Miguel Torres speaks out on his UFC return: 'I knew I made a big mistake' (Video)

"I knew I made a big mistake. I knew what I said hurt people and I had to own up to it, be a man and accept it. I had to educate myself and learn how I hurt people. In the process I learned a lot of things. That's the biggest thing I learned out of all this, your words are very powerful."

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bantamweight fighter Miguel Torres, who was released from his ZUFFA contract back on Dec. 8, 2011, following a controversial rape joke on his official Twitter account, talks about the learning process that led him to "be a man" and "own up to" the fact that he "made a big mistake" with his comments. UFC President Dana White was just as quick to re-hire the former WEC bantamweight champion as he was to fire him, after Torres "impressed" the fight boss with the way he handled his business. Are you ready to welcome him back with open arms? Or not yet? Anyone think he shouldn't have been fired in the first place?

It's not Dana's reaction to it that irks me

It’s people’s sensitivity getting the best of them that pisses me off. I understand Dana feeling like he has to protect his company’s image, but it’s all petty nonsense that should never be an issue to begin with.

Exactly

It’s gotta be the movies or media or something that teaches people to start crying and whining when someone says things they don’t like. As far as representing the company, like I said, guy was on his own time on his own account. Then you have Rashad who at a press conference to hype a UFC fight making a Penn state joke…

It’s just bullshit politics at play all around.

Like the way this was handled all the way around

Dana needed to make an example of somebody because of the recent bad pub caused by some other fighters and Torres was it. Torres has never been a problem on the Zuffa/WEC payroll to my knowledge and should have been given an opportunity to make amends which he did. Good to see Dana take him back after a short cooling off period to this initial story of Miguel’s firing. When you work for a public company, you do need to watch what you say in public especially concerning issues that are sensitive. Hopefully, good lesson for Zuffa and it’s roster of fighters.

Yes it’s a stupid game, but you have to deal with the reality that this is “how it is”

When you say crazy shit, and you are in the limelight, then you are going to get your balls busted and have to be held accountable.

People are complaining that it’s all fake and insincere, and that may be, but just like you can’t go around the job talking about co workers tits and telling rape jokes, people in the media can’t do that shit either.

?? He was on twitter, on his own personal account

it’s nothing at all like “going around the job talking about co workers tits”. He’s on his own time, at home, on his own personal social networking account. It seems ridiculous to me that having a UFC contract means a fighter represents them at all times, 24/7 every second of their lives.

So....

The point of twitter is to talk to your fans. That’s if you are a famous person. Otherwise get a secret account, like they don’t share their personal email. They are representing themselves with these accounts.

I think the NFL has fined some guys for crazy shit they’ve said on twitter as well. It’s no different for other athletes and sports orgs. Look at Weiner. He had to resign from the house for posting pics of his dick.

I get what you are saying, but if you work in the lime light then when you are out in public you are on the job. So if you go to jail, get in a fight, say some racist shit it’s going to bite you on the ass. Wether you’re an actor, sports guy, politician etc etc. And if it’s a joke that gets misconstrued you just need to be a little more careful

by jtc5150 on Dec 29, 2011 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

"They are representing THEMSELVES with these accounts."

That part I agree with. If he wants to crack a rape joke on twitter, lose fans and possibly lose sponsors and become the villain at the ufc shows that people tune in to watch lose. Then so be it. He’s only hurting himself. I guarantee not one person that read his comment blamed it on the UFC or changed their view on the UFC because of Miguel Torres.

Just because a cop isn’t kicking down someone’s door and taking them away for an inappropriate comment they had doesn’t mean censorship isn’t going on. It’s just coming from a different source in a different form. I can understand if the guy is at a press conference, fan expo etc.. saying some shit and gets in trouble. He’s on the clock, company policy, he screwed up. I get that. But on his own free time? On his own account? I don’t know how people think it’s reasonable that someone is obligated to behave a certain way or censor themselves at all times, 24/7, just because of who they work for.

I get censored every day

I don’t get to say everything that crosses my mind. Do you? If somehow a private email got out, or his email got hacked I could maybe see your point. He has a twitter account to promote himself as a fighter who fights in the UFC. The UFC is paying these guys to tweet. They have a cash for tweet program going!

