The co-main event of Strikeforce: "Feijao vs. Henderson" from Columbus, Ohio, between Champion Marloes Coenen and challenger Liz Carmouche is in the books.
And it was a doozy.
Women's MMA doesn't exactly have a great reputation but these two ladies went out and went to war with Coenen getting dominated by the much smaller Carmouche before a hail mary fourth-round triangle choke saved the day and her championship belt.
It was an impressive showing from Carmouche, a freshman in college, as Mauro Ranallo let us know during the broadcast.
For three rounds, she was taking the champion to school. Alas, the student could not defeat the master.
Carmouche was classy in defeat, saying she knows she has plenty of room to improve.
As far as I can see, her submission defense might be it. Coenen admitted herself that she got her ass kicked. The opening round saw very little action and the boo birds were out in force. But that was mostly a set-up to what was to come.
In the next two rounds, Carmouche absolutely dominated the champ, taking her down, passing to mount and landing blow after blow after blow.
In fact, by the end of the fight, Compustrike pegged Liz as landing 221 of 352 strikes.
Whew.
The champion may remain the same but if nothing else, a potential star may have been born with Carmouche's performance tonight.
