STRIKEFORCE: "BARNETT VS. KHARITONOV" PLAY-BY-PLAY PRELIM CARD COMMENTARY (HDNET):
Kevin Haggerty here.

Mike Kyle
 vs.
Marcos Rogerio de Lima

Round one: Kyle comes out doing the "Jersey Shore" fist pump. Cool. Kyle comes out with a flurry of punches, missing. De Lima answers with a decent body shot. De Lima lands decent body kick. Kyle working the jab. Kyle with a nice leg kick.  De Lima responds with a nice leg kick of his own. Kyle's jabs are starting to get through. De Lima looking defensive and not attacking so far. Kyle making excellent use of his reach advantage. Good exchange of punches between both fighters. Pretty even to this point. De Lima looks hurt. Kyle is beginning to land his punches effectively. Under a minute left and de Lima still looks wobbled. Kyle is hammering away with jabs. Round ends with Kyle landing several punches to the head. Close to a 10-8 round for Kyle.

Round two:
De Lima starts off with a couple very nice leg kicks. Kyle goes back to jabbing and de Lima answers with a couple of punches this time. De Lima with another good combination. De Lima with a nasty leg kick. Kyle starting to back up a bit now. De Lima getting a bit wild with his strikes. Kyle finally checks the leg kick. Kyle with a decent body punch, but de Lima counters with another loud kick to the front leg. Kyle goes back to the jab, which seems to have a little less pop behind it now. Kyle gets de Lima up against the fence and then takes his opponent down. De Lima wall-walks back to his feet. De Lima complained of a low knee but the referee does not react. Kyle jumps on de Lima and gets a few good shots in before the end of the round. Kyle most likely took the round back near the end. 10-9 for Kyle.

Round three: De Lima probably needs to finish Kyle to get a win here. De Lima lands a nice leg kick-to-head punch combination. Kyle answers with another nice jab and then a body shot. De Lima starting to pick up the pace and push forward. Kyle lands another jab. I'd love to see the statistic on how many jabs he's landed when this is all over. Three minutes left. De Lima lands a good leg kick. Kyle counters with a nice left hook to the head. De Lima really looks unable to find an answer for Kyle's length and range. It hasn't been pretty, but Kyle has put on an exhibition of jab throwing. Kyle gets a takedown with just under two minutes to go. Kyle is now in de Lima's guard and looking to rain down some ground-and-pound. Kyle finishes the round on top and in control. 10-9 for Kyle.

Final result: Kyle via unanimous decision

-end-

Rafael Cavalcante
 vs.
Yoel Romero

Round one: Romero dancing around a bit. Cavalcante looking to find the distance. Romero fakes to rush in a few times but stays at bay. Fans start to voice their dismay. Romero goes for flying front kick but misses badly. Cavalcante comes in with a combination of punches but nothing lands. Romero still dancing. Cavalcante swings wildly and misses with another punch. Cavalcante swings again and misses. Romero not making any real effort to engage. Very uneventful round thus far. Cavalcante throws big kick but misses again. It takes two to tango and Romero doesn't appear interested. Cavalcante finally lands a good leg kick with about a minute to go. Dan Miragliotta pauses fight to warn Romero for not engaging. Romero seems unfazed, almost like he thinks it's a joke. Fans booing. I don't blame them. 10-9 round for Cavalcante just for trying to push the action.

Round two: Cavalcante lands leg kick to front leg right away, then a kick to the mid-section. Romero taunts Cavalcante (puzzlingly) then lands an accidental low kick. Cavalcante takes a minute then gets back to it. Cavalcante goes for big high kick but misses. Romero counters and tries to land a wild looping punch but misses as well. Romero stalking now and has Cavalcante against the fence. Romero is throwing everything he has at him. Punches, elbows and knees! Now we've got a fight! Romero has "Feijao" against the cage, pinned. Cavalcante looks a little gassed. Romero hasn't lost a step. Cavalcante lands another good kick to the body and, again, Romero lifts his arms as if to say he was not hurt. Romero now has Cavalcante against the fence again and is throwing combinations. Cavalcante is able to slip away more quickyl this time and avoids damage. One minute to go. Standstill again. Cavalcante lands a spinning backfist squarely then pounces on Romero! Miragliotta steps in right away to stop things. Romero is done "dancing with the stars" and is now just watching them dance around his head.

