Nick Diaz has finally spoken and he's not happy about being removed from his welterweight title fight against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 137 on Oct. 29 in Las Vegas.
The Stockton slugger released a YouTube video in which he discussed his feelings on the events that occurred today, namely that he was taken out of his fight in favor of Carlos Condit thanks to no-showing two straight press conferences.
And while he didn't offer an exact explanation for not showing up, he did offer an apology of sorts:
"I'm sorry I didn't make it to the beauty pageant but I've never not showed up to a fight and I've never backed out of a fight in my life. It's not what I do. I just wanted to throw that out there."
That's not all he had to say ... not by a long shot. Watch the video he released after the jump and for those that can't watch, a transcription of what he said is included.

I was down in San Franciso at the last minute trying to get on an airplane this morning to go to a press conference for the UFC. Wanted me to fight for the title against Georges St. Pierre and now they're telling me that they're going to give the fight to Carlos Condit, which I think is ridiculous. Georges thinks it's a great idea because Carlos Condit poses an even greater threat so I guess that just leaves me out. It's funny, one second I'm about to come into some money, do a little bit of boxing, probably lose some teeth but I'm ready to get paid.
"I'll fight whoever, whatever, anything. I'd definitely rather fight GSP of course but I was ready to do some boxing. And they didn't like that so they got me out of that. And they got me in the fight with GSP for the same money or more money or whatever but now it looks like they get to save money and I don't get paid and I'm locked in a new contract with all these deal makers making deals. All I know is I'm ready to fight. I'm sorry I didn't make it to the beauty pageant but I've never not showed up to a fight and I've never backed out of a fight in my life. It's not what I do. I just wanted to throw that out there. I don't know. What are you going to do? I'm ready to fight and I think that this is uh, pretty much done here. So, peace out."

Diaz stated from his own mouth he was about to have his big payday. If there is just one time in your life to ‘play the game’, it was then…and he blew it. It’s a shame, really. I was looking forward to a Diaz/GSP fight, regardless of the outcome. If someone offered me my big payday (if such a thing existed) but said it required I do a little PR for the company, you can bet your ass I’d be there on time and playing the part, even if I didn’t really want to.

I can’t disagree with that. As a whole, I’d like to see a higher standard of pay across the board for fighters. Having said that, I know nothing about how their business runs or whether there’s enough money in the sport to pay large salaries to too many fighters.

I remember years ago I read or heard ( can’t remember what sports show it was on) that some of the best basketball players play street ball all across the country…the difference between those guys playing on the street and playing in the NBA is the guys in the NBA know how to “play the game”…meaning they do all the promo stuff…

I think if I was writing the contract I’d put some kind of no-show penalty on there… $5,000 from your paycheck every mandatory press conference etc. you miss. A lot of people keep talking about Diaz being a fighter and it shouldn’t matter if he skips media crap – he fights with his fists and is entertaining to watch in the cage. But he can also fight in other ways without his fists. He can fight for bigger paydays by honoring his contractual obligations when what he wants to do is flip the bird to the media. He can fight to make at least minimally responsible decisions that honor his coach, his gym, and his family. But he acts like a pretty selfish and immature kid.
The UFC is a business and the fighters sign contracts containing various obligations outside the ring. The fighters can negotiate and ask for things to be adjusted in the contracts. Nick signed his contract which included giving his word to participate in all the media crap. He further gave his word directly to DW that he would show up for the pressers. That media crap might not matter to me on fight night, but it does matter in terms of the business side of things. It equates more exposure in the media which equates to more PPV buys which equals more money in Diaz’s pocket.
If he could get rich via street fights, it seems like he’d be a whole lot happier in some back alley. Unfortunately, the big money is in the UFC cage and that comes with some obligations that many fighters don’t exactly enjoy. But it’s part of what helps put money in their pockets. It could have made Nick a very wealthy man. But he just doesn’t get it.

2 things to say about Diaz
First. This video provides some insight. He says, and shows, that he is driving back from San Francisco to Stockton. Why was he in San Francisco? To catch a flight to the press event. So why did he miss the flight? Was it intentional? Accidental? Who knows. But the fact that he was in San Fran at least shows intent to attend the Presser, and it may save him his job at least.
Second. This whole ordeal today brings to memory lines from a Lupe Fiasco song.

Diaz is under heavy criticism right now from fans and haters alike. Childish, ducking, moron, stoner, idiot, etc, etc are words being tossed around heavily. But really, in any other context, (such as music, politics, editorial) Nick Diaz would be acclaimed. He doesn’t follow the mainstream, he doesn’t follow petty rules, he does what he wants to. He goes against the grain. He refuses to let himself to become a slave to the UFC, as many of us are slaves to our own work situations and social obligations. For better or for worse, Nick Diaz is a free man.
I think
Many of us here wish we were as bold in real life as Nick is in his (minus the thuggish aura). How many of us here have the balls to tell our boss, “Piss off, I don’t wanna come in on Saturday.”? Not many of us. We see Nick as an idiot, but he likely sees us as cowards.
Obviously, Nick has the face the repercussions for his actions. But he lives one hell of a life that we will never experience.

