Pic: Dan Hardy visits the grave of Bruce Lee before his showdown with Anthony Johnson in the UFC Fight Night 24: "Nogueira vs. Davis" co-main event, which is scheduled to take place at the KeyArena in Seattle, Wash., on March 26. Lee -- "the most influential martial artist of modern times" -- is buried alongside his son, Brandon, at Lakeview cemetery. Lee died from acute cerebral edema in 1973. He was just 32 years old.

Like all due respect to Father and Son Lee

they are not worth crying over unless family. Maybe Hardy sees Bruce Lee as his reason for getting into mma? and then again its a pretty emotional sight to see father-son buried beside one another

Idiots

Both men died well before their time and, especially with Bruce Lee, had so much more to offer the world. Bruce Lee’s death was a tremendous loss, particularly the martial arts community, therefore, for someone who has dedicated his entire life to something for which he feels he owes some gratitude to someone else’s contribution to get emotional is not only perfectly normal but commendable in my opinion. Notwithstanding, both men died young and tragically, so that in and of itself is something that would be perfectly normal to get emotional about. You both ignorant and mildly retarded.

no boom, you're mawkish and a little girl

it is not perfectly normal to cry at the grave of someone with no relation to you at all unless you’re the most girlie of girls and cry at the notebook and have a period.

if you’re a man you’re only allowed to cry once, and that’s a parent’s funeral. i’ll let you pick which parent you can cry for but only once

seriously, crying at the grave of a guy whose movies you like…that’s comendable? and people who have a realistic detachment from these things which enable them to be a functional humans are idiots? you must be a puddle of piss and tears whenever you see the news

Thanks

Thanks for the words of wisdom but what you just said makes absolutely no sense. Look tough guy, all I am saying is that it is ok for this guy to cry at someone’s grave who died tragically and made a tremendous impression on his life. It’s ok. It really is. And, you sound like such a dumbass for suggesting that Bruce Lee’s influence is limited to his movies. The guy was much more than just a movie star, FYI.

Further, you just sound like an insecure, scared little bitch with when you start barking about how people who cry are pussies. You my friend are the real pussy. It doesn’t make you any tougher just because you talk about how tough you are because you don’t cry. Based on your argument, soldiers who cry at the feet of the friends who are shot in combat are pussies. Husbands who cry at the hospital beds of their wives who just died of cancer are pussies.

In reality, you are the pussy. Stop being such a scared little bitch afraid to come out of his shell for fear that someone might find out something about him that he is keeping tucked away. I’m on to you man. And I got news for you, if I can see it just from your lame ass post here, so is everyone else. Jigs up “Sir.tickleberry”! Haha, sweet name by the way. Loser.

Interesting post. Let me add my 2 cents since you seem to be implying too much here :

Some posters on this thread – “Hey, Bruce Lee was a badass martial artist and his movies were awesome but why is Dan Hardy crying at his grave? He is too young to have known Bruce personally and is a complete stranger. ???”

Boom – " Bruce Lee was an inspiration. Let me post unrealistic comparisons with husbands/wives, soldiers/friends with Lee and young strangers born decades after his death. Anybody who disagrees with me is a (insert insult)!!!! "

Seriously, just relax.

well he cry once was an obvious exageration. and most of my comment was tongue in cheek

but i believe in the setment of it. as keith richards said when half of england was in the streets crying and the media went mad. when asked how he felt about the death of princess diana he replied “i never knew the chick”

it’s ok to cry over the grave of someone IF they have a direct influence in your life.as in, THEY WERE IN IT. a film star, who died before you were born is not grieving over a friend or loved one. to leap from bruce lee to a fallen friend or a sick wife is ridiculous. bruce lee’s influence isn’t limited to his movies as nether is james dean or marylin monroe. it’s far from a TREMENDOUS impression on his life. his family, his teachers, the people he loved, yes. films he likes? no

in reality, you have lost your grip on it, you think it’s normal and comendable to turn into a blubbering mess over something or someone you did not know. it is not comendable, oprah. it’s mawkish, it’s sugary nonsense.

