The former UFC middleweight number one contender describes his relationship with the late Evan Tanner in the upcoming documentary "Once I Was A Champion."
While the forums have been calling for Sonnen's head since this clip was released, do you think he was being disrespectful towards the fallen fighter? Or just giving an honest account of what it was like dealing with the eccentric Tanner -- who was known for his unique and sometimes erratic behavior?

While tanner might have been loved by people it doesn mean everyone has to love him.
Sonnen has his perspective of how An adult should behave an Apperently tanner wasn’t it. I really don’t understand why people expect everyone to love him. Just because he passed away doesn’t mean Sonnen has to love him all of a sudden. Plus he wasn’t being disrespectful he was being honest and I for one appreciate that.

i think the problem is that this doc is a testement to a good man
it’s a doc to memorialise a man who in his heart was a genuinely decent man who wanted to do all he could to make the planet we live in better for the people who live in it. he didn’t beat women, he never fucked kids, he didn’t get drunk and mow someone down. he never conned people out of money or tried to get something over on anyone.
now you don’t have to like or care for him. that’s fine. but to go on a doc which is a memorial and slag him off for no other reason that he cared about the fans who supported him and made the effort to give that respect back, and he lived a life where a sense of freedom was more important to him than money and status(which is foreign to to chael i know). to belittle him, to say he was unintelligent, childish, just say nothing at all.
it’s not a tanner expose. decline to be in the doc if you have only bad opinions of him. but no. he uses this doc to promote himself the only way he can these days. talking shit about a dead man when you have no right to speak ill of anyone regarding irresponsiblity and not acting like a man.

Documentaries should be unbiased and get the whole story. It’s not like Chael hijacked the documentary. It sounds like Chael thought Evan was nuts. And he gave some evidence as to why. And I don’t think he was trying to belittle his use of MySpace. He was pointing out the extreme Joe Silva had to go to get a hold of him. The way he worded it made it sound like he was speaking as if it was back then and he didn’t know what MySpace was.
the thing is this. documentaries are not all the same, there is unbiased and there is name calling

unless i’m mistaken, Sonnen was busted for high testosterone levels, which he claims are from testosterone replacement therapy. That’s a medical treatment, which is far different than steroid use.

i'm not disputing the fact that he's a POS
but usually fighters who cheat don’t admit to taking testosterone hours before a fight. Cheaters don’t admit it until after they get caught (see Hermes Franca), or they simply never admit it even after getting caught (see Josh Barnett).
Fighters get cleared for TRT all the time (see Todd Duffee and Dan Henderson here). Sonnen’s mistake was not following the proper procedures so that the commission and medical board would know he was taking TRT ahead of time. It was a completely stupid mistake, i’ll give you that. But i don’t think it’s the same as a roid user.
Sonnen is crass, tact-less, ego-maniacal and just an all-around annoying POS. And i wouldn’t put cheating past him at all. But for the record, what he was caught popping positive for was in no way the same thing as steroids, and to say it is bashes a completely legitimate medical therapy that i hope i will never need to use :)

Taking test is however steroids. Some steroids, like Winstroil, help cut weight and gets you ripped. There are many that work along those lines and there are many that increase your test. Chael cheated and that’s a fact! Even if he had a script for it bc anyone can get that.

It’s a lot more complicated then just “putting two and two together”. I’m no expert and since I know that I’m going to consider the possibility there’s more to it then just TRT yourself and you become a roid monster.
I wonder if since your low on Testosterone already you may take a TRT and a lot of it passes through your system. Again, I don’t know so I’m not going to assume that TRT and Roids will have the same effect on the body.

First he says he documented taking TRT on a prefight disclosure form, but they couldn’t find a disclosure form where he did document being prescribed TRT.
Then he says he told the Keith Kizer, the Exec Director of NSAC, and Kizer denies ever having that conversation with Sonnen.

where someone was taking the testosterone replacement treatment and he nailed the explanation totally..like chaels was like 2000 or some ridiculous amount ..where regular replacement treatment puts you at like 400 or some small amount, incomparable to what chael had in his system..

