UFC 135: Quinton Jackson says Jon Jones may be the future at light heavyweight, 'but I am the present'

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson isn't buying into the Jon Jones hype.
At least not yet.
Jackson has spent the last few months training with his Wolfslair teammates in Denver to help him acclimate to the change in altitude for his fight in the "Mile High City" against UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones at UFC 135 next week (September 24, 2011).
While "Rampage" believes Jon Jones has the potential to be great, he's not ready to crown the 23-year old king just yet and he says as much in his recent UFC 135 blog for Yahoo! Sports:
I know he's got some great skills and honestly I am impressed how fast he's learned - he is the future of the division in my opinion, but I am the present. Rampage is the present of the UFC light heavyweight division.
The former champion turned movie star even goes as far as to say that Bones' unpredictability has made him predictable:
Jon Jones does unpredictable things but, really, we've seen it now bro, so it is not unpredictable any more. We've seen the spinning elbow four or five times, Jon "Bones" Jones. We've all seen it. Maybe Jon Jones is going to get me with some knees - I expect that, it is a fight - but I am gonna get him with my hands, too. You look at those Bambi legs and wonder what happens when I hit him.
Jackson created some buzz for his upcoming title fight by stirring the pot, accusing Jon Jones of having a spy in his fight camp. This accusation led to all forms of speculation and the media ran wild with it. Perhaps it was all a mind game to try to get inside "Bones'" head.
If so, the ex-champion took it a step further today, attacking Jones because he feels the young star hasn't been able to handle the pressure when "everything doesn't go his way:"
Jon Jones has had everything in his career go right for him. The one time he got a little frustrated, with Hamill, he used an illegal technique that any fan in the stands could have told him was illegal, but he said he didn't know he couldn't do that. Come on, man. He just don't know what to do when things aren't going his way. He couldn't finish Hamill, so instead of trying something else he cheated and got disqualified.
Jackson made his mixed martial arts debut nearly 12 years ago in 1999 while "Bones" Jones was still in middle school. Unlike Jones, he's been in the cage with the absolute best in the world night in and night out including five current top seven ranked light heavyweights. If you remove Jackson, himself, from the list, "Rampage" will be checking off his last top dog with his fight against the champ next Saturday night.
Jon Jones has looked unstoppable thus far in his brief MMA career. He smashed his way to a title shot, handing fellow prospect Ryan Bader the first loss of his young career and then brutalized champion Mauricio Rua, the last man to ever stop Jackson, to win the belt this past March.
Jackson states that he's in the best shape of his career, but that's about as common a thing as you'll ever hear a fighter say in the lead-up to a big title fight.
Does he mean it this time?

He’s from my High School and I love his sense of humor.
I’ll be a Bones fan as soon as he moves to HW and starts fighting guys his own size. It’s just not a fair fight at LHW. He made Shogun look like a little kid trying to attack a grownup, like a chihuahua fighting a Doberman. I think both the HW and LHW divisions will be a lot more exciting when Bones moves up. LHW was a shark tank till Bones’ huge ass threw the force out of balance. The LHW title picture is a lot more interesting and competitive if he’s gone. And the HW division gets a whole lot more interesting with Bones in the mix. I think he can give JDS or Cain all they can handle and those are much more interesting fights for him than any at LHW where he is clowning a bunch of midgets. .

I’d be more interested in Bones vs Reem at HW than Cain as Johnny reminds me alot of Reem, long lanky LHW with a great skill set that hasnt grown into his body yet…especially if Reem comes in and decimates everyone. Be a great super fight for sure, and even at HW, pretty sure Bones would still have reach advantage on pretty much anyone, although it wouldnt be much over Ubereem’s 82.5(IIRC)

Reem is gonna get shown up in the UFC. His fight with Werdum showed us how well his striking prowess serves him when he has to watch out for TDs and the UFC HW divsion is full of massive grapplers with much better TDs than Werdum AND big power in their hands. I think heavy-handed wrestlers like Carwin, Cain, and Brock are gonna clown Reem. The best matchup for Reem is JDS or Congo.

Jones, Rampage or Shogun would probably beat about 80% of that division now. Mike Tyson was barely over the max UFC LHW weight when he was KO’ing everyone the hell out in the first round. Yes this too….Tyson had the second shortest reach in heavyweight history. Rocky Marciano’s 67" reach was 4 inches shorter than the next lowest with Mike Tyson and Floyd Patterson both having 71" reaches. And then Jack Sharkey’s 72" was the next lowest. Guess these guys were just cans.
I expect this to be Rampage in his best shape. He’s been living in the gym for a long time now, he knows what’s on the line, and the threat of being destroyed is very real. Win lose or draw, this will be Rampage at his best.

