My interview with Carlos Condit

via cdn2.sbnation.com

He's one of the top MMA fighters in the game today. He is Carlos Condit and began his career when he 18. Carlos trains at the esteemed Jackson's Submission Fight Team out of Albuquerque, NM. He has an impressive record of 27-5. Condit has an agressive nature of fighting and a knack for finishing fights. In fact, his first 17 fights were all finished in the first round. Out of his 27 wins, only 1 has come by decision.

Carlos has accomplished a lot at the young age of 27. He was a runner-up at the Rumble on the Rock 8 man Welterweight Tournament in 2006. Condit next went on to fight for the WEC in 2007. At WEC 26, Carlos defeated John Alessio for the vacant WEC Welterweight Title. He would go on the defend the belt 3 times before the WEC welterweights were absorbed into the UFC.

Condit is 4-1 to date for his run in the UFC. His only loss was a very close decision to Martin Kampmann in his UFC debut in April 2009. A fight that could of went either way. His exciting fighting style has earned him 2 Knockout of the Night bonuses and 1 Fight of the Night bonus in those 5 fights. Carlos is next expected to face B.J. Penn at UFC 137 in October. It is beleived that a win over Penn will earn him a shot at the UFC Welterweight Title.

I was able to get in contact with Condit. He allowed me to briefly interview him via the internet. Carlos often connects with his fans on Twitter. His Twitter name is @CarlosCondit. He can also be reached at www.carloscondit.me. Carlos Condit t-shirts & merchandising is also available. Condit's Signature shirt from Headrush is available at many mma clothing sites across the net. I have included my questions for Carlos and his answers below.

Q : What influenced you to start training MMA?

CC: I was into martial arts froma young age, ninja turtles and JCVD movies and such. Saw ufc when I was 9 and was hooked.

Q : When was your first pro fight? Where?

CC: Did my first pro fight when I was 18 in Juarez, Mexico.

Q : How much time(per week) is dedicated to your training?

CC: When I'm in camp I train approx 3 hrs a day 5-6 days a week. Sometimes more.

Q : How do you keep yourself motivated?

CC: I absolutely love what I do, so I'm pretty motivated in general. But when I need a push, my family is a great source of inspiration.

Q : What is your "walk around" weight, say at the beginning of camp? and do you ever see yourself moving up to MW?

CC: I walk around @ around 190. WW is a perfect division for me, thats where I'll finish out my career.

Q : What do you enjoy doing in the rare moments away from training, fighting?

CC: When I have free time I hang out with my son, watch documentaries, go shooting, go fishing, read random stuff on wikipedia.

Q : If you defeat BJ and your next fight is NOT a title fight, is there anyone you'd like to fight? or a loss you'd like to avenge?

CC: If I beat BJ I will probably get a title shot. If for whatever reason I don't, I'd like to avenge my loss to Shields.

Wish there was more

And Hunting and fishing? I never took Condit for a country boy.

I should have learned from the fallen before me not to go up against him. NNR has no idea what’s in store for him, like me, he will join the beheaded on Cali’s Hit List.

Yeah he was very busy and I must of asked 4 or 5 times....

Before he finally agreed. So, I sent him 10 or 11 questions. He answered almost one. I wasnt about to bother him again & tell him he missed 1 or 2.

I apologize for the fanpost not looking that neat. I am new to this and couldnt figure how to space it out better and make it a little easier on the eyes.

effort is greatly appreciated

and i’d love to see him tool shields this time around. Regardless, i’d also like to see him fight nick diaz when he loses to penn and diaz loses to gsp

I want to see the loser of this fight, no matter who it is, fight Diaz after he gets crushed by Georges.

I think that Diaz would lose to either Condit or Penn, but stylistically both match ups seem very entertaining.

ok fightfan ty

awesome u could get that interview… consider asking the boys at mania if there’s any questions we would like to ask beforehand…. drew, ojr have done some in that manner, and a lot of us would be anticipating your interview… just a thought… nice job.

Yeah, I tried to contact them....

But I couldnt get in touch with anyone till I tried Geno Mrosko. but it was too late. I should of asked here if there were any questions any 1 else wanted me to ask. It was my first 1. I’ll definitely do better next time. I was just happy I got him to answer any questions. He is very busy, and I must iof asked him 5 times before he finally said ok. iNext time itt will definitely be easier on the eyes too. I had all kind of trouble with the software

I think that is why he didnt answer all of my questions

I sent him my questions and told him to answer whatever he is comfortable with. He knew I was making a post here at mania He did answer almost allof them. There was a couple he didnt. He may of just overlooked them. Im more than happy he spent tha time with me to answer all the ones he did.

I enjoy reading what interests other fighters & what they enjoy, etc, etc. I look forward to reaing yours on G-Sots

Yeah dude check it out it will be up hopefully over the next 24 hrs...

It was a great experience for me and i hope to follow up with more… The guys on here put some great ideas forward to ask him so it was very much a community effort but i had a great time putting it all together and pushing a few questions over the phone… he threatened to stop the interview at one point which was when i kinda felt like a journalist lol!

My biggest mistake, and i discussed this with DD after, was that i told him i would send him everything to read over and give the all clear before i post…

I sent it all to him a couple of weeks later(transcription took a while it was a 25 minute phone call and I have to work ya know?!) and he just never got back to me… We were liaising well up to that and then just cut me off… I figure since i had his permission leading up to it and he understood what the interview was for im just gonna go ahead and post it… nothing illegal there and i have the recording of him saying all good…

Only advice i can give – push a little more.. push to speak with him… dont be too much of a fan and push a couple of the hard questions ;)
