You can't always get what you want.
Former multiple promotion champion Jake Shields recently cast his line, fishing for a fight against B.J. Penn for his first fight inside the Octagon since his unanimous decision defeat against Georges St. Pierre this past April.
Unfortunately, he hit a snag and will not be going head on against "The Prodigy."
Instead, he's reeled in a "Juggernaut," as MMAFighting.com brings word that Shields will take on Jake Ellenberger later this year, likely at UFC 138 on Nov. 19 in San Jose.
This will mark the first time Shields will enter a fight coming off a loss since Nov. 2005 and he's drawn one hell of a test in his return fight.
Rick Story has garnered a reputation as the man to call if you need a short notice replacement for a tough fight; however, Jake Ellenberger has been that guy for a while now.
Despite his propensity for taking difficult tests whenever necessary, the collegiate champion wrestler has amassed an impressive 4-1 record in the UFC, with his only defeat coming in his debut.
Even that loss was an extremely close split decision defeat to Carlos Condit, who is currently knocking on the door to a title shot of his own.
A win over former championship challenger Jake Shields would go a long way in putting Ellenberger over the top. But can he do it?
Stay tuned.
UFC 138 is unofficial at this time but is expected for Nov. 19 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. Tentative plans have Cain Velasquez making his first defense of his heavyweight title against recently crowned number one contender Junior dos Santos.
Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for further updates to this still-developing fight card.
