Tough day for Team Golden Glory.
Nearly a week after the world's largest fight promotion parted ways with Alistair Overeem, Martijn de Jong, head coach for the Dutch mixed martial arts gym, today (Aug. 3) tweeted that three more of his fighters have been released from Zuffa's Strikeforce and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) rosters.
Chief among them is former Strikeforce Women's 135-pound Champion Marloes Coenen (19-5), who was stripped of her title by Miesha Tate at last Saturday night's (July 30) Showtime event in Hoffman Estates, IL.
The departure of "Rumina," widely-considered one of the top female fighters in her weight class, is another crippling blow to the future of women's MMA, already on life-support since Zuffa's acquisition of Strikeforce.
Coenen has, and will likely continue, to pursue her career overseas.
Also getting the boot was Valentijn Overeem (29-26), who was pounded out by Chad Griggs at Strikeforce: "Overeem vs. Werdum" back on June 18. Losing "The Python" was considered a foregone conclusion once the "Demolition Man" skipped town, but his performance in Dallas against the "Grave Digger" certainly did him no favors.
Abu Dhabi grappling stud Jon Olav Einemo (6-2) was unsuccessful in his Octagon debut against Dave Herman at UFC 131 in Vancouver and won't be getting a chance to redeem himself after joining his Golden Glory brethren on the stateside chopping block.
UFC President Dana White shocked the MMA world back on March 12 when he revealed that Zuffa, parent company of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), was the proud new owner of what was widely considered the world's number two fight promotion.
While both Strikeforce and UFC continue to operate as separate entities, most of the MMA community expects Zuffa to eventually merge the brands much like it did with UFC and World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) earlier this year.
Until then, it's "business as usual."

but the whole team could have pulled some crap because allistair got cut, maybe they tried to play hardball with Zuffa getting Reem back in or just being difficult so Zuffa responded who knows

Seems to me like they were doing a damn good job of doing just that. SF has put on some really kickass cards in the last 2 years. WAY better and more stacked than anything we ever got from Affliction or Elite XC. Of course, they can’t do it every month like UFC, but they were putting out 3-4 cards a year that rivaled half the Zuffa cards. Take last night’s card. Helluva lot better main event and deeper card than Anderson/Okami…and it was on TV.

Masvidal could very well be one of the top guys at 155 right now…he went toe to toe with Daley at 170…I want to see how Noons matches up with guys like Pearson, Cole Miller, Dos Anjos, etc.

women’s professional team sports leagues are a running joke that lose money year in and year out here in the US. The WNBA is subsidized heavily by the NBA and is a money sink. Last I heard, the women’s pro soccer league here was scrapped. Golf and Tennis are fairly successful for the participants, but they also have 80+ years of history behind them.

You guys are exagerating this whole Golden Glory thing. It's quite clear why they all gut cut:
1. Coenen is coming off a shit fight and they are killing women’s MMA anyways. Dana will never get behind it.
2. Valentijn being cut needs no explanation, he sucks.
3. Yes, Einemo had agreat fight with Herman, but he is by no means a world beater, and lost to another UFC newcomer by TKO. I saw that fight as a gate fight and he didn’t make it.

Strikeforce is a lame duck
Dana is the puppet master, Coker just gives lip service. i don’t think he has much power left, and he shouldn’t. Zuffa owns them now. Even if they don’t dissolve Strikeforce completely, they will definitely poach all the talent from them. I like Coker a lot, think he did a hell of a job with strikeforce, but I doubt he has much say in the important roster decisions. One of the reasons strikeforce was able to get guys like Fedor, and Overeem was the flexibility they allotted in the contracts . To be fair they had too, because they haven’t had a roster or the money to put on enough fights for all these guys. Doubt you will ever see co-promotion, or a contract that allows fighters to fight in other promotions. New sheriff in town.
Coker will still have a job once SF is gone. He has a lot of good relationships and will be good for them when they go to Asia

GG tried to play hardball and they got fucked. Is anyone really surprised by any of this? Coenen has looked miserable in her last two performances and V Overeem is a joke. Einemo needs tune up fights outside of the UFC anyway, if he’s got anything left in him he’ll make it back regardless. There’s no reason to be upset by any of this. It just doesn’t make sense they cut Marloes just after this one non-consecutive loss but the performance Tate and Marloes put on was horrible. And it was a title fight. So this would make sense why Zuffa would cut the loser of the fight and eventually, slowly, phase out women’s mma. I always knew there was another reason why Gina was removed from the previous card she was suppose to be on. She’s never gonna fight again, under the Zuffa banner anyway.
Dude that was one of the better womans MMA fights I've seen in Strikeforce.

Business, management, etc. issues aside, this sport is about the athletes and if you cut the top talent consistently and trash the top fighters bc they’re not in your org. than this sport will remain in the shadow of more professional/mainstream sports. Not to mention that these “issues” that Dana or Zuffa has with these fighters are usually petty in the grand scheme of things (Overeem wants one more month to train, as previously agreed, AKA fighters momentarily cut bc they wouldn’t sign away their image for the toy line, etc.)
