Tonight saw the conclusion of the 14th season of TUF in a mixed finale, filled with some exciting fights, shocking finishes and an abysmal main event as the cast members stole the show and completely outshone their coaches. I don't know what happened to Jason Miller but that has to be the worst performance of his career and unfortunately for him it came in his most high-profile fight to date. Whilst Michael Bisping hardly looked like a title contender he was able to whether the early Mayhem storm and battered his rival TUF coach who was clearly running on empty until the fight was thankfully stopped before we reached the championship rounds. It was a very underwhelming way to end what had been a good show.
Whilst their coach may have come up short in the main event Team Miller's Diego Brandao and John Dodson both put on impressive displays to earn themselves UFC contracts by defeating Team Bisping's TJ Dillashaw and Dennis Bermudez. Dodson especially looked outstanding and it looks like TUF has produced some much needed fresh talent at BW and FW.
Speaking of TUF winners Tony Ferguson was able to defeat the veteran Yves Edwards in a tough fight that he will have learnt a lot from. Edwards caught him on several occassions in the opening round but in the end Ferguson's takedowns and pressure were enough to take the decision and at this stage of his career a tough fight against a veteran is exactly what Tony needed to continue his development as a fighter.
As expected from a 10 fight show featuring unknown talent to those that didn't watch TUF none of the scores were spectacular but we did see some big changes at the top of the leaderboard and we also saw a Canadian only pick 1 out of 10 fights correctly. So to find out who is in line for the money with only 1 event to go and to have your chance to mock the GSP fan that can't pick fights follow me after the jump.
Event Winner (the John Dodson Award of Excellence)
In a low scoring event it was the 2x Money Pool winner Tim Sylvia himself Violent Mike who managed to pull out the event victory and earn himself even more of our money after scoring 60 points to win $20. It's been a good few weeks for Mike, after successfully conning Stinky Fingers out of his last event's winnings he was able to sucker Freenow into a bet on a taped fight before pulling off a close event victory tonight. Despite only scoring a perfect 11 from the Bryan Caraway 2nd round submission he was able to consistently pick winners, with Dustin Pague being his only incorrect choice. After a slow start the former champion is coming on strong and with this victory edges into the money positions at the expense of NNR and is within touching distance of Agar. Congratulations Mike, even if you were outscored by a BE poster.
Commiserations once again go to Two Words who yet again comes in 2nd after scoring 58 points. Despite scoring 11 points on Caraway as well as on Michael Bisping's 3rd round TKO victory he goes away with nothing. As both Mike and Words picked Pague it has to be the incorrect Yves Edwards pick (he was only 1 of 3 people to pick Yves) that cost 2nd Words the victory, which is why we all have to put up with Mike's gloating for another week.
Honourary mentions go to Agar and The Pride for scoring 51 each and whilst that hasn't won them any money this time it puts them in first and second respectively of the leaderboard just ahead of Mike. With only 12 points separating these 3 we are in for a tight finish, will the silent lurker take the glory once again, will the brash Pride fanboy live up to his smack talk or will the former champion take back his title for a third time as he continues to make a living from gambling with Maniacs? Find out next week after Jon Bones Jones retains his title. Oh and why have I failed to mention NNR, Stinky Fingers and Sarah? Just keep reading...
Biggest Loser (the Mayhem Miller Award of Mediocrity)
I guess he's too busy for the money pool because once again ANS failed to input all of his picks, this time his only pick was Mayhem by 2nd round submission leaving him with a whopping score of 0. The other man to fail to make all of his picks for this event was Ponch Hoe, who only picked Mayhem by UD and Tony Ferguson by 1st round TKO leaving him with a fabulous 5. Just once I'd like everyone to make all of their picks.
Out of those of us who bothered to pick for every fight it was Yan who came last with a score of 11, just 1 shy of tying ABB for the worst ever Money Pool score (those who don't pick everything don't count). Yan should thank Marcus Brimage for winning a UD as that is the only reason he didn't score a genuine 0. I hope Mike has a good sig of shame awaiting you.
But the biggest overall loser has to be NNR who fell from 2nd out of the money spots after scoring just 32. NNR paid the price for not watching this season of TUF and in the end was only able to correctly pick Bisping, Ferguson, Dodson and Brandao as winners as well as Caraway by submission. Yet again NNR chokes just when he has the title in his grasp, better luck next time Chael. Speaking of chokers the last event winner Stinky Fingers was unable to maintain her fine picking form as she scored just 31. Like Mike, Kim was able to score a perfect 11 on Mr Miesha Tate but after that fight he only correctly picked Bisping, Ferguson, Brimage and Delorme to win. And a strong start to the season Sarah has seen a dip in form and realistically she needed more than 35 to challenge for the money. Despite picking 6 fights correctly including the hot fight she was unable to correctly pick any methods.
Underdog Pick (the Prince Albert Award of Underappreciation)
In an event featuring several fights that were tough to call as well as some one-sided match-ups there was only 1 fight in which as a collective we all called it very wrong and that was John Albert's 1st round submission by strikes victory over Dustin Pague. Only 2 Maniacs picked Prince Albert so congratulations to P-Dub (41) and Newfie (34) who both earned 7 points by picking him to win. It didn't make any difference at all to the standings but it's still always sweet to pick an underdog winner.