and before you make the next huge leap, a war memorial and being solemn around it is not the same thing as not watering the flowers on bruce lee’s grave

to be honest i agree with him

IF you believe in god what else is it? if god create all, does all. your god did that. in olden times it would be an act of god, now christians say it’s a “natural dister” that’s blasphemous, that’s science, that’s our term! god did it, your god you ove killed 15,000 japanese because they eat a lot of shellfish

i also think "christian aid is heresey. who are they to intefere with gods plans of death, distruction and disease?…may they all burn in hell they think they’re bigger than him

no one believes in god these days, they just pick and choose from the bible what ever suits their own hang ups and biggotry so they can wrap it up as righteousness instead of nonesense or hatred

god killed the japanse and people are up in arms because glenn beck pointed out that their god is evil

i of course do not believe in god. so i know it was the plates under the ocean moving on our ever changing planet that was formed over 6 billion years ago by cosmic cause and effect

Hmmm, while the "bearded white man" in heaven idea

Is not something I believe in either, I accept that there are things that I cannot and will not ever be able to explain.

As someone who studied science extensively, I should say beware, because science is trying to set itself up as a new religion providing answers it certainly does not have or fully comprehend.

I like Einstein and Eastern philosophy which points to an energy in the universe that we are all a part of, and perhaps that is what “god” is, a collective consciousness we all belong to.

Anyways, sorry for the philosophy, because I agree religion is a tool for corruption, and has been for a long time, but I also believe that this world is too complex to have just occurred “by accident”.

by judomania on Mar 25, 2011 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions

it didn't occur by accident

that’s what religious people say before they start wafflingon about monkeysand bukets of spare parts being rattled about. it was cause and effect. a progression not accident.

science at least has the burden of proof on itside. mybe it’s wrong some times. but it’s atttude very much is “prove it”. a much healthy way to view things than “don’t question it”

Sometimes I am God, if I say a man dies, he dies that same day.
Circa Regna Tonat

by sir.tickleberry on Mar 25, 2011 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with some of that.

But I am trying to convey that while science claims objectivity in it’s quest for proof, it rarely ever is. The one flaw with science is that it is practiced by humans who are by nature very subjective.

Some science has been vey good, while other has been very bad (see eugenics), but the reality is that we don’t have the answers.

I agree wholeheartedly with the fact that religion can breed fanaticism and being close-minded. No argument there. And I don’t believe in all the stories in the Bible either. But, that doesn’t disprove the existence of something that created the causality.

I dunno, it’s a conundrum no doubt. But being Canadian and having recently studied Aboriginal and Indigenous culture, I find it interesting that these people in many different parts of the world all had such a similar and noble understanding of the planet, and while they would battle other tribes, they were respectful of most living things.

by judomania on Mar 25, 2011 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

except buffalo which they'd mass heard of the edge of cliffs, human sacrifice and killing edangered animals which they stil do today fr no reaon other than "tradition"

pulling your snow mobile off the back of your 4×4, loading it up with deisel, downing some johnny walker(not a crak at alcoholism, just more on none traditional western things in general now being consumed) putting on your gortex clothing, pulling out a filtered malboro, riding out to a polar bear, shooting it with the rifle you just boughtwearing your camo hat then cutting it’s paws off with an old swordis not tradition…it’s you wanting to kill something beautiful you have no reason to and trying to justify it. you lost “tradition” when you poured diesel into your 4×4 and snow mobile.

science puts forward theories, theories to be tested, theories to be bettered, all aimed at getting a greater understanding. and it answers so many more questions than religion. with it’s many many glaring flaws which are tied up in “faith” don’t ask, whatever you do don’t use that free will and questioning ature we weregiven, you’ll go to hell if you use gods one great gift

and being unable to disprove somethin is not the sme thing as proof it is so. the burden of proof is on religion. much ofscience is accepted by fact by religions. it’s holy books an religion that bends towards science. not the other way around

Sometimes I am God, if I say a man dies, he dies that same day.

Your diesel story had me very confused.

Why not like diesel? It smells better than gas. I’m not completely slamming science, it’s part of what I do for a living.

I just don’t like scientists who taint their results to slant towards what their theory was (happens more than you would believe), in the interest of $$ because most science is now centered around corporations.

As I said, you will not get an argument from me on a lot of the fundamentalist religious sects we see. But there are those who use theology much more open mindedly and in the analysis of existenialism.

