Let's go to the video tape: Jake Shields pokes Georges St. Pierre in the eye during their UFC 129 welterweight title fight on April 30, 2011. Quite a few folks thought a jab is what caused the damage to the French-Canadian's eye. Does this film convince you otherwise?

not clear enough
definitely could be what did it though, for sure
Like mothafuck all y'all, Mr. Mike Tyson flow, uppercut all y'all, step into my ring bitches, ding ding bitches, click clack pow pow bing bing bitches
Not clear enough?
You have got to be kidding.I’m going to go bach and watch it again but the way his eye looked I knew it had to be a poke. The judges suck too.48-47? No way GSP won every round.
I knew it was a poke from the word go.
Jake can’t hurt a fetus with his punches.

But before someone pisses and moans......
I don’t think it was intentional. Shit happens.

Exactly but...
why in the hell would you throw your hand out like that.Good way to get a finger broke.
I actually thought it may have been to clinch, but who knows.
Jake’s stand up is so bad it is hard to say what he was thinking. I counted 2 ties where it appeared he just walked toward GSP with his hand straight out to strangle him.

looked like he poked him
but the replay of the punch to the eye resulted in GSP wincing right away. I think he poked GSP here, but this is not what did the damage
I disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it

hey man, tell matt thanks for ruining gsp!
i knew well before hand the result, i think we all did but deep inside i had some hope that gsp would actually want it this time, turns out he didn’t.
matt broke him, so not cool
i see herb dean watching very closely. he has the best view. why did he not take a point away if it was so blatant?
looks like a bitch slap to me. case closed.
Jon " Bones " Jones new light heavyweight champion. Even if Jones got struck flush in the face he would recover and defeat whoever is in front of him. I told everyone the fight would be easy. Almost felt sorry for Rua. Anderson Silva would never fight "Bones". He is too scared to fight the real P4P champion. Nick Diaz is near the peak of his career. 2 more fights and then he fights for UFC Glory. The Wolfman. The most popular man on Mania and the Elder Statesman on all things MMA.

Zapruder was here.
But that looks more likely to cause an eye injury than the jab they kept showing.
"Why am I here? Why does my mind have wings? Why do blue midgets hit me with fish?!" - The Tick
It was a legit jab that caused it. It was fair and square straight into his eye ball. It may have scratched as well as bruised but it was clear as day.
Don’t think there’s any controversey in this one, just a straight punch that was nicely thrown and not picked up on in time by gsp. All in all it doesn’t matter because gsp slogged out another win on a night that didn’t go his way. It was not a great night for the fans, though i still enjoyed it, but i think gsp will be quietly happy with his ability to escape with a win fighting half a fight with one eye.
hominik did much better with his one eye even if he lost. he tried to finish aldo with one eye and almost did it.
i want to see some medical report that says he has a scratched eyeball or something. gsp just proved again why he is the most boring and unentertaining ufc champion we have today.

gsp doesn’t really bore me all that much as to some guys, even on the ground he tries to do things, i mean he’s no shogun or aldo but everybody has boring fights and every good fight has boring moments it happens. anderson silva even has boring ass fights
Anderson is much more entertaining and KOs recent champions in the division above him
TO be honest after the GSP / Alves fight, I was still a massive fan and thought he fought a brilliant fight. Hindsight always changes things and I guess there are a lot of people here that will disagree with that.
After that I have noticed a difference in his performances. He’s one fighter that’s under the most pressure in the UFC IMO, major sponsorship, Canadian sportsperson of the year, UFC posterboy, the man to Canada what they wish Bisping was to the UK. I’d hate to be in a situation where I couldn’t lose, maybe Georges thrives on that because of his legacy though so I don’t know.
Joe Rogan said it was a jab that caused it so it must be true right?

convinced NO
if you look at the video his eye is already swollen before the “poke”
I don't think so
You must have Superman eyes.I can’t see swelling.
GSP got eye poked, but unfortunately that's what happens
Like when Randy got cut on the inside of his eye lid by Belfort and the fight was considered a TKO 49 seconds into the fight.
Sucks that GSP got caught with a poke to the eye; it was during the round when Jackson told GSP to knock Shields out too.

Proof or it never happened! ;)

Shit Happens!
Its happened so many times in the past and will continue, the fingers are exposed! I seriously doubt he did it on purpose. GSP won, eye scratch or not, I think it would have been more lopsided but same result: GSP handling Shields.

Bottom line is, I called it
and I will keep saying it: this is the beginning of the destruction of Cesar Gracie’s camp. First Shields and Nate lose in the same night and now they’re talking about having GSP smash NICK’S FACE IN. Nick is like a scarecrow. Haaaa! would love to see that happen. Please!

and 4 Zahabi fighters won!
I won’t hate the Gracie fighters though, and Jake continues to prove he is high level.

He should have put more vaseline on it….
nice open hand slap punch
hilarious. why would you even throw anything with your hand completely open?
He called Daley a ’’dirty’’ fighter look at him throwing a jab with all of his fingers completely stretched out.

I doubt it was intentional......
But regardless, why are open handed strikes even allowed? I know they need to wear gloves to grapple, but when throwing punches they should be penalized for throwing open handed stikes. It would prevent these stupid eye pokes…………
Duece said "Change your sig", so I did...........again.
Well of course it is going to look like a poke here
This video is edited to look like a poke. The video is in super slow motion and only one shot is shown in the clip. This essentially take it out of context. Show it in normal motion and add in a flurry and it will look quite normal probably. Jake threw over 230 punches in this fight, god forbid he throw a quick jab that hits GSP in the eye, its a fight people. Shields doesn’t even have a reputation as a dirty fighter. Jake said in the post fight press conference he didn’t even know GSP was blind outta his left eye, he just “seen it swell up”. No way it was intentional, period. This better not turn into some “Eye Poke-Gate” bullshit. This video isn’t even conclusive it caused the eye swelling, its blurry as shit.
On a second look,
the last second of the video, which is in normal motion, appears to me like Jake may even have been going in for a clinch but hesitated as GSP was countering. Remember this is a 20 second super slow-mo clip, in real time this whole thing happened in probably a blink of an eye (no pun intended). No way this was intentional.

I don’t think anyone thinks it was intentional…it’s unfortunate. I don’t think Jake is a dirty fighter, these things happen in MMA.

ITS THE WRONG EYE PEOPLE, HE HURT HIS LEFT
why is everyone saying “i called it” and “i knew it” when this video shows georges taking a shot to his right eye which was FINE afterwards…? lmao.. his left eye is the fucked up one, this video doesnt show his left eye being touched.
bro
u can clearly see gsps left eye wincing right after the fingers go in..
its one thing to call it how you see it, its another thing to be dedicated to hating on gsp..
no one is saying that the eye poke was intentional on jakes part, it just happened fast..
props to gsp for sticking to his gameplan, now lets see GSP v. diaz or silva..
supporter of all real fighters with much heart
The fingers go into the eye that is on the right hand side of the screen
In reality, that is his left eye. Its like a looking at a reflection in a mirror. The left eye is on the right side. You seemed pretty confident though. GOOD JOB!!
If you hold you hands in front of you, the pointer finger and thumb make an ‘L’ on the left hand…that’s how my nephew remembers which is left and which is right, but then again he’s 4!!!
