According to noted oddsmaker Nick Kalikas of BetOnFighting.com, it's none other than Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar. "The Answer" is the -130 favorite heading into his UFC 136 showdown in Houston, Texas against Gray Maynard on Oct. 8.
"The Bully" stands as the slight underdog at +100.
Kalikas released the odds to MMAmania.com today (the line will likely be coming out sometime this afternoon) and explained what they mean:
Similar to the last line before the fight was postponed. Close to a pick'em fight with a slight lean towards Edgar going in. Should be another highly competitive battle, which the opening odds indicate. Based on the opening odds, Edgar is about a 57-percent favorite to retain his lightweight championship.
The lines will shift and move as the betting dictates, of course, but the consensus opinion seems to be that they'll hold steady right around where they are now.
Surprised Edgar opened as the slight favorite? Should Maynard be getting a little bit more love here? Or is this right in line with what it should be?
By the time these two finally make their way to "Space City" to square off once again, it will be the third time they will have done so, having met twice before.
The first fight took place back in April 2008, which Maynard won rather convincingly after three-rounds of mostly uneventful competition.
The rematch, however, couldn't have been more scintillating.
The two went at it at the annual New Year's Day event on Jan. 1 at UFC 125 and put on one of the best fights of the calendar year, battling back and forth in a war of attrition that ended in an unsatisfying draw.
If the judges couldn't decide who won that meeting, why would the oddsmakers be able to favor one or the other in the trilogy bout?
Perhaps that's why it's essentially a pick 'em.
We're still a few months away from fight time, Maniacs, but who do you like for your money and who ya' got straight up?
