights.....

..these type of “The Best” acticles just try to get a rise out of all the weenies out there, who like to talk sh*t on their keyboards. You could make a case for many of those fights being “The best”…..let’s just say they were all fantastic fights and leave it at that.

Sanchez took a beating and gave a beating against Kampmann…was it “the best”? I dunno but man did he show a ton of heart. All those fightw were outstanding and all the fighters should have our respect….I for one thank them all.

Well yeah

they’re designed to let people express their opinions. Nothing wrong with that.

It was a good fight

But the Joe Rogan bias probably swayed a lot more people. He didn’t stop blabbing through the whole thing.

Not my pick for fight of the year

Both guys were gassed early which is somewhat typical for both fighters…Give them credit for hanging in there and showing a lot of heart and toughness but I’ll take a fight like the Edgar Maynard fights or some of the others on the list…..Brandao-Bermudez was awesome but only being a 1 rounder it’s hard to count that one..
