U mad? Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker responds to Dana White's Twitter blitzkrieg following 'Fedor vs Silva'

Fake-coker-dana_medium

And the king of San Jose (via MMA Hour) is happy to have picked up another viewer for his Feb. 12 Showtime broadcast:

"At least the guy's watching, right? He's watching Strikeforce. As long as he wants to keep watching Strikeforce that's a good thing. I respect Dana and what he's done. Their success is great and our success is great, too."

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker won't join the UFC President's mud-slinging contest despite suffering a mighty blow to his promotion's 2011 heavyweight grand prix tournament after famed International fighting sensation Fedor Emelianenko got turned inside out by "Bigfoot" Silva in the main event of their East Rutherford card last Saturday night (Feb. 12). White blasted fans of "The Last Emperor" along with the gang at M-1 Global and beyond. But is Coker taking the high road because that's how he conducts his business? Or because he knows to some extent that Dana is right? What side are you on Maniacs? See a portion of White's Twitter rant after the jump.

GSP was at the Strikeforce show. No sense in having a brand war. Enjoy the show. Dana, coker, guys like GSP and vitor clearly just love the sport. They all watch other stuff. I’m sure Dana watches hdnet for sengoku and k1 when he gets a chance. Or I’m sure he will look up fights if he hears their good. And I guarantee he will watch guys who used to be in the ufc. Like I am sure he watched arlovski

If you can't keep your composure in a fight then you're never going to get anywhere, you can't lose your cool if you're going to ever be a champion

And MMAsts have to be held to a higher standard than footballers or hockey players because unlike those sports MMA is not mainstream and is still banned in many countries and states. It may not be fair but all MMAsts have to be more careful about how they behave than other sportsmen because the media and the public expect them to be a bunch of thugs, so when someone proves them to be right like Daley did then it further damages the reputation of the sport.

Yes he can...

I see him easily out wreslting Marq like he did against Denis Kang. I can see him out decisioning Okami by working him in the standup all fight long. I also see him out boxing Rich as well.

Just look at the skills he has. He fought Rash and he had a hard time keeping him down. It was a really close fight and it was split between many viewers on who they thought actually won.

And only beat Kang because he gassed after the first (as usual).

Kang isn’t even a wrestler, outwrestling him doesn’t mean he could do it to Marq (who has much better GG than Kang).

He can outstrike him.

Just because Bis is faster on the feet doesn’t mean he would win in the standup. I personally would give one shot from Marq the same points as 10 from Bis. Pitter-Patter is not a winning strategy to me.

Power in his punches.
Submissions.
Wrestling.
Mixing up grappling with striking.

Bisping is ONLY faster on his feet. He has no power.

Marq could win by sub, KO or decision. Bisping can ONLY win by decision. Therefore Marq has more ways to win this fight.

Bisping tkd is good enough to keep on the feet. Bisping mixes it up more with the strikes and is faster. Nate has power, his wrestling isn’t enough and Bisping is also pretty good on the ground.

I was only using the numbers to back up what Deuce was saying about Randy having a hard road.

by Jimbobb on Feb 15, 2011 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

good call Jimbobb

I made a similar case a while back. It’s still relevant I believe:

As MMA fans I think we sometimes get caught up in the association of a level of talent based on emotions or a name-recognition. Fighters undeserved frequently get reps and hype from fan due to one or two moments (Gonzaga head-kick to CroCop anyone?). That rep sticks (good or bad) when we try to debate this elusive concept of who’s best…especially the p4p argument.

Really the only way to settle it is for these guys to fight each other, but even then that will just tell us who was better at that point in time.

Just for grins I took a look at the weighted average winning percentages for Fedor and Brock’s opponents. Nothing super scientific, just for curiosity’s sake. Fedor’s opponents sport a 56% win rate, while Brock’s is 63%. This doesn’t take into account of how good someone was when they faced these two, though as Brock proved you can lose and learn and then beat the same guy.

Again, not saying this makes a case for or against either of them, but it is interesting to view their opponents’ body of work when chasing the dream of determining which of the HWs is best.

What it does show that is amazing the quality of opponents Brock is facing so early in his career

you can hate the guy but C’mon you have to give credit to the man for facing higher quality opponents fight after fight win lose are draw and thats what it’s about. It would be interesting to see what guys like Wandy and GSP have faced as well.

I'm not insane. My mother had me tested.

by Newfie3 on Feb 15, 2011 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

The stats would be a lot different if you looked at the records when they fought but that would be a ton of extra work. If you add in draws and NCs winning percent does go down but in all cases that I looked at if you take into account duplicate opponents winning percent goes way up. An example would be anyone who faces Matt Hughes or GSP multiple times like BJ. Those guys have 85% or higher win percentages.

I don’t have either of those I only did a few to point out to Roberto that Shane Del Rosario has fought no one good and his perfect record is filled with terrible fighters.

