Most MMA fans want to see Anderson Silva vs. GSP, and I don't blame them, it would pit two of the best fighters ever against one another. I'd go as far as saying it would put the top two fighters P4P against one another, something that's never been done before. I also think it would be a total mismatch, and have no interest in the fight.
Those who follow this site know that as much as i respect GSP, and will readily admit that he is the best WW to ever live, and the second best fighter P4P on the planet today.
I don't think the skill level between these two fighters is far off, although I do give an overall advantage to Silva, I just feel the size difference is too much. I know size in a sport where weight classes rule is a poor argument, but let's be realistic! Silva walks around at 220-230, and walks around at 6"2. GSP reportedly walks around at 180 pounds and is 5"10.
If you throw size out of the equation, you have a pretty even fight, but let's look at this from a realistic standpoint. Chael Sonnen is 6'1 and has olympic level wrestling. He manhandled an injured Silva for four and a half rounds...and lost. GSP's only hope would be his wrestling, but even though it's his strength, it's not even close to that of Sonnen's!
I'm not saying at all that GSP shouldn't move up, quite the contrary. I'm saying Silva has no reason to stay at middleweight. Anderson Silva is by far leaps and bounds better than every fighter at middle weight...So you are going to put a welterweight against him? To me, and i'm sure I'm not the only guy that thinks this, what does fighting GSP prove?
Anderson Silva vs. the winner of Shogun/Jones proves more to me than Anderson beating a much smaller opponent in GSP. I don't know, maybe I'm crazy, maybe I'm not. I don't want to beat a dead horse...what do you guys think?