Final result: Cavalcante via TKO (strikes) at 4:51 of round two

-end-

Evangelista Santos
 vs.
Jordan Mein

Round one: Both fighters come out measured and cautious. Santos lands two nice leg kicks. Another leg kick. Mein needs to check these. See: Urijah Faber. Mein lands a nice couple of leg kicks of his own. Santos answers with another leg kicks that wobbles Mein a bit. Mein throws entire combination of punches that misses. Santos stalking and continuing to land leg kicks. Santos with a nice combination and lands a couple of punches. Round one has been chalk full of leg kicks from both guys. Mein is starting to favor his front leg. Santos lands another leg kick, this time to the back leg, knocking Mein to the ground. Mein pops back up but it's clear that those kicks are really hurting him. Santos switches it up with a nice body kick. Less than a minute left. Santos lands nice left hook to the body. 10-9 round for Santos.

Round two:
Santos is really getting everything into his leg kicks. I'm wincing every time I hear them "pop!" against Mein's legs. Mein is getting less and less behind his punches. It looks like he's having trouble planting. Santos is destroying Mein's legs with inside and outside kicks. Mein able to use his reach and finally lands a couple of decent punches. Three minutes to go in the round. Santos lands a nice jab. Santos looks confident. Mein looks unsure of what he wants to do. The kicks are effecting him. Santos throws spinning heel hook and misses badly. Santos with another leg kick and then another. Lots of punches being thrown but none are really connecting for either fighter. Mein lands a decent right cross. Santos with another leg kick. Santos goes for a head kick but Mein is able to defend. Kenny Rice is sure Mein got himself back in this fight with that round. I question if Kenny is watching this fight. 10-9 round for Santos.

Round three: Mein looks like he knows he needs to do something major to win this fight. He has a sense of urgency. Santos lands very nice head kick. Mein lands nice combination of punches and then again. Mein is starting to light Santos up. This would be quite a comeback. Mein is going to town with punches and elbows. That it. It's all over! After almost certainly losing the first two rounds, Mein finds a second wind and finishes "Cyborg" with strikes.

Final result: Jordan Mein via TKO (strikes) at 3:18 of round three

-end-

Alexis Davis
 vs
. Amanda Nunes

Round one: Amanda Nunes taking her time getting to the cage and using up a lot of energy. Clay Guida would be impressed. Will be interesting to see if that plays any factor. The fight may not take as long as it did for her to get to the stage of combat. Davis looks nervous. If she saw Nunes' last fight, there may be good reason. Nunes comes out like a hurricane of punches, landing the majority of her strikes on Davis' grill. After about thirty seconds of weathering the storm, Davis is able to tie her up against the fence. Davis transitioning looking for underhooks. Nunes gets space and looks to throw hands again. Davis has her tied up again, clearly not liking how the exchange is going. Nunes grabs a single leg and gets takedown. Nunes in side guard and has Davis against fence. Nunes landing some punches but nothing that looks damaging. Back on the feet. Fighters trade knees. Nunes with a nice leg kick. Back to the clinch. Nunes backs up and lands another right hand to the head. Good jab by Nunes, who has slowed, but is still landing effective strikes. One minute left. Tied up again. Davis doing good job of keep Nunes from working her stand-up game. Round ends tied up against the fence. Davis proving to be tougher than most gave her credit for. Still a 10-9 round for Nunes.

Round two:
Somehow in the scrum of round one, Nunes ended up with a big knot on her left forehead. Davis closes distance again and ties Nunes up. Nunes is looking frustrated now. Nunes gets successful takedown and is on top but backs away. Fighters scrambling and it's back to the fence. Ugly round so far, but it would appear as that's what Davis wants. Nunes is starting to play Davis' game. Davis is landing some good knees to the body in the clinch. Nunes is beginning to look like her will is breaking. Davis lands some good dirty boxing strikes. Two minutes left. Referee makes odd separation and Nunes lands a good strike after the break. Davis ties her up again immediately and lands subsequent knees to the body. Nunes gets takedown but Davis reverses right away and has top position. Davis lands a couple good strikes from the top. Davis takes her back with 1:38 left. She's softening her up with punches and looking for finish. The fight has been stopped due to strikes from Davis. This is a big upset. Great win for Alexis Davis.

