Mauro Ranallo and sorry I don’t know his name but the black guy who has sounds like he doesn’t know why he is there. Keep Pat and Shamrock is ok if Pat is there but they need a guy who can talk, not yell or sound like he is trying to do a batman voice. Although with Coker still running the show i don’t see anyone leaving.

by sir.tickleberry on Mar 12, 2011 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty much

It’s “business as usual” until the contracts expire with the talent, Showtime and M-1, then we’ll either see these guys move to the UFC or move on to another promotion/retire. Right now Zuffa can’t do anything because the contracts have already been signed so the only difference is that they will be the ones funding SF, the production and talent will largely remain the same for now. It’ll be interesting to see the immediate reaction of those who have been blackballed by the UFC or have refused to do a deal in the past but it’ll be a few months before we see any real changes. The UFC will end up with some of the top SF talent but those fighters that refused deals or left on bad terms in the past will be gone once their contracts expire.

by Two_Words on Mar 12, 2011 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

They'll merge at some point

Or at least they’ll pick up some of the SF talent and slowly kill off the company. Zuffa will make more money by promoting the top SF talent in their premier brand, matching them up with the UFC elite, rather than by funding a separate company. Right now they’re just waiting for the current deals to expire, once they do then we’ll see which guys make the move to the UFC and which don’t. Personally I expect them to sign up a few of the stars (Hendo, Gil, Overeem, Mo, Werdum, Silva and even Diaz) but to miss out on key guys, I’ll be very surprised if Fedor makes the move to the UFC and Semtex, Barnett and Shamrock will be gone as soon as their contracts expire.

Diaz and Overeem will make the move if they're offered the right money

The Japanese scene is pretty much dead and if they’re given big contracts then both Nick and Alistair will choose the UFC over boxing/K-1. Both of them don’t want to be tied down by one company as they can make more money fighting in other sports and promotions but neither have bad relationships with Dana or Zuffa and both would sign on the dotted line if they got paid what they wanted.

Fedor is another story though, not only does he demand a lot of money but M-1 are notoriously difficult to deal with (hence the constant renegotiations of Fedor’s SF contract and the failure to strike a deal with the UFC) and Fedor himself does not approve of Dana or the UFC. He’s a very religious man and does not want to join a company or work for a man that he dislikes or presents a negative image. I’ll be surprised if he finishes his SF contract now that they’re owned by Zuffa.

Most MMA fighters want the chance to fight on the main stage in the UFC as that is the company with the most fans, that pays the most and has the best talent on offer to fight against. Dana has ruined a few potential deals by opening his big mouth and acting on emotions rather than logically so there will obviously be some people who will never sign but with this deal I’m confident that we’ll see at least some top stars of SF fighting in the UFC. Nick, Alistair and Gil will all make the move once their contracts expire, unless they get big offers from other sports (I doubt Nick will get a big boxing fight and K-1 is struggling financially) or the Japanese scene makes a big recovery (very unlikely at this point), because there’s no alternative and they’re all too young and talented to retire now.

the fighters however have fewer options, you’re either on dana’s team or you’re on your own…pretty much.

by Two_Words on Mar 12, 2011 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

I'm keeping an open mind

Personally I think that one dominant promotion is the best option for the sport to grow as we will constantly be seeing the biggest fights but this will only work if the fighters are paid adequately, Zuffa don’t get complacent and allow standards to drop with no direct competition (like WWE did after buying out WCW) and Dana’s ego and other factors don’t keep top fighters out of the promotion. This could be a step in the right direction or the wrong one, it all depends on who ends up being signed up to the UFC and how good their shows and pay structure are in the upcoming months and years. It’s way too soon to judge now but we can all agree that this is a huge moment for MMA.

yeah overeem has said he's not interested in the ufc, but we'll see

the fct that he doesn’t care about the ufc will mean we’re more likely to see him in there…so i think. i mean who is going to get the better contract, the superstar who badly wants to be n your organisation or the superstar who can walk away from the table at any moment. i think dana will give hima pretty sweet contract

competition will arise. some of the strikeforce fighters will no doubt go to bellator…or another organisation will rise from the ashes

