Cage fighting kids?
You can find them at the Greenlands Labour Club in Preston, United Kingdom, as young as eight, complete with buxom ring girls and 250+ adult spectators.
As always, I see a story like this and instinctively cringe. This time was no different. However, as always, once I started reading the details, it's never quite as bad as I thought.
Rosie Carter, from the Safechild children’s charity (via Telegraph.co.uk), does not agree:
"This is sick, absolutely disgraceful and I would call on social services to step in. I can't believe the parents are allowing their young children to participate in this barbarity."
Appalled doctors and child safety campaigners said the lack of headguards could cause brain injury or death and called for the ‘sick and disturbing' practice to be banned.
A spokesman for Lancashire Police said the force had "looked into this matter fully and there are no issues for us to pursue"
Once again, I for one, do not have a problem with kids training or even competing in some manner of MMA. Most of us fans know all the obvious responses to stories like these. My only question would be in the judgement of the venue, and if it makes sense to include children in an event that is designed for adults.

Whether these stories have any affect on the general public is debatable, but it still aggravates me when people are using terms such as "barbarity" in describing our sport.

I'd say its a standard overreaction from the ignorant masses
Granted these kids are quite young, ages 8 amd 9, but its seems like they are just grappling and doing jui jistu in a controlled environment with doctors and refs. There doesn’t appear to be much punching and kicking going on either, hardly looks like ultra dangerous cage fighting this article is making it out to be.

I get where you’re going but the instant reaction is going to be that these kids aren’t wearing gloves and the professionals do. If grown ass professional athletes in the peak of thier career wear safety equipment in the form of gloves than the kids absolutley have to. Weather striking is legal or not. How anybody could be so stupid to organize this and not even put on some sort of show for safety’s sake is amazing. It's about perception
Look it up if you don’t know what it means. When you get out of your parents basement you’re going to eventually realize people’s perception of things has a lot more to do with how things work than how things actually work. A lot of people want to cry about the legitimacy of MMA and doing this or that for the sport and grow the sport and a bunch of other cute cliches but then end up on the same side of the fence as the assholes holding the sport back. You don’t need any gear for a grappling match. The headline doesn’t say “grappling match” though, does it? It says “cage fighting” and no matter what you want to call it, kids should be wearing something protective inside the cgae even if it’s just for show. Take Strikeforce, for example, and the Shields/Diaz borthers/ Mayhem “fight.” How many articles has Mmamania written in the past 3 weeks mentioning that fight in an article about UFC on Fox and how bad that was for Strikeforce and NBC? It was a bullshit fight, but it changed people’s perception of the sport, holding back it’s growing legitimacy. It’s really kind of like a life lesson sort of thing, not exclusive to mma by any means. Once you’re thru with school and living in the real world you’ll eventually get it.

mma fans want blood they want brutal finishes they want elbows/knees to the face and they want it inside a chainlink fence. Critics hate all these things and will never learn to like them, these same critics don’t mind wrestling judo bjj karate tae kwon do or even boxing. As I live in Preston. The media has blown this so out of proportion. It was a great night, and I have no problem with watching kids grapple as my self did kickboxing from 6 yrs old and I loved performing in front of a crowd and showing off what i had trained and i think these kids did as well!

This non story was all over the 6 o'clock news last night
unbelievably its the lead story on bbc breakfast news this morning. MMA’s such a fringe sport in this country that we continue to get ignorant people leaping all over this like its some kind of “fight to the death” in front of a “baying mob”, SAD!
These kids were just no-gi wrestling, no strikes whatsoever, far less dangerous than rugby or karate and on a par with any judo class. Suddenly a cage is involved and it becomes “barbaric”. Fucking lazy sensationalist journalism at its worst!

The UFC really dropped the ball marketing MMA over here and the likes of UCMMA and it’s predecessor Cage Rage are perpetuating the underground cage fighting myth rather than trying to educate the masses about the sport.
When I was watching this joke of a story on the local news the first thing that I said was that if they were wearing gis and weren’t in a cage nobody would care. Maybe using the kids on a joint card with adults is a bit much and if there was any striking (which there wasn’t otherwise these idiots would have shown it) then they’d need protective gear just like any amateur fighters but other than that it just shows how little no-gi grappling and MMA is understood over here. Sad but it just sums up how poorly the sport is perceived over here.

But, for me personally? I would rather see these kids competing at events designed for the kids and their families. Similar to any other youth sport league. It’s not the end of the world or anything, but that’s just me. Granted, I have been to quite a few Pop Warner Football games (American Football for kids) in Miami, and it’s a pretty rough environment.

I know us here in America love to over react to things but where I live in Pasadena, California
We have commercials on our cable channels for children to join the MMA gym where they can meet new friends, exercise and learn discipline. This gym is for both adults and children but the commercial specifically caters to them and here no one bats an eye. I just cant phathom that type of reaction.

I like having little kids in the gym.
If I ever get lit up sparring I just go find one of those little fuckers and say something along the lines of “hey buddy you wanna move around and work some technique or anything.” Then after about a minute or minute and a half of letting this little shit work his moves…..BAM!!! I start teeing of on him. Since they are so short, a teep kick right to the face works good.

I don’t think you read the articles close enough.. it’s not an MMA fight, it’s simply a submission wrestling exhibition. No strikes at all. This is no different than thousands of other kids doing BJJ, wrestling, Judo, etc. It’s obviously just some irresponsible reporting from sensationalist media outlets, to create a story out of nothing.
I’ll agree though that the general setting of a cage, at an MMA event, is a bit unfortunate. But again: this is not MMA these kids are doing! It’s just a grappling contest, calm down people.

Have a few kids,
if my 6 year old came to me and wanted to start MMA I would be all in ASAP. I want my kid to be strong and confident not to mention the world is a dangerous place to send our kids and I want mine to be able to have the confidence and ability to make decisions and or defend themselves if they have to! my kids play hockey and honestly it stresses me out, Im scared one of them will get a broken neck from some idiot running them from behind. My nephew is 17 and plays high level JR A hockey which I can hardly waych because of how nasty it is out there, was almost killed last year. I dont believe MMA is nearly as dangerous, my buddy has a nephew that fights and Ive never been nervous watching him once even though one of his fights he tapped due to strikes, went and got cleaned up and then sat with us in the stand and drank for the rest of the event, wasnt hurt at all. MMA looks brutal and I iunderstand why people dont like it but when compared to other sports like hockey and football I do believe its safer and produces some really good people! I have no problem with kids learning at an early age.

I played hockey growing up and do some jiu-jitsu now. I think my likelihood of being seriously injured was way higher in a hockey game than any of the jiu-jitsu tournaments I’ve competed in, mind you it’s not exactly high-level tournaments I’ve been in. Still, feel way safer on the mats then in the rink.

I think its the presentation that makes this look bad.
The kids rolling out to the cage with a posse, wearing matching clothes, has his hood up and his head down like he is preparing to go to war. Gi-less. No protective gear. Inside a cage. Spectators. They probably had intro music too for fucks sake.
Nothing wrong with children grappling. Nothing wrong with competitive childrens grappling either. But these guys have this set up to match a UFC cage fight. That’s where they fucked up.
