Dana White non-commital on UFC television deal with FOX in U.S.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) could be coming to a FOX network near you.
Sports Business Journal today (Aug. 16, 2011) revealed the two sides are reportedly in agreement on a multi-year broadcast deal worth upwards of $90 million with four live events slated annually for the FOX Network.
In addition, weekly programming would find a home on the "FX" channel while Fuel TV would also receive its share of combat sports specials.
UFC President Dana White was asked about the particulars of today's news at the UFC 136 pre-fight press conference in Houston, Texas.
Here's what he said:
"Everyone is asking me to comment on the Sports Business Journal article. Well, there's a reason I haven't, just like I didn't comment on the Wall Street Journal article on us buying G4."
Heavy.com also brought word today that anonymous sources inside the FOX network are confirming the initial report, which is expected to last between seven or eight years.
Just last week, the world's largest fight promotion announced a distribution deal with FOX Sports Latin America that gives the cable television network the rights to air UFC content in 18 countries in Latin America.
Once again, no official confirmation has come from White or the UFC at this time, but keep it locked in to MMAmania.com for future updates to this story as they develop.

fingers crossed why?
"Some people were born with a silver spoon in there mouth mine was gold."-letter19
fingers crossed why?
Really, you have to ask why?
For one a major network deal = more free fights and most likely high profile main events…higher than Hardy vs lytle as an example.
2nd for MMA to gain popularity, more sponsors, more reconition such as more fighters like Silva and GSP getting major sponsors …etc
3rd and not last a big time network deal makes MMA more of a sport than a “human cock fight” that many anti MMA people try and make it.

We won't ever see the end of PPV. Look at boxing. The best fights are on HBO or PPV.

I just want it off of versus since I don't have that channel
So I kinda hope for this. Whether or not Fox is the right move, we’ll see.
You are prob like me and do not have the fuel channel either though man…lol. Sucks i will have to add that to my cable subscription though. Big things because MMA has only had a handful of events on public TV I guess it’s called, with the EliteXC and Strikeforce shows…..the UFC is going going to shut down anytime soon so this could mean huge things for the progress of MMA.
No, for some reason I actually have fuel lol
The UFC is gonna shut down soon? What do you mean by that?
Ah my fault that should read the ufc is not going to shut down soon meaning if they sign this fox deal we could be seeing primetime MMA on local channels for some time to come. That would be huge for MMA imo, it’s one thing to have it shown on spike or even espn but for it to be shown on one of the four local channels where it would reach millions upon millions of homes is huge for the acceptance and progression of MMA.
Oh ok, I thought I was gonna get some huge conspiracy theory on why they're goin' down lol
But yeah, i totally agree with you on that. I would love to have all the UFC and primetime stuff on Fox and even FX. That said, where does Fox rank when it comes to viewers now? i personally don’t watch that often anymore.
It's one of the top networks still, I think right now the top ranked shows it has is
Hells Kitchen, Family guy and so you think you can dance, but more than anything as far as sports goes they are up there as I know I see many NFL games on fox every year including last years Super Bowl.
Pretty Big i would say

I’m just always cautious when it comes to big news like this cause I want the UFC (and mma as a whole) to succeed. So here’s to hoping.

you get hdnet, fuel hd and versus hd. how can any mma fan not have hdnet?

Comcast doesn't offer HDnet on any platform in any region of the USi
As far as VS. Comcast owns that network, and since they now own NBC as well, it’s becoming NBC Sports channel pretty soon. DirecTV lost that network last year due to contract disputes with Comcast buy they eventually got it back after the outcry from fans of the channel

Comcast in the San Francisco area has had HDNet for over a year. You have to be careful what packages you get though, for some reason the Spanish Language channel pack drops FX and HDNet from the channel lineup. I found out when the idiots signed me up for that by accident.

Ah, you are correct Sir.
i work for Comcast and live up in Sacramento. i asked about about a year ago and my supervisor said that we just didnt carry it due to a contract issue with HDNet and DirecTV, so i dropped it. but it looks like they started offering it in 5 markets accross the US. Philidelphia, San Francisco, Detroit, Seattle and Portland. no word though on if it’ll expand or not. the rest of us will just have to wait

I hope they air actually PPV events...
Not just teh Ultimate fight nights liek on Spike. from what I read, the deal seem to be identical to SPIKE. they say they will air “unleashed”, Countdown shows, etc,etc on FX and up to 4 live events.
I just hope teh 4 live events are PPV quality, not the UK show with SPITTY we are accustomed.