Lol well I doubt that he cares about that

He’ll be happier making a deal now and cashing in on the promotion that he built himself and no longer having to deal with Showtime and M-1 undermining him, rather than go into competition with the UFC and lose all of his money on his business. At least SF will still exist in some form for now and we’ll still get to see the planned fights, better than what happened when Affliction were bought out.

if that's what he has to do. it's not like fighters haven't quit with the belt before ad the ufc survives

plus you have the “champion returns” comeback ppv

i would see that situation as more profitable than no overeem at all

Sometimes I am God, if I say a man dies, he dies that same day.

by sir.tickleberry on Mar 12, 2011 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

So then it's not going to work

One thing for certain is reem is fighting kickboxing.

So when he’s over there fighting we just have to wait? If he gets injured over there? Does the hw go on hold until he finishes with k1?

Dana won’t want that, so it’s not going to happen. If Dana doesn’t like it he won’t do it, he won’t let his champion go fight overseas and put his division on hold.

It’s not going to happen, overeem would already be fighting in the ufc if that’s the case.

that's IF reem makes k-1 a deal breaker

he said he wanted a year to do it, to concentrate on k-1. and he did that and won it

now he’s a big family man i think big money ppv’s would sway him. fight a 3-4 fight contract in the ufc and look after his family.

it’s k-1 and no big mma fights or big paying fc fights and no k-1. i think he’ll take the money

Sometimes I am God, if I say a man dies, he dies that same day.

by sir.tickleberry on Mar 12, 2011 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

He won’t, in a recent blog of his he stated k1 is very important to him. He can still be a family man and fight k1. Trust me, k1 will pay him well and overeem will also be free to fight in other orgs against cans which he will.

The deal is bullshit, Strikeforce fighters are hard enough to deal with, now with loud mouth Dana who’s basically trash talked all there fighters..

Competition is the most important thing for this sport, other orgs challenging the ufc and giving more fighters s chance to fight. It’s good for media and helps grow the sport.

in all fairness strikeforce never was competition

i think it’ll create a situation of more amateur organisations and more zuffa scouting. maybe even keep the strikeforce challengers format as a way of finding talent.

this will all settle. if coker sold strikeforce he did it for a reason. the reason being it probably would have folded. look on the brght side. strikeforce is still going, fighters are still employed. zuffa owns it, and zuffa may swallow it. but if it was sold it would have gone anyway

Dan

the up and coming fighters now have an org to fight in thats controlled by Zuffa/UFC meaning, if they perform well, then they have a good chance at getting into the big show.

The UFC doesn’t want to eliminate the amateur leagues. They want to control it, so they can move guys to the UFC once they get good, which is what all the fans want to see.

Diaz has less shot against GSP than 'Ardy did.

The fact that he is fighting nobodies in SF and Dream for the last 4 years, none of wwhom was even a decent wrestler, makes people believe for some reason that he has a chance.

Nick got $150,000 for his last SF fight. That would be #2 in the UFC WW division behind GSP. When teh companies, merge, Nick will get Fitch/Kos then a Diego rematch, then get cut because he will never beat an elite wrestler. It is a Diaz genetic defect. ;)

Pity that once SF split all the WWF had for them were stupid gimmicks like El Matador and The Model. Even those 2 talented guys couldn’t make that crap work.

by joey21 on Mar 12, 2011 2:42 PM EST reply actions

WOW!

That’s pretty major. I think some of us were expecting this, but not for… well, several years! There’s a few major questions though:

1. How long till the UFC just absorbs the SF fighters?
2. How fucked is M-1 right now? (I find this one hilarious)
3. What about DREAM’s arrangement with SF? Hell, will DREAM even survive as it is?
4. Could this affect the UFC getting a large network deal? Say… UFC on CBS or something at some point?