Brock Opponents 71%
Del Rosario – 59%
Cain – 74.4%
Randy – 68.1%
Fedor – 64.8%

At least nobody is below 50% because that would just be sad.
Randy really didn’t have an easy road his 3rd fight ever was against an undefeated(4-0) Vitor.

GSP’s Opponents = 73.9%

BJ Penn’s Opponents = 76.3%

john i honestly don’t understand the argument for wear and tear, brock lesnar not only had a grind in college as a wrestler/football player, he came out of college and did the 365 day a year grind in WWE, then came to MMA and did well. he’s old as well.

consider frank mir’s nasty injury he’s up there in age, randy couture wrestled on an olympic level while competing at the absolute highest level in MMA and at 4 weight classes and is 14 years older than your boy yet he is still fighting top guys and WINNING, hendo was an olympic wrestler and he’s doing rather well at 40 years old,

his wear and tear is no greater than anyone else’s in the sport the heavyweight division just now has guys who can equal his speed and atheleticism while being bigger and stronger with equal skill..

your argument just comes from straight up nuthuggery

Why is that? Back then I was a power house kid, I did whatever I wanted too whenever, got a problem? I’d just steal your lunch.

I was huge back then, all muscle. I developed fast so I was like 5 years ahead of all the kids in my school. No current mma fighter would be able to beat me.

I opened my big mouth infront of Two_Words so he pimp-slapped it shut! That’s the last time I challenge his MMA knowledge. Oh yeah, and I like dudes

by danago on Feb 15, 2011 12:52 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Aight let me tell you how that'd go down

You’d take my lunch the first day. I’d let you. Then the next day I’d roll with all my big friends bc I was a kid in hs who was cool with everyone and was always owed a lot of favors. Then we would all jump the shit out of you and beat you within an inch of your life. Then every day after that you’d be super nice to me and eventually I’d get you doing favors for me too and maybe, just maybe you wouldn’t be the bitch you are today.

Thats how thatd go down. You dont gotta be big, you just gotta be cool. Apparently you got too big too fast and didnt grow your brain so you dont know that. Good luck with your eventual reality checks

And I know what you’re gonna say cause you are that stupid and predictable. You’re gonna say “nah, then the day after that I’d beat your ass when you are alone”. Fair. But if that was your style I’d start rolling around with my lax stick. That way next time I got you alone I’d beat you to death with it and claim self defense. With your reputation the prosecutor would drop the case immediately. Your bullshit works until you run into a real mother fucker. It doesn’t take size to get real on a bitch

You’re kidding right? Dana is one of the smartest businessmen I’ve ever seen. Where would mma be without this guy?

Just think for a second, Dana is just doing his job and a damn good job at that. If you were him your job is to protect your company as the no 1 mma organization. You can’t go around and start praising other brands. That’s why you don t co-promote and you don’t openly praise other fighters

Nail on the head (demographics)

what happens when said demographic (not naming any names) outgrows the antics?

What DW does is calculated, but the UFC wil hit a ceiling rather quickly with continuing antics from its public voice. Can you imagine DW making these cracks in Japan or China? Hell, anywhere in the Far East or Mid East? It is so against their culture to be so bombastic, there is little wonder that Lorenzo stepped up to handle forreign negotiations.

Did you see the weigh-ins for the SF event last week. It was embarrassing to say the least. Less than 100 people there, and they had all of the HW fighters there to support the event.

The UFC is light years ahead because of the promotion aspect of things. Dana is a big part of that. Love Dana or hate him, the UFC is a huge force, and has helped MMA substantially in the last decade.

He also got into trouble with gay and lesbian organisations for what he said. It doesn’t matter who Loretta Hunt is, the language that Dana used was unacceptable and made him and the UFC look bad.

Maybe

But at the end of the day, people are going to love or hate MMA and the UFC, based on the product that is pt out there. If anyone is that queasy about a sport, because of something a promoter said, they aren’t going to be thrilled about dudes trying to kill each other in a cage.

It presents a negative image though

He’s playing up to the stereotypes of “cage fighting” by behaving that way. If he truly wants to bring the sport to new countries and cultures and convince uneasy politicians that MMA is a legitimate and safe sport and not a violent sideshow then he has to act professional. Ranting at an MMA reporter or trolling twitter is not the way to grow the sport and like I said it doesn’t take much time for anyone doing their research on Dana to find these quotes. If Bob Reilly wants to further delay MMA being legalised in NY all he has to do is watch Dana’s youtube videos and look at his twitter and use that to slander his name and his company.

You’re right. That Dana/Loretta video didn’t have any effect.

