After last nights Main event i couldn't help but walk away from seing shogun get destroyed the way he did. No disrespect to Jones as he proved he was the much better fighter, but its tough to watch your favorite fighter lose in that fashion. Jones may well have proved to the world that he's a force to be reckoned with, and that if you didnt know by now that he has just started his Legacy well now you know. Jones is a 23 year old phenom that keeps taking his game to different levels everytime he steps in the octogon. He's made all his opponents look like it was there first time in the ring. Last night he obliterated Shogun to win the UFC LHW title. Shogun was believed by many (including me) to be the number one lhw in the world, Jones made it look like shogun wasnt even in the top ten lhw in the world.
As a 21 year old MMA fanatic from first speculation one would think i know and am more of a "new school mma fan" that i have only been watching UFC since brock stepped onto the scene. I have been watching MMA since i can remember, im an old school MMA fan, like much of us are, but its tough when you see your heros and idols from the past the guys that paved the way for these new school athletes and fighters get destroyed in that fashion. Its tough to deal with the fact that they arent the best fighters in the world anymore. Shogun will be back theres no question about that but when you see fighters like Mirko Cro Cop (whos finished now) lose his fights the way he has his past five, it really crushes me. The thing we have to remember is the sport of MMA although its been around for a long time is still fairly young. And while the older fighters and those of the past generation are one dimensional these new athletes like Jones are very well rounded. Guys like cro cop, noguiera, wanderlei all have a specific area of expertise. and while Jones is put in the wrestler catergory i believe its safe to say he could be categorized as a striker, wresler and even his submission skills are great.
As the sport continues to grow we see younger and more talented guys coming in. They all know that you have to be the best in all of the categories to be a champion now a days. but we could only speculate of this young guy Jones how long will his regin over the UFC lhw division last? How long until someone comes in and takes his title? The UFC lhw division is STACKED and the belt has exchanged hands alot over the past few years. Will Jones be able to be what G.S.P is to the welterweight division? What Anderson is to the Middleweight division? Or will the be another "machida era"? we can only wait and see when Jones takes on Evans next.
