Most of the Monday morning black belts are still talking about the heavyweight action that took place at UFC 131 last Saturday night in Vancouver. Well fellow Maniacs, I'm here with a "Grim" reminder that another batch of 265-pounders are set to do battle this weekend in Dallas.
The second leg of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament will get underway on June 18 from the American Airlines Center and will include a titanic tilt between former PRIDE star Josh Barnett taking on the heavy-handed Brett Rogers.
Barnett's experience and grappling credentials have made him the odds-on favorite at -340.
Of course anything can happen in the sport of mixed martial arts, especially when you can hit as hard as Rogers does. Nevertheless, the former tire mechanic is a +260 underdog.
Are the oddsmakers calling it like they see it? Or playing it safe? Take a look at how these two heavyweights stack up after the jump and decide for yourself.
265 lbs.: Josh "The Babyface Assassin" Barnett (29-5) vs. Brett "The Grim" Rogers (11-2)
Backgrounds (last five fights):
Barnett:
Record: 5-0
Notable wins: Smashed a Brazilian roadblock named Geronimo Sumthin'erother and subbed a kickboxer
Notable losses: Hasn't been defeated since Big Nog decisioned him back in 2006
Strengths: One of the division's best grapplers, experienced, knockout power
Weaknesses: Hasn't competed in nearly a year, sounds like he may be overlooking Rogers
Rogers:
Record: 3-2
Notable wins: Embarrassed Andrei Arlovski, nearly embarrassed himself against Ruben Villareal
Notable losses: Consecutive drubbings to Fedor and the Reem
Strengths: Crazy power, underrated ground game, aggressive
Weaknesses: Hasn't looked good since putting "The Pitbull" to sleep
Josh Barnett (-340) vs. Brett Rogers (+260) at Strikeforce: "Overeem vs. Werdum." Who ya' got and why?