I hope FOX uses
their own production team and announcers. Get real sports journalist on the announce team, reduce Rogans role and show Goldberg the back door. Get a production team that knows how to shoot a sporting even properly too. Has UFC ever done an exterior shot of a city? Interview a trainer or fighter before the fight? Also better promos and hype videos.

Why's that?
And do you know how hard that is? Honestly, how many sports broadcasters know mma as well as Rogan does? Heck, I bet Goldberg knows more about it than most!
Good Question
Because the person calling the action should not work for the promoter. If you watch Lampley and Merchant on HBO they can be brutally honest sometimes about fighter, fights and promoters. I have never seen that kind of honesty from Goldberg and Rogan because they work for the UFC. Lampley and Merchant dont work for Bob Arum, Don King or Golden Boy, they work for HBO. This is true for all sports except MMA and WWE. Simply put, I think you get more honest announcing that way.
but they will only be commentating on ufc fighters.....

If you're saying there's some bias to Rogan on not talking about other fighters
He’s always commented on fighters from outside the UFC. And to answer John Moss, that is a very good point but at this time I don’t think there are better commentators than what we have now. I think by the time rogan and Goldy would retire I could see people from the Fox broadcast. To prove my point, Gus Johnson officially works for Showtime not Strikeforce. So yeah…
Joe Rogan said having other MMA promotions was a good thing and Dana White suspended him. Rogan holds his tongue now for fear of his job.

dumb idea
The UFC team does a very good job. Probably a lot better than a network would do. Showtime controls production and it’s terrible. I’d take Rogan and Goldie over Ranallo, Gus Johnson, and Frank Shamrock. And who wants to see MORE interviews? Eff that. I’d rather see more fights. Plus you know any deal will involve UFC controlling everything except the broadcast signal and the commercial sponsors. I’m fine with that.
by d.rok on Aug 16, 2011 3:52 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
+1
when Showtime and CBS control the content, the broadcast team sucks ass and on CBS the camera work was total shit. UFC puts on a much smoother more professional production than anything the networks have come up with…by a mile! Who the hell cares about outside shots of the frakkin city??? What the hell does that have to do with the fights or the sport? If I want a freakin tour of Newark, I’ll watch the Travel Channel! Also, those locker-room interviews are shit and do nothing but disrupt the fighter’s pre-fight routine and mental preparation. UFC does it right, taping the interviews in advance and showing them at the beginning of the show instead of interupting the event in progress. Frankly, I’ve never seen any other sports coverage that I thought looked smoother and more professional than the way the UFC does things. Dana is 100% right for sticking to his guns on making sure he has total control over the content production.
"Who's da MASTA?!!!"
I hope FOX uses their own production team and announcers. Get real sports journalist on the announce team,
I hope your wrong, Rogan makes Showtimes announcers look like morons. Not to mention Dana has stated many times one of the blocks in gettting a network deal was the production rights to the UFC events……maybe they found middle ground and rogan and Golberg will be Fox employees
"I felt like I was getting raped by Freddy Mercury"-Tank on losing to Dan Severn
But they pale in comparison to HBO’s boxing announce team. Rogan would be an all right #3 guy but I feel you need better announcers and more of them. HBO has Lampley, Merchant, Stewart, Papa, and Kellerman, as well as former fighters like Jones, Lewis, and Foreman. Having that many is good because you can switch them around and not over expose them while giving each event its own personality. I’ve seen nearly every UFC PPV in the last 5 years and they look and feel the same.
you can't compare boxing to MMA boxing has been around for years
MMA is just getting started and very early in the sport, like rogan or not he is one of the few announcers that also has MMA knowlege.
"I felt like I was getting raped by Freddy Mercury"-Tank on losing to Dan Severn
True, but I still think they can do better. The fact that MMA is sort of new does not mean there aren’t plenty of intelligent candidates for an announce team. You got guys that could be great on MMA Live and Inside MMA. I would love to see Bas Rutten on the occasional UFC announce team.
Coture did a good job when he was on there. Need to bring him back
Drink til I'm full, Eat till I pass out.
Like they do in the NFL most of the announcers are ex NFL players or coach's
Randy would be a great idea for Fox to hire for the limited time they will need him and someone the UFC would agree could commentate a UFC event…hmmm…
I prefer Rogan over Bas though, I don’t know why but I don’t really care for Bas?
"I felt like I was getting raped by Freddy Mercury"-Tank on losing to Dan Severn
I love Bas. I like Rogan, too but I don't think he's as honest as he could be because of Uncle Dana.
Hell I liked Frank Mir as an announcer. And Brian Stann does a good job on ESPN and he’s been a guest host on Inside MMA as well. Also Kenflo.

