With the inevitable ass whooping that Jones delivered against Shogun, whether due to surgery, Jones's exploitation of that weak knee, or whatever hooplah you want to believe gave Jones the advantage...(I subscribe to the fact that EVERYONE, including Shogun, massively underestimated Jones's striking game and power) People are clamoring for the first big super-fight in MMA.
With off the top assumptions, everyone is quick to believe that WW champ GSP is massively outsized by the middleweight champ. So, let's just look at the measurements, shall we?GSP: 5'10, with a 76" reach. +6" ape index
AS: 6'2", with a 77.6" reach +3.6" ape index
JJ: 6'4", with a 84.5" reach +8.5" ape index
Where in the size advantage does the MMA game become more important? Silva has been dogged all these years for having an enormous reach advantage over everyone his size, but in reality, he's only +3 for his height. Most of the middleweights he fights are usually only 1 or two inches shorter than him. GSP has enjoyed a pretty large reach advantage for almost everyone he fights, though he is a bit shorter. Still he has an impressive natural frame for his size, and his reach ratio is much closer to Jones than Silva's is. Jones doesn't even beg the question, we all know he could hold someone's forehead out with one arm and they would never be able to punch him.
Any boxing fans out there care to chime in how much of a true size advantage Silva has over GSP? Or does this make them seem a little bit closer than Jones VS Silva? Keep in mind, this isn't even comparing their standing weight, which might make this seem a little more obvious.
