Two semifinalists from season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) and Team Lesnar teammates, Chuck O'Neil and Chris Cope, squared off tonight (June 4, 2011) in the opening bout of the main card on Spike TV.
Both fighters built reputations on the show as guys who fought on pure heart rather than rely on technique.
O'Neil showed up hoping for a brawl, but Cope dominated him from start to finish with better all-around skills. Neither fighter ever threatened a finish, but O'Neil was constantly on the defensive, while "C-Murder" pushed the pace.
It wasn't the prettiest fight, but Cope did more than enough to win.
The fans in the audience seemed to enjoy Cope's Rick Flair impression, repeatedly showing "Whoo!" throughout the match to cheer him on.
Cope pressed forward with constant aggression, landing with a wide array of strikes, including Superman punches, leg, body and head kicks.
Thankfully, at least, neither man gassed like the TUF fighters on the undercard, but overall, this wasn't exactly a fight that had the crowd on the edge of their seats.
To Cope's credit, he continues to defy the odds. It'll be interesting to see who he's matched up with next in welterweight division.