I suppose I’m trying to tip a balance between the 2. (Not fanatical Theology though).

I think we all know that for a good 600 years the Pope was the most powerful man in the old world, which goes against the “morals” of that religion.

People are flawed, religious or scientific. Good or bad.

by judomania on Mar 25, 2011 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

sorry. i'm in a prickly mood today and quite a grump

i watched some show called “artic” where some middle class white guy was wafling on about presevring “Tradtions” as he watched some aboriginals lop the hands off polar bears. but it seemed the only thing traditional about the way it was done was a really old sword. everything else had all the trappings of modernity, like all zooming out to find them on their snow mobiles…also ’ve been huffing paint fumes all day in an enclosed space

i also do agree with you about bad motives with certain scientists. but like you said, that’s more a flaw with people, not reason.

and my problem itself, like you pointed out, isn’t especially creationism, a supreme being orcreative force, it’s the church and all the wrongs tht institution does and has done. it’s the teachings that people are condmened, abhorent or that certain peope are chosen. they’re all dangerous ideas with disaterous consequences

in the stand up it could very well be even. Bruce was goddamn fast but his mainly wushu style is probably not that effective in mma, regardless he can always kick anyone in the head

Everything seems so much clearer now that bum Jon forcibly removed shogun’s dick out of my mouth. NNR for president and Tibau for FW…he’s just too small for LW

Jeet Kune Do is MMA

The 2 have the exact same principal. Jeet Kune Do was not really a style, but a philosophy. You take from many styles what works and discard the rest. I am sure his ground game was great for the time, but would obviously be outdated today. That being said, if he were young and alive today, you could bet he would want to train with the best.

I would agree with you in almost every case regarding taking your hat off. This one not so much

Hardy didn’t know Lee, he is a tourist.

Paying your respects to someone’s grave that you have never met, but “admired” to me is silly, frivolous and attention seeking. The fact that he is there shows little respect for Lee’s family, IMO. What is even worse is the bench there for people to sit on. Disgusting.

by Ulf Murphy on Mar 25, 2011 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

i dont think being a tourist matters really

because would you want him to take his hat off if it was Arlington National…i dont know for sure, but by you saying youd agree with him in almost every case, you probably would, and thousands of tourists visit arlington every year…that being said, ive just been conditioned to take my hat off at certain times, but i never understood the significance of it…i wear a hat almost daily, and i take it off when im “supposed” to, but wherein lies the disrespect?

by magicmike on Mar 25, 2011 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I think if you have family buried in Arlington, then you should. I don't, so when I went I didn't.

I also didn’t walk across any of the grave sites reading random names that meant nothing to me. I don’t know anyone there, so I respected the site as being reserved for family only. I was respectful. It was like any other tourist destination, but for the fact that dead people were buried there.

Not nearly as touching as the Vietnam Memorial when visited on Memorial Day. While there, I met Vietnam veterans, men whose stares would make any of us a little wary, crumble to babies remembering the men who died beside them and asking why they were the one who was given a ticket home. I listened to war stories about fallen soldiers and was touched by the emotion shown 30 years after and the powerful memories of these young men, grown old. There wasn’t a gravesite. There didn’t need to be.

why the fuck do you have to take your hat off?

do dead people not like hats, just like tables don’t like elbows? what do hats have to do with mourning, are were you born in the 1800’s and believe along with this women shouldn’t show their ankles. useless traditions.

If she has a job she can pay for her own cleaning bill and why are my clothes of less value than hers? Please and thank you? Why say it at all if inside you mean it? Where do those terms even come from anyway?

Or are all of these things just being polite and without them we feel a little less civil, no matter what century it is. As for Hardy, I’d be emabarrased and hide that shit haircut as well.

a dead body however doesn’t care if you wear a hat. you tell me how the hat on your head does anything to a dead body at all. and as i said below. why is a hat so rude yet sunglasses are fine? sun glasses hide the widows to your soul can hide emotions you’re feeling for the deceased. yet they’re ok?

and again, you’ve gone to extreme lengths to prove you’re irrational but still not stated why when you have no hat on you head you have a deeper feeling of respect for the dead, why s so bad about a hat?

I was being sarcastic, you knew that right?

I was trying to show you that all those things you mentioned above were as important as taking your hat off. The dead don’t care, you don’t do it for them.