I’m not gonna get credit at my job for just ‘trying’ to show up. As fans we do wanna “just see the fights”. I am pissed as this would have likely been an entertaining fight. But if DW starts letting the fighters piss on their contractual obligations MMA will be heading down the same path that destroyed boxing.
It’s okay to hold Nick accountable for his decisions. He was out of the UFC for a reason and when he signed his new contract, playing the media game was a part of it. Nick is like a kid whose parent’s threaten to pluck his eyebrows out one by one if he misses curfew yet again and then acts surprised when they follow through.
Time for Mr. Diaz to grow up.

Well part of my post was pointing out that we do not know why Nick did not make the flight and why he did not contact anyone. We simply do not know, anything else is pure speculation. Did he have a cell phone on him? Was his phone dead? Did he have a cell phone signal in San Fran airport? Who knows, we can guess all night long.
You are right that it is okay to hold Nick accountable for his decisions. Which was another point I made in my post. I for one, would rather have seen Dana White dock a percentage amount of Nicks pay as opposed to pulling him out of the fight all together.
This is an unfortunate outcome for Nick, Dana, the UFC, and fans alike. Everyone.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been a fan of Nick Diaz the fighter since the Lawler fight. But Nick Diaz outside the ring? I sorta tolerate it to get to the fights. He can be an incredibly entertaining fighter, win or lose. I love his scrappiness in the cage even if he fought foolishly sometimes.
But he was out of the UFC for a reason. He knew this could happen — it was in his contract. He missed two pressers in succession and missed more than two flights to Toronto that the UFC rescheduled for him. Cesar offered to go with him to Toronto, then offered to drive him to the airport. People have been going out of their way to help Nick succeed in an area that he resists and resents. So, he missed the Toronto press crap. If he shows up in Vegas, Toronto’s gaff is off the books. But can he manage that? Nope.
Doesn’t have a cell-phone? Like the one he’s making the video with? Can’t borrow someone else’s or stop and use a phone somewhere? If this actually mattered to him in the way it should have, he would have moved heaven and frickin’ earth to make one damn phone call.
I’m out of patience. Everyone callin’ for DW’s head — this is on Diaz, end of story.

I was very excited about this fight. Just a bunch of BS. Nick fuck you. Ive always enjoyed him as a fighter and couldn’t stand him as a person, but I still made it a point to watch him. Yeah its a shame. I'm not a big Diaz fan, but he is a good fighter and he needs to be fighting the guys in the UFC.
But after this I don’t beleive thats gonna be happening. When you piss Dana off and mess with his money, then your screwed when fighting in the UFC is concerned
He didn’t want any of GSP and got his wish. Now he can pretend it was the UFC’s fault when he was the one who failed to meet his obligations. I was looking forward to watching GSP clown him.

matters or has been mentioned already, but Alligiant Airlines (a pretty inexpensive carrier I have flown from Vegas to Des Moines on before) does fly from Stockton Metropolitan Airport to Las Vegas…it looks like they don’t fly Wednesdays, but hell he could have flown in on Tuesday and stayed the night at a Motel 6…Why drive to Frisco to catch a flight when he could have flown from his homie town?

I find it funny how the majority of the people on here continuously call Diaz a complete idiot, etc,etc., when if they had some sense and did a little homework on him they would (I hope) realize they’re wrong. to think of him as some lazy stoner who’s continuously whining in an effort to get more money, is laughable. The guy is definately not very articulate with his words, but he’s a smart man. Vocab and social attitude don’t have anything to do with intelligence. The fact that this guy is a smart fighter and that he does understand how it all works, tells me this. You can’t be an execellant, smart ground fighter/student of the game of mix martial arts…and be an idiot. Nick also reguarly competes in triathalons. this takes a ridiculous amount of discipline and training to do. Nick is an athlete..he’s an elite athlete to say the least. he may smoke dope, but who gives a shit really, if he’s clearly out getting hard exercise, training constantly. he’s an extremelly healthy dude who chooses to smoke and do his thing. Dana should have realized this might be a problem and should have made precautions about the press-conference…not sure how but the fact is Nick got pulled for not doing a press conference…the question is who benefits from these press-conferences anyway? they seem pointless but all sports do them i guess

I have never liked Nick Diaz and it pisses me off to know that he is a very talented fighter with no morals. He could be one of the best fighters of all time he had any discipline….but he doesn’t nor will he ever. Dana should have have never let him come back. I think that the UFC should set code of conduct like in other sports. Remember when Jessie on TUF had that drunken casino thing and Dana made a big deal out of it and took him off the fight card and spoke out about public image and the sport. Then a few days later Rampage had that police chase, made the news and got locked up and Dana did nothing and said nothing. It will always bug me how the UFC will always put money ahead of talent and pick and choose what is accepted on a day to day thing.