Final result: Alexis Davis via TKO (strikes) at 4:53 of round two

-end-

Chris Mierzwiak
 vs.
Dominique Steele

Round one: Steele starts off mean-mugging Mierzwiak at the glove touch. Steele lands a good shot, Mierzwiak goes for takedown right away. Doesn't get the takedown at first but is able to eventually get his opponent down. Steele reverses. Mierzwiak works submission game from bottom. Nothing doing. Back on the feet. Back on the mat almost as soon. Nonstop transitioning. Steele lands a nice knee to the head. Mierzwiak goes for another takedown and Steele sprawls effectively. Some dirty boxing. Mierzwiak lands a couple damaging punches and Steele looks wobbled. Two minutes left and Mierzwiak has taken Steele down and has him in a body triangle. Mierzwiak looking for a rear naked choke. Steele is in trouble. One minute to go, same position. Steele trying to turn out of it but Mierzwiak controlling. Steele able to reverse and is in Mierzwiak's guard now. Back on the feet. Steele goes for another jump-knee but hits nothing but air. Ten seconds left, both fighters sucking wind big time. Very exciting first round. Tough to score. Probably a 10-9 round for Mierzwiak.

Round two:
Both fighters have slowed from the action in round one. Mierzwiak gets takedown but it's right back up instantly. Steele with the takedown and in Mierzwiak's guard. Steele is trying to soften him up with rib punches. Mierzwiak continuously trying to throw the legs up for submission attempts, very active from the bottom. Steele with a nasty knee to the ribs. Mierzwiak goes for another triangle, but Steele slips out. Steele has had top position for most of the round so far. Mierzwiak starting to turtle up a bit. Back on the feet. Steele barely misses with another flying knee attempt. Mierzwiak answers with an uppercut. Muay thai clinch for Steele, working knees and elbows. Steele lands a brutal elbow, Mierzwiak to the ground and looks hurt. Steele trying to implement the crucifix. He's raining down some vicious ground and pound. Thirty seconds left. Steele has Mierzwiak in bad shape but looks like he's not sure what to do. Mierzwiak somehow makes it out of the round. 10-9 round for Steele. Maybe 10-8.

Round three: Both fighters look totally gassed. Steele pushes Mierzwiak against the fence where they both battle for position. Off of the fence now. Bit of a stand still. Steele rushes in and gets the takedown. Steele is back in the guard of Mierzwiak and on top. Mierzwiak tries to escape out the back and then go for leg lock, but both are unsuccessful. Steele has his back now but again looks like he doesn't know what to do with it. Mierzwiak gets back ot his feet and the fight is up against the feet again. Steele with double-leg takedown. Two minutes left. Steele on top and Mierzwiak looks ready to quit. He's still throwing up submission attempts but half-heartedly. Somehow, Mierzwiak reverses and has Steele in a body triangle. Thirty seconds left. Looks like we're going to the judges. I'd call it another 10-9 round for Steele. Decent fight to open things up with.

Final result: Dominique Steele via unanimous decision

UFC wins again

Love him or hate him, Dana is putting on the biggest fights we want to see. I would much rather Reem fight Brock than stay in a tournament that is meaningless. You might get 1 or 2 other HW’s out of that tourney to join the UFC, the rest will need to find homes elsewhere.

That tournament seemed like it was going to give us the biggest fights in the HW division. Crazy how quickly that changed over the last 3 months. Now after only a little more than a month, some of the best fighters are already heading to the UFC, with more to follow soon.

I would take Sergei & Bigfoot and cut the rest of them.

Statistics show suicidal people are a hundred percent more likely to kill themselves.

You know, some days I forget that I have a memory.

I hate Josh Barnett.

But I would like to see him in the UFC if he was able to stay clean and stop cheating.

