Dana White: 'Rashad Evans was insane' to take such a long layoff prior to 'Shogun' fight (Video)
But "Suga'" did it to preserve his shot at Rua's title at UFC 128 in New Jersey. Make your arguments -- was he smart or "insane?"

Lol I saw Jessie in CSI: Miami
She’s blonde now and hasn’t had the perm for years.

Really???
I think she’s one of the best mma interviewer/reporter out there and w/o a doubt the best female.
She seems like she really knew what she was talking about, she’s an all-around sports fan, good sense of humor, she controlled the interview, and most importantly she blew Dana away.
My legend precedes me like lighting precedes thunder.
And got to skip it because he was going to lose and Andy-Vitor is a much bigger fight than Andy-Okami 2

he wasn't insane, he was just scared
he’s only delaying the only posible out come for suga: another stanky leg. Rua all day via whatever he wants
Agree all the way.
This will definitely be his last title fight.
My legend precedes me like lighting precedes thunder.
that doesnt make sense
So Rashad is afraid to do “the stanky leg” so he delays the as you say only possible outcome to wait for the person who is gonna knock him out. Instead of fighting someone else who cant knock him out.
So you say he is afraid so he waits for the Ko instead of fighting someone else
Edson Barboza and Charles Oliveira are gonna stir up the pot at 155!

No...He knows getting molly-whopped in his next fight, he just wanna make sure it's for the belt.
Despite what the rankings in LHW divisions are, Evans has to be the weakest as far as the “top” contenders.
My legend precedes me like lighting precedes thunder.
Can't be any weaker than Rampage or Thiago considering that he beat both of them

sorta, yeah
he could have fought machida or rampage again, either of the two would have ko him. Those two by virtue of mma history and being former champs were the only viable contenders for an interim lhw title (he wouldn’t fight jones, thiago silva hadn’t fight yet). Since he was afraid of getting ko’d in an interim title fight and losing his chance at the real belt, he waited on rua just so he could still end up ko’d but at least this time being against the greatest lhw ever.
i do think rashad is a good fighter but is just that on a good day, rampage is better. Rua and machida are leagues above him, though
He beat Rampage pretty handilly and I think he wouldn't have that much of a problem doing it again.
With Machida who knows?
This fight for the fish is a fight to the death!
by doonerthesooner on Feb 3, 2011 1:58 PM EST up reply actions
don't wanna pull any excuses but rampage went hollywood and came back with a lot of ring rust and completely broken aim
he couldn’t punch suga’s ginormous head when he had him on queer street and close the deal. And that was coming off a year or so without a fight. Didn’t you see him withstand machida’s savage attack in the third frame? That rampage is the one that can close the distance with rashad, nullify the shot and kick ass all the way to the bank.
machida is not easy to take down and it’s even harder to hit. Rashad dancing and silly overhand will be to slow for machida, both he and rua will capitalize on that
Rampage didn't have an answer for the wrestling and at this point in his career I don't think he ever will.
And it’s all styles make fights man, I think Page is too slow for Rashad. I mean in 15 minutes the guy was only able to land one real punch. Machida an the other had, Rashad might have a chance if he uses the same game plan that he has been since he got knocked out.

machida's takedown defense is pretty fucking amazing
i mean his balance and sumo background keeps him upright, and on the feet he picks rashad apart viciously

rashad would dummy rampage for 15 more mins if he had to again
Wouldn’t prove nothing. Would have been totally senseless. A rematch after walking through a guy like that? For what? Who was he supposed to fight? Also Dana says he’s crazy to have waited for Shogun? Did I miss something or has Shogun ALSO not fought in the same amount of time? We’ve seen Shogun come back from surgeries before and look like ASS. We haven’t seen Rashad come back after a layover and see that, so its unpredictable. But Shogun should be the center of focus come long layover time.

Clearly Dana wanted to have Rashad fight again and he's sulking now because Rashad stuck to his guns and waited for his promised title fight
There was no other fight that would have made sense for Rashad, he’d just beaten Rampage and Machida “lost” to Rampage so that rematch wouldn’t have made any sense either, he’s already beaten Thiago whilst Franklin, Forrest and Randy have all fallen down the rankings, Tito and Lil Nog are struggling and Bones and Bader are just working their way up plus he trains with Bones so they won’t fight anyway.
Only smart thing for Rashad was to wait for Shogun to come back from injury and Rashad has shown to be better at dealing with a long layoff than Shogun, plus he’s been training constantly for this fight since beating Rampage whilst Shogun has been inactive and rehabbing.

dana sure kept his word for anthony pettis. lol.
how does dana think one of the lowest ppv ratings in recent history deserves another fight. i rather see pettis fight edgar than maynard. i guarantee more people would watch. maynard is boring and pettis is exciting and entertaining.

