The main event of UFC 127: "Penn vs. Fitch" on Feb. 27 in Sydney, Australia just became a lot more interesting.
That's because the winner will determine the next number one contender to the welterweight title, according to Dana White on a conference call today (via Twitter).
Both fighters have previously fought for the coveted 170-pound strap. Penn, himself a former welterweight champion, last had his shot at UFC 94, a four round beating at the hands of current titleholder Georges St. Pierre.
Fitch also ran up against "Rush" back at UFC 87 and met a similar fate. And although he managed to last all five rounds, he was soundly outclassed en route to a convincing unanimous decision loss.
The Indiana native has long wanted a rematch against the French-Canadian on his way to that elusive belt. Now he's just one step away from contesting for it once again.
But will it be against St. Pierre?
While, Fitch sorts out his issues with "The Prodigy" in the Land Down Under, Georges St. Pierre will be in preparation to defend the very title everyone wants to get their hands on at UFC 129 on April 30 against Jake Shields.
If he is to win that fight, company President Dana White has stated his intention to set up a superfight between "GSP" and middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva.
Were that fight to actually go down, it would happen at 185-pounds and likely be for "The Spider's" title. That leaves the 170-pound belt in limbo, seeing as St. Pierre has stated his intention to vacate said title if he were to ever make the jump up in weight.
Oh, the tangled web we weave, right?
How will this two division storyline place itself out? Stay tuned to "MMA of our Lives" to find out.