Except when I showed up to sign my Clear Channel contract to host an FM Radio show on Saturday late nights in New York City talking MMA — only to have the Vice President of Business Development tell me they’ve decided to go in a different direction after that video made the media rounds and “presented an image not consistent with the goals and direction of our brand — or the sponsors who support us.”

Thanks D-unit.

And for the record, the VP of Business Development was a woman.

But it does hurt the bottom line in this scenario because if I bring an MMA radio show to the New York market and I’m lucky enough to make it successful, it too has a trickle down effect and can bring more fans to events in this area, more sponsors to fighters, etc.

I wasn't taking any of this into consideration when I made that post.

I was only speaking in direct terms. I don’t think people stopped buying his shirts or PPV’s because of the words he had with Loretta. But there was probably other small shit-storms that came from it (like the one you mention).

It may have stunted the growth of the UFC, but it obviously didn’t stop the PPV numbers from growing as they have since the incident.

I don't know newfie.......

Shamrock and that Strikeforce jackass are pretty fucking bad………Bas doesn’t bother me nearly as much……he’s much better than shamrock. In terms of the other guy, is it the same guy that Bas hosts that studio show with on HDNet?

I would much rather have the HDNet team than the crappy SF guys.

I can't hardly watch Inside MMA anymore

All the jumping around and really bad format, and as much as I respect Bas for his fighting days, that guy is like on crack or something. Reminds me of Tommy Boy in the diner with his “little pet”

Gus Johnson

is the one I hate. That guys know nothing about MMA.

Is he the black guy that sits opposite Florian on the ESPN MMA show?

That guy that sits opposite Florian

doesn’t know shit. Kenflo’s tongue must be bleeding by the end of each episode from biting down on it so much. He really restrains himself from going off on the guy.

Coker good for the sport

I really like Coker and StrikeForce. First of all they put some great events together. Secondly they help a lot of fighters. Especially the ones that get cut from the UFC. So far Coker is doing well for our sport. I like the guy. Of course UFC is number one, but StrikeForce will be around for a long time!

Coker is not the brightest business man though and I could honestly see them going out of business

They invested in Hendo and planned for him to take out their champion Shields at the time and that backfired, now the co-promoted this entire HW tournament believeing Fedor would at least make it to the second round and that has backfired and unless it’s in the contract this is Strikeforce and M1 globals tournament and paying M1 half the profits with no Fedor is insane!!

dana is is own enemy when it came to fedor..

fedor is a man who is respectable..i am very sure that dana’s persona is a big reason he never signed with the ufc..(well the whole co promote thing too..lol) see i personally don’t care that he curses his ass off..or that he can act childish..he is doing something right obviously by the success ufc is having..but the saying..it takes money to make money.. fits ufc like a glove…costs sooooo much money to get things main stream..they had it..
now what would have happened if fedor signed to the ufc..lost his first two fights…he would be defending fedor..and putting on more fights for him..to ride his ass into the sunset..

Pure Class.

Coker has more class in his left jowl, than Dana has in his entire egotistical, pasty body.

DW - shut up

I am stoked that SF is getting as much attention as it is…hey, 5-6 times a year it puts on a damn good show….now DW needs to stick to being a CEO….and stop acting like a punk kid running his mouth…this sport is much better off without the )#(*@ talking…there is a level of respect in MMA that makes it the greatest sport in the world…As a promoter you are no doubt incredible….over the past several years you have had many convinced that UFC fighters are the best….Recently you had a washed up can named Vitor ranked number 1…WOW…how did that happen…oh, he beat the crap out of Terri Martin…and then he defeated an over the hill over achiever named Franklin…and lets not forget about how you used to pimp the Pitbull and the Maniac a couple years back…you had convinced your following that they were the best hws in the world…hahaha…the you had a guy named Koscheck #1…come on…really?…#1?…then there’s Randy Couture who has ten losses to his credit (I believe all but one by KO or submission)…and Chuck Liddell who has been KO’d 4 of his last 5 fights…yet, these guys are the greatest fighters to ever enter the cage…people obviously have not figured out how full of it you are…Your pissing on Fedor after defeat is in poor taste…I understand it from the casual UFC fan that have been spoon-fed 13 seasons of TUF….but as a fan and figurehead of MMA it reeks…why is it that you bash him yet your stable of fighters are not jumping your bandwagon?….his record will never be touched…Fedor was an icon of the sport and gave MMA fans a lot of memorable moments…just like Randy and his 10 losses….and Chuck and his 4 demoralizing KO defeats (I’m a fan of both)….time brings and time takes away…show a little more class….also a couple things with your UFC cards….they are turning into a bunch of fighters scared to lose their jobs…that crap you sold us last weekend was pretty bad…and your meddling (ie, Machida/Rampage) is becoming obvious….and yes I know you’re PPV buys are through the roof…that’s great…but so were WWE’s back in the day…stick to being a CEO…have some respect for ledgends of MMA (not just UFC).