Well he has two more fights in SF to help clear his issues

And if he does I think the UFC may give Barnett a couple fights to prove himself in the UFC. Barnett vs Roy Nelson?

good matchup that could have happened years ago (in the right circumstances)

Mir has better standup now and endurance. I think Barnett would get on top eventually, but Mir wouldn’t be a fish out of water. Barnett wouldn’t finish him with strikes quickly so the ground battle would be great to see.

Not as excited for the tourny as I was when it started.

But these are still some awesome matches, and a lot of interesting fights style wise.

Agree entirely.

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses off my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

Zuffa should have some sort of countdown feature for this Grand Prix...

…gosh, make use of your expiring contract with Spike dagnamit!

Fedor "The Can Crusher" Emeilianko IS NOT THE BEST HW EVER , in fact he sucks! he has the most padded record in the history of any combat sport, scratch that in the history of any sport. He has not changed as a fighter , he is still just as good as he was then, only difference is he isn’t fighting freaks and nobodies, I , along with many others have been duped into believing he is great, when clearly he is NOT! -I hate you the Dragon...one day

Note to self: Harbor a grudge against guyverbob for hurting your feelings. It's on in this bitch!

Can we stop calling it a tournament? The champion is out, these are just HW fights, very poor ones.

by danago on Sep 10, 2011 7:58 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Just because the "Champ" who defended his title once in 2 years is out doesn't mean these HW fighters are poor.

All 4 of these fighters are talented. I’m not much of a fan of any of them but I can’t deny it.

Feeling a little crazy tonight.

Parlayed King Mo and Cormier for 400 to win 1109.70
Parlayed Healy and Palacio for 200 to win 620
Picked Kharitonov for 100 to win 250
This one really crazy but I picked Rockhold for 100 to win 350

Let me also say that I have done really well this year and have been playing with “the houses money” for the last eight months.

Rockhold is a crazy pick…should of just thrown your 100 on Souza and made a easy 20-30 bucks. Luke has not fought for a year and a half and though he has shown signs of potential he will be easily outclassed. Stranger things have happened but I would be shocked if Luke pulls it through. Picking Mo and Cormier is the only bet I like of those Adolf?

Really Jacare is landing the much more damaging strikes and is the only guy to have come close to finishing the fight, but I can see how you call it that way on volume but with the takedowns and damaging strikes I give it 29-28 the other way.

Yeah his hands were really low the last couple minutes of that fifth round…..fuck looks like Jac is losing his belt. I still think he will win out three rounds to two on the level of damage he did in two of the five rounds, he had Luke rocked in two rounds and took him down a few times which will cause the judges to give him three rounds imo….maybe not deservedly but he will win the fight, I think lol never can tell with MMA judges.

Follow my three rules

1. Only bet on fights when you have seen both guys in action.
2. Never bet on length/outcome of a fight. Never place an “X wins inside distance” or “Fight lasts more than two rounds” bet.
3. Never make a panic bet. If you lose a bet, you might feel the urge to bet big on a later fight. Ignore it.

Dude, in the last 5 years his only losses were to Cain, the current No 1 HW in the world, and a loss to Mir a week after Nog got out of the hospital from a wicked staph infection. He just KO’d a young, extremely athletic rising star who was on a 4-win streak (3KOs).

but shit, nobody’s chin is what Nog’s used to be. His chin is still comparable to most other fighters, it’s just not comparable to the granite he used to hang his teeth in. And he’s slowed down a bit, but I think he’s still a TOP 10 fighter and I don’t believe in putting fighters out to pasture as soon as they no longer seem able to challenge for the title. In that case, the entire MW and LHW divisions would have to retire, since none of them have any reasonable chance of beating Silva or Bones.

2006

I just seen it for the first time the other day, Nick showed amazing take down defense. I actually had Sherk winning round 1, Diaz winning round 2, and round 3 was a toss up, in my opinion. Nick stopped every one of Sherks takedowns…except 1 I think.

That was a time when Sherk was 31-2 and ten years older than Diaz who was 11-5 and 23 years old.

