Shawn Tompkins dead at 37

Photo

Former professional fighter and renowned mixed martial arts trainer Shawn Tompkins has passed away today (Aug. 14, 2011) at the age of 37.

Tompkins is survived by Emilie Stout, sister of UFC lightweight Sam Stout, and is perhaps best known for working with UFC fighters Chris Horodecki, Mark Hominick, Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva, among others.

The Canadian combat guru got his start as assistant -- and eventual head coach -- of the Los Angeles Anacondas under the International Fight League (IFL) banner back in 2007.

Tompkins would spend two years as a trainer at Xtreme Couture before migrating to the TapouT Training Facility in late 2009.

Details on his passing are still pending and we will have more on this unfortunate news in just a bit.

actually his skills as a trainer were pretty average and rudimentary

But that does suck. Wonder what happened. He always seemed to have a severe raspiness to his voice.

RIP

Who the fuck are you?

A trainer thats worked with some of the best dies, and you talk down of him on a thread about his death??? I’m sure you’re an amazing trainer, asshole

Danago should be banned from mmamania

I'm an MMA expert.

First off. I’m not talking down about Shawn as a person, merely his coaching. Which is in fact average. Shawn was a guy who could either take a really crappy striker and make him average or take a really good striker and keep him sharp. He wasn’t anything close to being an Emmanuel Steward or Roger Mayweather level stand-up coach.

I’m not saying I don’t feel heartfelt sorrow for the guy. It sucks to die young. Someone just said something about him that just simply wasn’t true and I responded.

Just find some videos and watch his verbal cuing and his techniques

Then compare it some other coaches and you’ll see what I mean.

In fact how about you name me one (1) fighter he has coached, that didn’t already have good or great stand-up beforehand? Find me a fighter he took from being an abysmal striker and made him word class….

I’ll wait

I'm not judging anybody. I simply stating that his knowledge as a striking coach is pretty basic.

Funny fighters, writers, commentators all around say great things about him, but the expert says ehh…just wondering. I’ll wait fir your credentials.

Great trainer

Even though I’m just an amateur fighter, when I went to Xtreme Couture Shawn always took training me and helping me with my technique very seriously. Stand up guy who was always happy to help anyone, including nobodies like me. Unfortunate news.