I have been on testosterone replacement theraphy for 10 years now started when I was 23 now 33, and I get my levels read 3 times a year.
Chael is reported to be on testosterone replacement theraphy using 2 injections a week. Only corrupt doctors use injections for Testosterone theraphy unless the patient has severe depletion (which is rare). There are only 2 types of testosterones used for injections which are the same which are used by the bodybuilders which are: Cypionate or Enanthate. So Chael has to be using Cypionate or Enanthate which are extreme testosterone boosters and will give an athlete a HUGE advantage. My total testosterone was 250 which is low and I did Chael replacement and that put me into the 2000 range for total testosterone and my arms went from 14.5 inches to 16 inches and I didn’t even workout. I was quickly put on a cream testosterone by a new legit doctor and now my range is within normal levels 700-900. It was also reported that Chaels levels were abnormally high, so one has to assume they are above 2000 especially if he is taking Enanthate or Cypionate twice a week which will give him SUPERHUMAN strentgh I.E. Barry Bonds hitting 70+ homeruns. Only a corrpurt doctor would allow testosterone theraphy using Cypionate or Enanthate. So basically Chael is cheating….end of story.

By what I gathered if Sonnen would have submitted the paperwork from his doctors and had the athletic commession informed before hand he would of been allowed to do this legal? that he legit has an issue and legit needed treatment and failed to report it properly and had a dr that was not legit and didn’t know what he was doing, but Chael assumed he did and did not realize he would test so high out of normal range and it burned him… but i doubt it, I think he used it as an excuse to cheat, whether he has a legit condition or not. And no excuse to not file the proper papers in a timely fashion…afterall isn’t that what responsible adults do? lol/

But besides Sonnen what stops a shadey doctor that can go threw the process to allow them to cheat even just a little? Say you have a doctor do all the paperwork right but instead of getting up to 700-900 he is boosting to 1200-1500 and few weeks before the fight going to 700-900 again? I think this will be a tough drug to test as most likely if Sonnen is doing it others are as well?

I’m with you on this. The title is a little misleading as to the content in what he was saying. I was about ready to jump all over Chael for saying that Evan Tanner was irresponsible and didn’t act like an adult because in my mind he was referring to the terrible tragedy that happened. But he wasn’t. He was saying that when he knew Evan, he felt those things because he didn’t return phone calls or act professional with the UFC. What’s wrong with saying that? And for all the people calling him fraudulent, I can say having worked in the mortgage industry myself that it’s the banks and federal regulations themselves that push these deals and allow crazy and irresponsible loans to happen. For the most part, the agents are just the messengers and middle men between the borrower and the bank. It’s a very blurry line to say the least, and I’m going to give Chael the benefit of the doubt as to what happened and not jump on the hate wagon so fast. Is Chael a polarizing figure? Yes, but at least I believe he’s honest to himself and says what he thinks and thinks what he says. . .is he the nicest guy ever? no.

It’s a documentary on Tanner, it’s not like he just randomly took a shot at somebody when he didn’t need to. Nobody is universally beloved, and if you are really setting out to accurately represent the subject being covered, then you need to acknowledge the bad as well as the good. You need people like Sonnen. And it’s not exactly like he was destroying him and bringing up seemingly random slights. He said that in his experience with him he saw a pattern of what he saw as irresponsible and poorly thought out behavior. Given that Tanner died as a result of making a bad decision, it’s important information to discuss in the film, that he did have a history of getting caught up in things that weren’t always great for him.

if you look at any other fighter interviews in the movie no one bad mouths tanner like this ass. Forrest says that he disagreed with some of evan’s ideas but he didn’t talk shit about him. to say that you need people like sonnen is wrong. He never has anything positive to say unless he’s talking about himself.
It’s a documentary. There is no rule saying a documentary must be nothing but glowing praise of the subject. The time and place for it, if the film maker is trying to make an honest look at Tanner through the people that knew him best, is right where it occurred — an interview for the film.
Also, it’s a 90 second clip from a much larger piece of work, so judging it without the full context of the film, and more importantly the full context of what Sonnen had to say, is premature and unfair.