It impressed the hell out of me.

by makaveli158 on Sep 11, 2011 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, but Diaz had a rediculous reach advantage

and used every inch of it. Sherk still did amazingly well given the distance he had to cover in that fight. Had it not been for that one difference, Sherk would have dominated him. He was much faster and more powerful than Diaz.

exactly

In the Fedor match Silva’s game planning was simple, use his size to keep Fedor on the ground and avoid the big punches. Against an Olympic wrestler like Cormier the game plan would have been to keep the fight standing…but when Cormier proved to have gunpowder in his gloves, there was nowhere for Silva to hide.

And yes, he was too predictable on his feet. I’m not sure what happened, but ever since Rogers, Fedor has been fighting like he wanted to end it as quickly as possible. Against Cro Cop and the like, he was much more patient.

Personally I think he got a bit lazy on top

Not surprising considering that he stopped facing the elite when Pride went bust and has had arsekissers telling him how he’s the GOAT 24/7 because they wanted to leach off of his success and make money for themselves.

He was fantastic back in the day and made great fighters look ordinary at their own strengths (Big Nog, Cro Cop) but his speed and technique are gone and he’s a shadow of his former self. He should beat Monson but I don’t see Fedor ever being a top 10 level fighter again.

The best example considering they fought when RJJ was a beast

B Hop is one of the best brains and technicians remaining in boxing and it shows, RJJ physically faded and like Fedor the cracks begin to show. They’re more vulnerable and they can’t impose their will in certain ways.

Of course somebody like Bigfoor (or Antonio Tarver for RJJ) will quickly catch up with them once these changes happen. Add in the fact that Fedor always went for the kill and was mostly a smaller fighter.

honestly can't be bothered trying to justify myself but yeah.

want Manny to win, think Floyd is smart enough to adjust on his own, use his (slowly decreasing) speed and technique. Straight punches and the occasioinal clinch. Lots of frantic shoulder rolls and scurrying away from Manny’s onslaughts.

I'm hoping he makes it competitive

First time in a while that Mayweather’s fought someone who’s on the rise rather than in decline. His opposition has been better than Pacman’s lately. Floyd will probably take another decision but I think Ortiz will do better than many expect him to.

When Daley was fighting in a UFC Number 1 Contender match. And who else do you know that is on a 10 fight win streak with 9 finishes? Go back just a little bit more and Nick is 13-1 with 10 finishes.

That is impressive no matter who your opponents are. Diaz finishes fights.

There’s multiple theories/reasons why he never wanted to fight for Zuffa, and in Pride he didn’t have to and fought the best HWs of his time beating them at their own games often.

Despite his flaws (careless/relying on physical gifts more when they were sharper) he was amazing.

Sergei's good but was always going to be a horrible match-up for Barnett

Knew Barnett would easily make it to the finals. Cormier will be a tough opponent though he’s just as good if not better at wrestling and in my opinion has better striking though his cardio hasn’t been truly tested yet. Tough fight regardless and Josh will have to take it very seriously if he’s going to win this GP.

"What it means, and what it means for us, is the idea that anyone can fight anyone. ...Eventually everyone is going to fight everyone else. It's going to have to happen. It's inevitable. That's what the WAMMA belt stands for. It stands for the hope for the future that the best people in the world will meet the best people in the world without organizations, without contracts, without all this stuff getting in the way. That's why we hold the WAMMA belt in such importance. ... It stands for an idea. Not only for Fedor but for us."
-M-1 Global Evgeni Kogan on the importance of the WAMMA title

Oh, I'm a Sergei fan and a Fedor fan

I don’t give a shit how they look. It’s just that Sergei was much leaner and lighter on his feet back in PRIDE. He’s so slow and flatfooted now it’s embarrassing.

Instead of writing dumbass poems and sucking off JMMA fighters, i should instead recognized the greatness that is Anderson Silva. The Pride is by far the most knowledgeable commentator on this site and you should all bow before him

by Johnny WF on Sep 11, 2011 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions

They were both monsters in Pride

NO one ?’s that but they have done nothing to improve their skills to the newer generation of WELL ROUNDED MMA athletes

by OvaDwayneBowe on Sep 11, 2011 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

You dipshit that was an entire generation ago…..like I said you are a newb who was not watching MMA back then and have no clue what you are speaking about. Leave the MMA talk to grown men who know what they are talking about. Just STFU and quit embarrassing yourself dude.

by Modusopks on Sep 11, 2011 1:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Do you ever get the feeling that athletes from past generations influenced the athletes after them

Most fighters won’t evolve enough to keep up with the next generation because they have influences the evolution of the sport.