Rutten sucks ass
All he does is talk about himself and what he did in similar situations. Then he recommends a liver kick every few minutes. And then he makes horrible predictions that are always opposite of what really happens. Like this:
Bas: Watch right here, he’s gonna go for the takedown for sure, thats what he needs to do. That’s what I told him to do before!
Quadros: Wow! Did you see that head kick!
Bas: Yup just like I said, he’s gonna have to kick him in the head for sure if he wants to win.

First Fight?
The first event should be a title fight. Nothing below Welterweight though. You need some of the bigger names in the sport. Not a St. Pierre fight though because you want a good fight. Depending on how some fights go I think good first main events could include: Sonnen vs Silva II, Silva vs Stann, Okami vs Stann, Evans vs Jones, Rampage vs Evans II, and possibly Velasquez vs Dos Santos if you got a good co-main event. Out of those I would think Evans vs Jones would be a perfect fit.
The UFC would NEVER take evans/jones off ppv.
They make way too much money off ppv and that fight would be huge. Same for any silva or gsp fight, page/evans 2, and cain/jds.

Well they put Rampage vs Henderson on basic cable. They realize that sometimes you have to spend money to make money. Putting Jones vs Evans on their first broadcast tv event would get them a lot of exposure and possibly take the sport to a new level of popularity. In the short term they would lose money, sure. But the long term benefits could be huge.
the ufc is a ppv company with a buisness strategy.........
a market on a channel like fox would have to be built, and from the money involved in the deal, which is not a great deal, i don’t think big events will be part of the deal.

Page/hendo was a long time ago and the ufc was still looking for alot of exposure...
Not to mention it was hendo’s first ufc fight and page was still new to the ufc. Having title fights on free tv only makes sense if they’re trying to build up a fighter(s) to get him more exposure, like cruz/johnson.
They wont take an established draw off ppv and put him on a free card when they can make alot more on ppv. It wouldn’t make sense with some of the fights you mentioned but I wouldn’t be suprised to see cruz, aldo, or even a flyweight title fight(when the division opens) on fox.

Outside of Lesnar PPV’s the PPV buyrate really hasn’t grown since then though. I don’t think the exposure has grown that much.
You need to check the stats my friend.
Last year was their best year ever by far and Lesnar was only on two of those cards. It doesnt matter even if the numbers havent grown since then, its their buisness model. They make a shit load of money off ppv and youre talking about taking possibly the biggest fight of the year off ppv. Won’t happen.

you might wanna check a fan post titled 'is the ufc still growing?'
‘cause your stats are bit off, ufc has gone stale. It’s not doing bad but it’s not getting any better either. Accoding to today’s news, spike cited stalement in growth as a reason not to continue with the ufc

My stats aren't off actually.
I was debating a lack of growth from hendo/page(2007) to now. I know all about the numbers this year and how they are down, though I do attribute that to injuries and bad cards. I said the numbers have gotten better since 2007, and they have, they did have their best year in 2010.
This doesn’t really matter but what do you think spike would say? I thought the ufc was negotiating with spike for a new deal. The fox deal is better anyways, it gets them on network tv. From everything I heard, the ufc was negotiating with multiple possible tv partners, including spike.