I guess those are the major questions for now. Still, pretty major news.

by n4tacon on Mar 12, 2011 2:44 PM EST reply actions

1. The fighters are under contract. So, each fighter is different.

2. Real fucked.
3. I don’t see Zuffa allowing SF fighters to fight Dream fighters, vice-versa. It goes against their business model.
4. I’m sure it helps.

Fighting solves everything.

by Two_Words on Mar 12, 2011 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks

Yeah. I kinda figured the fighter contracts might be a bit of an obstacle for now. DREAM, even though I liked their sharing option, doesn’t seem like they’ll be around much longer with financing problems (DAMMIT!). I do find the M-1 bit hilarious though. They tried so hard to get away from Zuffa and now? Well, now the company they’re currently co-promoting with is Zuffa. Oh the irony.

wow, this is bad for the fans. monopolies are horrible. strikeforce could have made a fortune if they just had the balls to go at it alone.

instead, they sold out to the ufc and a guy who spent all his free time trashing their organization and fighters. the ufc will probably not allow strikeforce fighters to compete in different organizations.

maybe not, but their hw tournoment was making some noise

strikeforce was causing a stir and making just as many mma headlines as the ufc. dana couldn’t have that. i wonder if he will fire dan henderson again? if so, dan will make bank in dream. fuck dana white.

by Conan the Barbarian on Mar 12, 2011 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

because strikeforce was getting too big. fighters were starting to realize that they had other options than the ufc and they could walk

and make more like hendo did. the sf hw division was comparable to the ufc’s and people could argue about who had the better hw’s. the ufc can’t exist if it loses it’s shine. it needs to be dominant in all aspects of mma. strikeforce was getting too close.

it was wreaking havoc on fighter negotiations and stealing market share from the ufc. it had to be eleminated.

Good move, makes total sense both in the short term and long term

Gives Zuffa lots of options and possibilities.

Be interested to see if they use Coker and the SF platform to garner a way into Japan for the UFC. As White stated, he can use other ‘partners’ to deal with other parties whom he has pissed off..

Fair point on UFC/Japan

Didn’t even think of that. Coker could be another useful ally for Zuffa in their bid for international expansion. Dana’s big mouth as well as Pride folding has made it difficult for the UFC to get anywhere in Japan but with contacts already established between SF and Dream maybe Coker et al can help them make new contacts and get some deals for TV and live events sorted over there.

It's one of those deals where on first hearing you just think it was to snuff out the competition

but when you think about it it has lots of positives for Zuffa.

The other big thing for them is network TV in the States. White has publically slated ShowTime for years and has struggled to get the UFC on network TV.

Now he holds the two best orgs in N America and has way more bargaining power, especially when he merges the two further down the line. The sport will be more popular by then (if you factor in its growth over the last 4 years) so maybe they could compete with boxing in time. I still dont believe it’ll be the most popular sport in the world but it may well become one of the most profitable for its owners…

Zuffa will make the tweaks here and there and build the Strikeforce brand. They need more shows so I think Strikeforce will stay for a long time. This is progress boys.

Amazing. I hope merging and exchanging fighters happens as quick as possible, basically immediately.

BUsiness will not be as usual. They will explode the Strikeforce Brand using the UFC Hype and Promotion Machine and then merge them eventually.

This basically has made my year already. Thx Dana!

Let the twittering begin. I can see Overeem starting to call out UFC fighters and Brock wanting to fight Bobby Lashley. Possibilities are endless.

Can We Say WWE Buying WCW? Again?

Remember That Happened Exactly 10 Years Ago Around This Time. Anyway, I’m Excited To See What Comes Out Of This Purchase. If It Leads To A Merger, I Don’t Think It Will “Stack” The Divisions, I Think They’ll Just Keep Some Of The Better Fighters From Each Division (Reem, Bigfoot, Werdum, Diaz, Hendo, etc.). Maybe Total Unification Of The Division Titles Or Newer Divisions To Really Settle The “Pound-For-Pound” Debates.

The buyout of Pride and the disastrous waste of new talent/failure to sign the biggest star is a better example of the WWF/WCW buyout.