Play your part.

Yep, very well said GF no doubt you are right.

by Modusopks on Sep 11, 2011 1:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Fighters in MMA don't usually last long either (compared to most other sports).

8/10 years maybe? Real prime. (not counting anomalies; Hendo, Ando, Rampage).

by grapplefan on Sep 11, 2011 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Very true, MMA is a young mans sport for sure.

by Modusopks on Sep 11, 2011 1:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Well Modusopks

Grapplefan just said so eloquently the exact point I was trying to make thank grapplefan

by OvaDwayneBowe on Sep 11, 2011 1:30 AM EDT up reply actions

No I said if you read any of my post in reply

I do think Fedor was badass in 2003-4 but has not done anything to improve himself MMA-wise

by OvaDwayneBowe on Sep 11, 2011 1:44 AM EDT up reply actions

When and when

He is SOOOO obviously a 205er and he trained 2 times outside of his shitty Stary Oskol site (once with GG and once at AKA)

by OvaDwayneBowe on Sep 11, 2011 1:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh and to have such a shitty managment team as

M-1 running (or should I say ruining) his career that is truly improving himself MMA-wise

Finished the night $1150.00 ahead.

not my best night but 4 out of six is not that bad.

by Adolf Oliver Bush on Sep 11, 2011 1:06 AM EDT reply actions

That's not chump change.

How much did that cost you?

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."

AO Bush, post your picks man ;), I'd love to know why you picked Rockhold

I lost my 2 remaining parlays on Jacare (not that that was a bad bet on paper at all). Good betting anyway.

by grapplefan on Sep 11, 2011 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I had Luke too

Only straight such a good line hard not to take only put 25 on him at +275

by OvaDwayneBowe on Sep 11, 2011 1:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I'll be honest I've been betting for quite some time,

I’m up 7 grand this year. My sucsess has come from not falling for the bull shit hype. In all honesty, who has Jacare really beat? The fact of the matter is Rockhold is 7-1 and has never been out of the first round. With that being said, the real thought process I used was the fact that he trains at AKA. Say what you want to say, but that is by far one of the top 3 mma camps in the world. Last but not least I go by the odds more so then anything. Most times there is no money to be made in the favorates in this sport. It’s all about finding value in the lines. I know this might sound like a bunch of bull shit, but it’s worked out for me quite well thus far,

by Adolf Oliver Bush on Sep 11, 2011 1:27 AM EDT reply actions

You seem like you don't mind helping out

So i’ll ask, any quick advice about parlays you go for? Number of fights, do you bet opposites in different parlays?

by grapplefan on Sep 11, 2011 1:41 AM EDT up reply actions

so what do you have to do to get a clean KO? kill the guy?

every KO on these things is always listed as a TKO. idk why that bugs me hahah.

by AzCombat on Sep 11, 2011 2:03 AM EDT reply actions

Parleys are the Devil!

Tonight was the first time I did a parley bet in about 7 months. The only reason I did it is because the odds tonight were terrible. I will say that my personal best is an 8 fight parley. This spanned over 3 months worth of UFC cards. I bet 150 to win 2050. That was 2 years ago. I don’t advise parleying more then 2 fights though.

Hit me up if you have any more questions.

I’m just a normal guy that has been addicted to this sport for over a decade and figured it was about time I started making some my ppv money back.

Here is my “Gimmie” for the week for anyone who enjoys betting football as well.

I just placed a $500.00 bet on the Pittsburgh Steelers. at +1 1/2 VS the Ravens.

The odds makers in Vegas are clearly on a crack bindge so… It’s our duty to rob them blind!

by Adolf Oliver Bush on Sep 11, 2011 2:36 AM EDT reply actions

Why does it say in this write up that Silva was..

Stiff and Out Cold?? He was none of these, he flopped down on his back and then rolled about from side to side. None of these are ‘stiff’ or ‘out cold’. Over hype or what!
