The co-main event of UFC 135: "Jones vs. Rampage" on Sept. 24 in Denver, Colorado, just took a big hit.
That's because Diego Sanchez has suffered a broken hand and been forced to pull out of his scheduled bout against Matt Hughes just over two weeks from fight night. This according to UFC President Dana White who tweeted the following:
"Diego Sanchez broke his hand. Looking for a replacement for Hughes."
Sanchez had been riding a wave of momentum in the welterweight division after consecutive decision victories over Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann respectively helped erase a previous two fight losing streak.
"The Dream" recently revealed that he hit rock bottom after his loss to B.J. Penn in late 2009 before making his return to Team Greg Jackson. It appears he'll have to overcome yet another obstacle now.
Hughes, the former two-time UFC welterweight champion had his resurgent three fight winning streak snapped by B.J. Penn last November at UFC 123 via first round knockout in the final fight of their trilogy.
Would it even make sense for him to face a young gun in the division on short notice?
Who do you think can step up and take a fight with the former champion with only 19 days to prepare? Recently victorious Brian Ebersole's name has been thrown around. Are there any other opponents that make sense?
Sound off, Maniacs!
Update - 5:30 p.m.
Rising welterweight contender Johny Hendricks has asked for the fight on twitter:
What do you think?