Honesty and truth are respectful. It is not however always painless.
He is giving his personal perspective on his contact with Tanner. Sonnen is painting the picture of how this behavior was affected by inner demons (my wording not Sonnen’s). These people were asked about things that they saw in knowing Tanner that he may have been heading down a wrong path. If the documentary wasn’t about an untimely end of Tanner’s life and his struggles, it wouldn’t be made at all. If Tanner was fine, walked away from the sport, and playing hopscotch down at the Boys and Girls Club , this story wouldn’t be told.
Basically, folks need to seperate their hate for Chael. It’s about Tanner!!

tried to answer for me, I’ll just say that initially, Tom was looking for someone to do the fight by fight recaps on fight nights, which was something I was doing on Cageside Seats. Nate recommended me to him and we went from there. Jesse has been a big supporter of mine and been working with me and pretty much threw me right in to posting as much as I do. It’s grown from there. And now here we are.

Duece – Most of the traffic we get is direct. As in, people found us and bookmarked the site, and we’re a daily destination. A lot of it is specialized too though. Search string type posts like what Jesse did today with the Arianny pics.
Arianny Celeste bikini pics blah blah.. shit like that brings in hits from people searching for it.
As for people reading comments, I know some do. My brother told me he does. I know a lot of people just skim the articles though and never click into the posts. The way the site is set up, a lot of posts you don’t need to click into because they are all on the front page. So it’s a little bit of both.

I only commented on that one part because he rest of your post seemed reasonable.
But getting on the director would be no different and him altering the interview could possibly be even more disrespectful. To ask somebody how they truly feel about a friend only to edit his answer to how you feel he should have answered would have tainted both Chael and his memory of Tanner and possibly even Tanner’s legacy. I don’t like Chael or the things he says because I don’t believe him but I wouldn’t digitally alter what he says.

Who is Sonnen to judge people?
What makes someone an “adult” or “intelligent”? There are extremes, sure, but there’s also a lot of grey area. Tanner, in my opinion, was x100 smarter than Sonen. And just because Tanner used Myspace and didn’t answer calls makes him irresponsible and a “child”?
Furthermore, Tanner was a noble man, trying to “change the world” on his own, to be a better place. He did fly out to built a playground for kids he did not know. He opened a house for fighters to live and train in. He might not have succeeded but he TRIED and he would still be trying if he was alive today.
What has Sonnen done? He talks trash to almost every opponent. He made a bunch of racist comments towards Brazillians. He broke the rules (cheated) in a fight. He is a criminal. And most of all, he’s a politician. Sonnen talks a lot but it’s never really anything positive. So yeah, Sonnen is a “non-contributing zero”, a polar opposite of Tanner.

you would be laughing. The video is like a minute and a half of a man being serious and calm and recounting some info about someone else’s behaviors. He chose to decide those behaviors reflected upon the man’s ability to be a responsible adult. Personally, I find that when people start saying things like"act like an adult and how old are you?" they are usually insecure in their own adulthood. So the guy had his reasons for not returning some people’s phone calls and for wanting to be social online, if that makes you an irresponsible adult, I guess there have been times all of us are guilty of that.

Sonnen is a garbage human being. He is bad for the sport and I hope he can never compete again.
I remember a while back (before the Silva fight) someone saying to me, that Sonnen is very successful in his career as a real estate agent and the best MW fighter. I answered that I doubt he is very successful outside the octagon and that his pathological public lying cannot possibly lead to success.
A couple weeks later he had lost to Silva, been popped for testosterone, and a couple months later he pleaded guilty to money laundering and by selling out his partners in fraud is expected to get a mild sentence:

I do feel however, that people with kids and jobs should be allowed to have a pass on the attendance policy at college, it really pisses me off if I pay my tuition, earn perfect grades and am told I have to repeat a class due to missing too many days (ten I think it was, cause of medical and wk and kid issues combined).

are independent study, you get the book and a syllabus and show up only for tests and email the prof your assignments and any questions… I LOVE that format, aced everyone of em they offer so far. But since I am studying a subject that has lots of lab and collaboration projects and studio hours, I have to be there, it sucks.
