Skill + luck = opportunity.
That's what was given to Charlie Brenneman when he hung around long enough to take Nate Marquardt's spot at the UFC on Versus 4 event when "The Great" was cut from the promotion thanks to elevated levels of testosterone.
If that wasn't enough, "The Spaniard" went out and pushed Rick Story to his limits, out-working him and grappling his way to a three-round unanimous decision win.
What a difference a day makes.
For his troubles, Brenneman has been awarded with a shot up the rankings and a much bigger match-up, as he will take on Anthony Johnson at UFC on Versus 6, an event that will go down in Oct., although a date has yet to be nailed down, according to the promotion.
Let's get ready to "rumble."
Johnson was last seen breaking Seattle's heart when he abandoned his stand-and-bang style in favor of a wrestling based approach that he used to dominate Dan Hardy at Fight Night 24.
It may not have been pretty, and it may have made him a liar for hyping the fight by claiming he was going to take "The Outlaw's" head off, but a win is a win is a win.
And he badly needed it, seeing as he had been out for 16 months and hadn't actually won a fight for 17.
Brenneman may be viewed as a slight step down, at least in name value, but he'll be just as tough and gritty as Hardy was.
UFC on Versus 6 will apparently go down in Oct. 2011, adding a third fight card to an already stacked month that will feature UFC 136: "Edgar vs. Maynard 3" on Oct. 8 and UFC 137: "St. Pierre vs. Diaz" on Oct. 29.
Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this third event in October.