But, do your stats take out the Lesnar fights from the averages? Part of my point is, is that outside Lesnar the UFC has not grown much since 2006. I feel Lesnars popularity really come from his WWE fan base still and UFC does not get very much credit on his buyrates. Still the biggest non Brock Lesnar UFC buyrate is Liddell vs Ortiz 2 in 2006.
Why do you say they haven't grown since 2006?
That is ridiculous, just look at tuf show for one. Just look at the buyrates over the years since 2006. Im not debating brocks impact or his wee fans, everyone knows hes a huge draw. The ufc had their best year ever last year and brock fought twice. Their second best year was 2009 where brock fought only once. You bringing up chuck/tito 2 doesn’t mean they haven’t improved, that was a HUGE fight, although evans/page did come close to having better numbers. TUF helped the ufc grow by leaps and bounds, their exposure has grown greatly since ’06.

I didnt say it hasn't grown
I say it hasn’t grown much. I would think that the “worlds fastest growing sport” would be growing a little faster. UFC 61 was Tito vs Shamrock 2 with 775,000 buys. The rest of 2006 you have 3 PPVs 500,000 or above, one below 500,000 and Ortiz-Liddell 2 over 1 million. Contrast that to what has gone on so far this year you have 6 PPV’s under 500,000 buys and 2 abouve 500,000. If you only compare the last 6 PPVs of 2006 which is what I consider to be the breakout period with all the PPV’s so far this year the average of 2006 is actually higher. I believe the PPV’s later this year will be big though.
The problem is there is to many PPV's now compared to then
Add the total PPV by year and because of the quantity of PPV’s now to then I bet PPV per year is up big. The problem though now is the semi casual fans are picking and choosing what ones are worth it to rent or go to the bar and watch.

I didn't say this year, I said last year.
I know numbers are down this year due to injuries absolutely wrecking cards and like puckhead said their are alot more events now. Look at total ppv buys considering fans pick and choose like puckhead said. The ufc will do 15 events this year and if your info is correct they only did 6 in 2006. Like I said before their biggest years were 2010 and 2009, and the last events for this year should be huge. It has grown alot, I dont know why you cant see that, the ufc is on tuf season 14 now. Each episode usually has 1.5-2.0 million viewers. Add all the excess ppv’s, fight cards on cable, tuf, etc…and you can see growth. I dont know if its the fastest growing sport, but its doing well. Ive had enough on this topic though, good debate bro.

my bad, that's a very valid response
the ufc did grow from 2007 to today, count me in as one of the fans that came just some three or so years ago.
i do not know why spike cited ‘stale growth’ as reason, even if the ufc has hit a plateu, that’s a million viewers tunning in, i don’t think manswers can pull those numbers, i don’t believe much of spike’s fanbase will stick around after zuffa leaves.
i for once, am glad ufc got the network tv. It’s gonna be easier for me to catch the ‘free ppv’s & fight nights

Yeah, I definitely agree with you.
I believe spike definitely wanted the ufc back and theyre saying this to save face. And like you said, even if the ratings stay the same they will still be good. The ufc got a better opportunity elsewhere and took it, good for them. Spike obviously wanted them, they might even get a deal done with bellator.

That was an excellent objective article. Just because Dana White
and Mike Goldberg keep saying its the number one growing sport in the world doesn’t make it so. I remember a few years back when Nascar was going to be the next major sport up there with baseball and basketball (the NFL in the USA is untouchable right now). The point is that the UFC needs to constantly work at not fizzling out, as there seem to be some indications that MMA has plateaued right now.
The cards they put on Fox need to be stacked.
Just Do EEEET
Get it done Dana! Breathe some fresh air into this, give your fans the resurgence we have been waiting for. The UFC needs more fans. I don’t care that they haven’t been following from the beginning.
Get the deal done and put on the greatest MMA event the world has ever seen. Maybe a night of champions like what was done years ago.
I want 10 million to tune in because it is such an epic card that you would be a fool not to watch.
All the people saying they would never put a major fight on free tv isn’t reading into what little info we have. 90 million over 8 years. Fox is paying them to put on the greatest fights, not the fight nights.
Just dooo eeeet.
I hope it happens
with fox and fx but I have the fuel channel and they don’t have an HD signal.
