According to "The Spider" we can all thank Steven Seagal for this one, who apparently taught it to the middleweight champion and practiced with him in the back before Silva went out and actually landed it on "The Phenom." Can anyone think of a knockout more spectacular than this? Check out a gif of the already famous front kick after the jump:

This has bugged me for a long time how Rampage got away with this.. I mean Sorbral got in trouble for holding a choke to long and making a guy pass out, Rampage took 3-4extra shots WHILE THE REF WAS PULLING HIM OFF A UNCIOUS MAN on his opponent.
I guess Rampage new he never would beat a prime Wandy and saved all his shots til now.

Anyway, I agree. People say it can be from adrenaline, I say it’s an unsportsmanlike act that should be fined and disciplinary action taken by commissions and UFC.

Buakaw and Skarbowsky
both used it as a KO tool, but it’s still far more common in Muay Thai as a distance kick, to push your opponent away to launch other attacks. Even Buakaw normally aimed it at the chest, not face. It takes serious skill to KO someone like that (in MT at least, I don’t know much about TKD).

The fact that he was able to pretty much en a fight with the 2nd strike thrown shows his deadly accuracy especially with it being a front kick. something that no other GSP opponent ever has been. Factor in the very huge diffferential in length and reach, and the possibility of GSP getting busted up from the top truly exists.
I am just happy that there is a chance we will see it. Unfortunately the timing after the Shields fight, provided GSP wins (you never know) coincides closely with the end of the current season of TUF that is being taped. Considering Silva is working with JDS (rumor?) on TUF now, I would not be shocked if GSP/Silva are the next coaches and we have to suffer through another 6 months after the Shields fight until we get the superfight.

I agree with ur post D but i would not say GSP is a fatster smarter/better Chael Sonnen, they r 2 completly different fighters GSP is a great wrestler but is also good at implementing his gameplan n adding more techniques and mixing all the elements of MMA up. Chael on the other hand is more of an all in ur face farmer type of wrestler he even looks like a farmer lol. He is the guy who brings the pressure to opponenst while GSP is smooth on his feet and sets everything up. I do agree that GSP could take Silva down and pose some problems maybe even get the job done against him..but Silva is such a masterful fighter, is hard to come up with an answer of how it would go unless they meet in the Octagon

I also don’t believe the idiot I replied to who said that andy didn’t practice a straight kick, which is used a fuck of a lot in Muay Thai.
The thing is, in MT, you normally aim it at the chest and extend your foot into it to gain distance, it’s not a knock out move. I’ve seen some knockdowns from it, and have been knocked down from it myself, but that’s mainly due to balance.
To actually get the power and timing to ko someone with that kick, you’d need to practice it. the default way a muay thai fighter would use that kick is more like a very hard and stiff push to the chest.
btw - vitor didn't have time to choke.
He’s not an elite fighter. That’s the problem. If he ‘chokes’ every time he’s faced with an elite fighter, then the most logical answer to the problem is not that he’s choking every time, but that he’s not good enough.

but I sitll don’t think that means it was lucky. Everyone in every combat sport has done something that did more damage than they expected, and everyone has thrown a punch or kick that did less than expected. It’s the nature of the sport. Sometimes you throw a jab and all the stars align and it knocks someone down. But you still meant to throw it with power and do some damage.

The UFC on Thursday unveiled five fights scheduled to take place on its Memorial Day weekend card in Las Vegas.
A lightweight title fight between Frankie Edgar (13-1-1) and Gray Maynard (10-0-1) will headline the UFC 130 card on May 28. The fight is a rematch of the main event at UFC 125, which ended in a draw.
Also made official for the card is a light heavyweight bout between Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson (31-8) and Thiago Silva (15-2), which could determine the division’s next No. 1 contender.
The stacked card will also feature heavyweights Frank Mir (14-5) and Roy Nelson (15-5), a middleweight bout between Brian Stann (10-3) and Wanderlei Silva (33-10-1) and a welterweight matchup of Thiago Alves (18-7) vs. Rick Story (12-3).
The five fights will likely make up the main card of UFC 130. The event will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