He may be taking Jones more seriously than other recent opponents, but you heard what he said about “Bones can’t bust a grape” and “He’s never been hit.” He really believes its just a matter of landing one big shot.
Even if Rampage was at his absolute best, I’m not sure he could handle the rediculous reach and leverage advantages that Bones is bringing. Plus, Bones has everything that has proved fatal to Rampage in the past, brutal knees & clinch (Wandy & Shogun), leg kicks from waaaaaay outside his reach (Forrest), and Greg Jackson’s gameplanning (Rashad). As much as I love Rampage, this is a worst-case-scenario for him.

and I want to see greatness. Jones has that chance, like Silva has done. Rampage isn’t getting any better. Plus people say he’s cocky but so what. Rampage calls Randy a decrepit old has been just because he picked against him and talked shit to Ken Flo for thinking Machida won their fight when Rampage thought the same after they fought. I like Rampage as a fighter but would rather see Jones take on everyone at LHW as the champ instead of Rampage cause it would be more likely to be exciting title fights.

There’s nothing wrong with good technical counter boxing/counter wrestling. Half of the shit Jones pulls wouldn’t be applicable without his height/reach.
True but I feel people give too many excuses on people winning with "reach"...
On the ground, a fighter with a long reach is in more danger with subs. Fighters play the hands their dealt with. Look at people having trouble trying to choke Sherk with that neck of his but yes, his reach does help him in the stand up no doubt. Obviously skill is there too like with Silva. Otherwise Grove and Struve would be badasses. lol

Yes, Jones is still quite a specimen. He’s an true athletic freak, but my point was just bringing up how he wouldn’t be Superman if he didn’t have that reach. 84 inch reach is insane. The truth will come out when he moves up to HW. Then, his reach won’t be as big of a factor, but he is probably going to be a lot more skilled than most HWs obviously.
He just does freak things, with that freak body. Not really trying to knock him, but just trying to be realistic.
I'm sure we're a few years away from him at HW...
and that’s assuming if he gets by everyone at LHW first. He can do all this and stay unbeaten than I think he’s the only guy currently fighting who would pass Anderson up as the GOAT. He has a long way to go of course but I like his potential. Losing to Rampage would end, or at least hold this up. Even if Rampage does win, he most likely won’t hold that belt for long. Plus, I want to see Jones vs Rashad and Machida and think they’d be alot better fights then their rematches with Page so I look at the bigger picture alot when I pick fights.

Chuck, Bone's reach is as much an advantage on the ground as on the feet.
His freaky long length is a huge advantage on the ground. And long limbs are an advantage in the submission game, not a disadvantage, not to mention what it allows him to do from within someone’s guard. He can sit up straight from within the guard and still pummel guys in the face with punches while being completely out of reach of their arms and leaning back out of danger of their triangles. He also has the ability to body-triangle ANYONE with those legs, even Roy Nelson. And the long legs give him an incredibly wide base on the ground that makes it nearly impossible to sweep or reverse him. Did you see how futile it was for Shogun to try and turn him over or grab his leg when he was under him. Bones was using great technique, but it was the extra length of his spread that made Shogun’s reversal attempts completely useless.

Well long limbs can be a hindrance on the ground too as it makes it easier for a top Sub guy to grab onto a limb an pull off the sub that much faster/easier, can be construed either way though..

and yet rashad suddenly took his physique to another level for the rampage fight and was basically the same size, now for the ortiz fight even bigger, faster, stronger.

That was the best Rashad I ever saw , against Rampage . He always was a bit of a slacker, and got by on natural ability, the threat of Rampage howling over his unconscious body finally got him to really dedicate himself.
And now I think Rashad will continue to come into fights at that level, he looked to be on that same level against Tito as well.
Rampage brought the best out of Rashad, similar to how Brock and Carwin have brought out the best of Mir. When your threat is maximal, your training will be as well. Then just learn to maintain that level of dedication and your good.

I walk up to Jones introduce myself and tell him that he is a tremendous talent that is gonna go extremely far in this sport (this was right before he really exploded onto the scene. I then procede to tell him that I thought the result of his Hamill fight was bullshit. As soon as those words left my mouth he does an about face and him and his brother walk away and chunk me the deuce. It was incredibally disrespectful. I just love how much confidence there is in Jones. Not that he isn’t a freak when it comes to skills, but he is young and his chances of making mistakes are there. If he makes a, mistake, Rampage has the resume to exploit that. I’m going to be honest, I think jones on his best day destroys rampage on his best day 10 out of 10, but I hope jones is humbled with a ass kicking.