Considering that Frankie never actually beat Gray and Pettis hasn't even had a UFC fight yet I think it's fair enough having a rematch
Gray is still undefeated and is 1-0-1 against Frankie plus they both put on an exciting fight so he does deserve a rematch in my opinion. Dana should never have promised the Smooth-Showtime winner a title fight in the first place.

Well since I am an Edgar fan..I def want closure
With Gray..I also think due to the decision and the show they both put on Gray more than earned the rematch..and lastly although I think Pettis is a great up n coming fighter I jus don’t think he’s ready for Frankie or a top 5 UFC lightweight yet..and I would like to see how he fares againt a lower ranked fighter ie guida

"So you say he is afraid so he waits for the Ko instead of fighting someone else"
Not quite as you put it but yeah. He waits for his title shot because he has it now. Look, despite all the hate he gets (or possibly the reason for it) is he is a smart fighter. He has pointed his way to his last couple a fights. But he probably also is realistic that he got his clock cleaned via Rampage and Thiago. Were either not coming off their layoffs and in better shape, they most likely would have finished Evans. Go even further back and he got knocked all over the place by Machida and yeah, I think he waited it out because he knows he may not get back to that shot again.

And mo, apparently they never got on when they trained with each other and Vitor left the camp on bad terms. Also Andy has talked shit about Vitor in the past saying that he’s not worthy of fighting him for the belt plus Vitor is a big believer in respect and dislikes Andy’s showboating. Vitor and Wand also hate each other and the Silvas have made up so that’s another reason for the feud.

Rua’s performance after his last major knee surgery was awful and if that’s the Rua that shows up to the title fight then Rashad has it in the bag.

Only I would be dumb enough to pick a guy who couldn’t even beat his own wife in a fight agaisn’t a world class fighter like Nick Diaz.
Sadly,
I have to agree.
As a Rampage fan though, I win whatever the outcome, because I get to see Rampage attempt to avenge a loss (if he beats Thiago, which I think he will).

Rashad haters always pick apart his wins
Funny how these supposed top guys who he has no chance with were suddenly injured, out of shape or past it once Rashad has beaten them. Even he’s learnt to accept that the majority of fans and pundits won’t give him any credit no matter who he beats.

I'm on the front seat of the Rashad hating bus admittedly BUT
you can’t argue with facts.
Every ‘top’ fighter Rashad has fought has came into the fight with some major disadvantage.
The only ‘top’ guy not to was Machida………………..!
He’s even getting Shogun coming back from surgery! Come on! At least he hasn’t had Sardine fight him first to help him gameplan…

He thinks he is just gonna go in there and walk through Shogun. I hope Shogun ko’s fast in the first minute.

Thanks Rashad
Thanks for the opportunity to make more GIFs as you’re sure to get KTFO again while looking lost in the ring.
Thanks for turning and running from a chance to face Randy Couture, preventing him from earning one last title match before he retires.
Thanks for keeping your insulting, belittling antics out of the ring for a year.
If Randy was serious about one more title run then he'd have been facing the likes of Bones, Bader, Lil Nog, Forrest and Franklin
Instead he chose to accept fights with Coleman and Toney, neither of whom had any business being in the UFC to begin with and both being almost as old and in far worse shape than Randy.

He has more money than Junior and Pettis so he could afford the long layoff
Pettis was only on a WEC contract before so he needs to keep active as he’s not paid anywhere near enough to take an extra few months off to wait for Frankie-Gray 3 and Junior isn’t exactly a top paid guy either so he needed to keep active as well. Rashad has been in the main event picture longer than both of those guys and in the UFC longer, he has a great contract and just main evented and won one of the biggest ever UFC cards so he doesn’t need the money, instead he is able to wait for his promised title fight. I respect Pettis and JDS a lot for taking an extra fight instead of waiting but I’m not going to bash Rashad for taking time off and waiting for his promised title fight, serves Dana right for promising title fights in the build-up to these shows. He’s just upset now because Rashad outsmarted him.

Good post David W.S. yeah it seemed like Dana was a bit bitter that he couldent make Rashad fight another match while he waits for Shogun to get healthy. But thats not Rashad’s fault they should have set up a interesting match up for him with a top 10 fighter or an Interim LHW belt in the meantime but with who? I mean no one is available at the time being…and this Randy vs. Rashad fight offer, i sorta heard about it but does anyone know the inside story of what went down?
