Two weeks notice against a grizzled Octagon veteran?
Didn't seem to be much of a problem for incoming middleweight prospect Chris Weidman, who outpointed Alessio Sakara in his promotion debut at UFC on Versus 3 earlier tonight (March 3) at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
Weidman, who cut his teeth in the ranks of Lou Neglia's Ring of Combat (ROC) promotion in Atlantic City, New Jersey, picked up right where he left off last December, pushing his record to 5-0 with an impressive combination of striking, takedowns and grappling.
"Legionarius" did an admirable job of keeping himself off the mat against the former collegiate phenom, but a gushing head wound suffered early in round two seemed to drain him of his defensive capabilities.
And in spite of a gutsy ability to weather the storm, the Italian stallion was just unable to stop the takedown and spent a majority of rounds two and three getting beaten up on the ground.
The loss was his first since winning three consecutive fights dating back to late 2008, so there's little doubt in this fan's mind that Sakara lives to fight another day.
Chris Weidman on the other hand has quickly labeled himself as one to watch within the promotion's stacked 185-pound division.
