Report: Strikeforce revenue reaches $30 million for 2010-11 fiscal year

Mma-rockstar-ring-girls_medium

UFC President Dana White might want to take his Strikeforce tombstone off layaway.

That's because a report from Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal (dissected by MMA Payout) has Scott Coker and his MMA fight brand (co-owned by Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment) generating up to $30 million in revenue for the 2010-11 fiscal year.

And unless 29 of it was spent on acquiring Fedor Emelianenko and his M-1 cohorts, it's hard to imagine that Strikeforce isn't turning a profit -- or at the very least breaking even.

While those numbers make Strikeforce look like a cymbal-banging monkey toy compared to the 800-pound gorilla known as Zuffa, consider that Coker and Co. only scratched out four million in 2006.

From the "Payout Perspective:"

Star-divide

Main source of income are ticket sales, sponsorships, and most importantly, television licensing. Back in 2009, Strikeforce signed a TV deal with Showtime, which MMA insiders said the promotion would make $25 million in licensing fees over the course of the three-year deal, which runs into 2012. The deal was made after Strikeforce purchased assets from Showtime’s previous MMA partner, ProElite for $3 million, which included roughly 42 fighter contracts and a video library of 20 live events to name a few.

Strikeforce has already planned an ambitious 2011 fight campaign including a heavyweight grand prix tournament that begins this Saturday night (Feb. 12) in East Rutherford, NJ, featuring a headlining bout (and quarterfinal match-up) between Fedor Emelianenko and Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.

A late summer/early fall pay-per-view has also been discussed.

Now it's time for feedback Maniacs. Do these numbers make it more appealing for free agent fighters worried about their futures? Or should these figures be taken with a grain of salt? Can the ship be taking on water in spite of these numbers?

While still far from perfect, Strikeforce always delivers entertaining fights.

Anyone have an argument to the contrary?

From experience

I can tell you that Jesse would have put the information into the article had it been available.

Considering SF is a private company, they are under zero recourse to release any information regarding their financial standing to anyonethat is not a part owner. And, considering Mania does not do any investigative reporting, there is zero reason to think that any additional information will be found by any of the staff. So, in a nutshell, it is what it is. Nothing more.

Mania condenses the confirmed news and puts it in one place for the diehard fans that make this site our home. We, the community, sprinkle in some op-ed and some T&A, with our semi-intelligent banter.

You could either accept this, without the instant jibes and cracks, or continue to make friends with alarming regularity like you have been doing. Your choice.

Only I would be dumb enough to pick a guy who couldn’t even beat his own wife in a fight agaisn’t a world class fighter like Nick Diaz.

this whole thing started with your “shoddy journalism” line, which you somehow refuse to admit was an insult.

however you intended it, i took it as a dig on Jesse, who is a quality sports writer responsible for half the articles that appear on Mania. So i said, sarcastically, “yeah, because your blog gets so much traffic.” meaning, it’s easy to insult the articles when you’re a keyboard warrior without his own blog.

the article is NOT a press release. if you want to bitch and moan about revenue or other information you think should have been included, you miss the point of the piece. it’s not investigative journalism, it’s passing along a story that’s making headlines in the MMA blogosphere. it’s the same thing the AP does every day.

but then you pick fights with everyone who comments on your first “shoddy” insult. that’s TROLLING!

Why the SF hate?

I don’t understand why in the home of the brave, land of the free, where entrepeneurs and business folk are revered, everyone shits on SF and Coker.

They’re running a business, just like the UFC. Sure, sometimes they scrap together questionable fights and there are a few visible cracks, but overall their product is good and has been providing exciting events.

There are points of criticism for the UFC as well. Of course, they are bigger and have been doing things on a grander scale, but my point is that it is “OK” to watch and enjoy SF.

LOL at your self-perceived gravitas.

The fact that you have to revert to name-calling and put-downs when someone disagrees with your point of view is indicative of your objectivity. If you are indeed a writer with your own blog, I suggest you develop some thicker skin rather than try to launch a “scathing” attack on someone else.

If you wish to call SF out on questionable business practices, yet call me ignorant for pointing out that the UFC also has flaws then you are one of two things: Dana White’s illegitimate love child, or someone has very biased beer goggles on.

Have a great day, walking dictionary.

Wow, even when someone says "let's quash this" you bear a grudge!

You really are thin skinned. Of course there’s an overall picture. You just choose to ignore it.

All I’m saying is that your pointing out a flaw in SF, yet not holding the UFC accountable for their flaws. You think they haven’t made their own positive press releases over in Dana world?

How about the fact that they didn’t want anyone knowing who the new 10% partner was that acquired a stake in the company?

How about Dana bitching about Fitch, but not stating the real reason was because Jon wanted a rightful slice of the pie for his own likeness in the game?

How about the fact that Dana went on record respectfully commenting about Coker and SF, and as soon as they acquired Fedor, started slandering SF’s financial position, and how he offered 10 times more but Fedor is a douchebag, and now SF is too, blah blah blah.

That is the overall picture. BOTH companies have their flaws, but considering the gloating that DW does, I would question his numbers as likely more inflated than anything Coker puts out.

I never mention the UFC. Neither does the article.

You brought up the UFC to have another way of brushing off valid questions about SF.

I didn’t even point out a flaw. I asked for some very basic info directly related to this article.

Ok, but maybe you can just say that next time right off the bat instead of:

“If you’re reading something related to revenue and profit without questioning the expenses… you are, by definition, ignorant”

Just sayin

Just gets old

When EVERY criticism or question gets rolled into “Why the SF hate?”

Funny thing

I got banned from BE for questioning the baseless hype for UFC fighters…

and I was much less insulting about it there