All the things you mentioned above trace back to mid evil times, chivalry, knighthood. Taking your hat off was to show that you meant no malice to your opponent, same as shaking his hand. Showing him you have no weapon.

Keep it on or take it off, your choice. I feel better when I do it.

it’s a pointless tradition which has no bearing on how much you respect someone. which you’ve proved by being unable to explain why somene SHOULD take off a hat

what wrong with visiting the grave of an idol?

just because Hardy didn’t meet the guy doesn’t mean its silly to go visit his grave. It’s not like the guy’s a nobody, its fuckin Bruce Lee. Little respect for Lee’s family?? Why would Lee’s family feel disrespected by a guy who obviously respects Bruce Lee and takes the time out of his day to visit his grave, that is the ultimate show of respect.

Fighting solves everything.

by Two_Words on Mar 25, 2011 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I believe in remembering the dead by honoring the living.

If there was someone that I admired enough to search out his grave, I would be more willing to search out his family and thank them for the powerful influence that person had on my life. I don’t understand how people can be so engrossed by someone that has no direct impact on their life, like celebrities. The actual inter-personal relationships in my life are more important to me than anything some random fighter, writer, musician could possibly create. Putting these people on pedestals, when having no real knowledge of who they were, doesn’t make sense to me. This is just my view.

To me, it is more important what that person left behind, in their written thoughts and their teachings to actual people, to search out the living remains of that persons legacy. Where someone is buried holds no signifigance for me.

Again, I don’t want to shit on anyone’s parade, these are my views, but when someone gets a “touching” picture near a famous persons gravesite, it seems like a tourist move, motivated by self-interest.

when i go to france i will try to visit graves of people who influenced and encourage me. but i wont be crying, and acting like it’s a personal loss. it’s more kitsch photo-op. doesn’t mean i’m disrespecting these men, i have nothing but respect for them. but they’re dead, and i don’t know them. so i wont be crying, taking off my hat, saying a few words and kissing the grave stone.

you can have a healthy respect for the dead, and do the tourist grave thing without feeling the need to “have a moment”. he’s english, supposed to have a stiff fucking upper lip not a blubbering snotty one because a film star died before he was born

Good Stuff Tickle

Sugar from the West Indies, Tea and Spices from India. The crown jewels in the British Empire. Hell, even Gibraltar, Cypress, the Bahamas, Egypt and South Africa were taken to make sure the shipping lanes stayed open. It was quite brilliant.

I am thinking had the British known the amount of gold/resources in the American West, the fight might not have been given up so easily. Once we realized the vast resources of this country and started utilizing them, you guys never had a shot of getting it back.

"We usually think our country is trying to fuck us over"

Most times your country (insert your country here) really IS TRYING TO FUCK OVER its people.

MANY Americans are just too ignorant to process this fact so they stubbornly and proudly accept anything their govt throws at them. Including giving your life in a war that will ultimately only benefit the govt.

The guy has a red mohawk...

In normal circumstances, I would definitely agree with you. But for Dan Hardy… keep your hat on, please.

Let's just chill.....
  1. - If he is crying there might be a deeper emotional connection of energy that Hardy feels. And that is something we should respect. The guy did train in a Shoalin temple at one time. With that training comes a spiritual side of martial arts. Though I agree that he does not show that side of himself in what we see in interviews and such, but it could be something meaniingful and we should respect that.
  1. Maybe he’s not crying

let's take it one step at a time newfie

by all means teach him “2” but leave “3” for another day. you have to give the brain time to digest things

What makes you feel that way?

It’s about a fighter (who is fighting this weekend) making a visit to the cemetery where a martial arts legend is buried. It’s a common interest post.

i agree with u308man

it’s a light personal interest thing. ok, maybe it’s nothing to do with an actual fight but it’s a little insight to fighters going about, doing there shit

a waste of a post is reading a post you don’t like, clicking on it, scrolling down and posting “what a waste this post is”. i mean i can see in the humour in the irony of you writing “what a waste this post is” because that post litterly is a waste. but i don’t think you meant it that way

Another reason why Hardy is one of my favorite British fighters. He pays respect to those before him and has been a martial artist for a long time. I admire him for living and training with the monks the way he did, really cool imo,