Did you know employers check what you say on twitter and FB before you get hired now? Lot’s do.

Did you know that people get fired every day because of the shit they say?

So why did the NFL fine and suspend Michael Vick? He was fighting dogs on his own time. He became a felon on his own time.

by jtc5150 on Dec 29, 2011 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

Are you assuming I agree with any of that??

Just because something happens, doesn’t mean I agree with it. My opinion is the same. All of those examples are examples of a society that has gone WAY overboard with censorship and politics. Michael Vick included. Dude did his time, the law punished him, wtf does the NFL have to do with any of that?? Nothing.

An employer’s role in a persons life should stop when the clock stops and they should stay completely out of any employees business.

And of course I don’t say w/e pops into my head at work, that’s common sense. When i’m home and when I’m posting something online that’s a completely different story. I’m not representing them 24/7, I say wtf I want.

I agree with your theory, but my point was he should have been smart enough to know what was coming. This shit has gone down exactly like I thought it would.

“In a perfect world”, but we are far from it.

He can say what the fuck he wants to, just shouldn’t use his real name. Like 99.9% of the people on the internet. Do you think danago’s name is danago? haha

I get where you are coming from, it does suck that people can’t be more true to themselves without people getting but hurt. That said I can see a little of the other side too. Dana just trying to save him self from sponsors leaving hm, and protest groups outside of his offices and events etc etc.

Also too though, since we are all about free speech and freedom, don’t you think Dana can just fire a dude for doing something that offends his sensibilities? Shouldn’t he be able to hire and fire people as he sees fit? Kind of like buisness with the sign that says “we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone” etc

by jtc5150 on Dec 29, 2011 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

Dana does that as is

And it’s not something I agree with at all, and I don’t think that firing someone and cutting off their source of income has anything to do with exercising free speech. The guy that says something on his own time that has nothing to do with his job and gets punished for it is the one under attack, not the other way around.

And I don’t believe the UFC has suffered or would suffer any embarrassment, loss of sponsors etc.. because of something Miguel Torres said. I just don’t believe it. Sorry. Sell that to someone else.

when you're a professional athlete on television you represent your employer 24/7.

That’s just the nature of the business. The UFC isn’t just built on what happens in the Octagon, its also about the fans relationship with their role-models outside of the cage. Fans dont just like fighters for their fighting ability, they grow more attached based on personality…which equals more $$ for Dana.

That doesn't explain the Chael Sonnen's/Tito Ortiz's of the world

You have plenty of villains in the sport that people tune in to watch lose. It also doesn’t explain how one man on his own personal time on his own twitter account gets fired from a job when another guy makes a similiar joke (worse imo) at a press conference while he’s on the clock tryin to sell a fight.

And again, people need to get this idea that “o this happens, so it’s normal and that’s how it should be.” out of their heads. There’s so much garbage going on all over the world today because of that line of thinking.

It’s quite simple. I learned this long ago…the media is evil.

These guys are celebrities. Nobody gives a shit what Joe the produce clerk says on his twitter, but if a politician or someone on tv has an opinion…it gets plastered on every website.

And even if 90% of the people agree with you…you’ll only hear from the 10% that dont. And Ariel Helwani will stand up in a press-conference and ask you questions about that 1 statement you made, that means shit all…but he needs something to write.

And then all of the organizations will come crying to get their publicity and tv-time and the non-ufc fans can say their “i told you so’s”.

The lesson here is:

Rape victims hate “Surprise Vans”..

I'm in the trunk as she drives the van,

Or

Raping is not OK even in surprise vans.

What I really wish is that...

…they made his return to the UFC contingent on him finally getting a normal fucking haircut.

People make mistakes

Miguel made a mistake and he got fired for it. But unlike a lot of guys, he owned up to it, educated himself, and made amends ,which is really just being a man about the whole thing. A man is defined by his actions and Miguel, to me, has defined himself as a man because as a man, we all make mistakes through words or actions at some point. Whether or not he should’ve been fired in the first place is debatable but what’s important is that he’s back in the UFC, he’s training and moving forward in a positive direction. I think MT should be a shining example of what one does when one makes a mistake, they deal with it, learn from it, make it right, then move past it in a positive direction while learning something important in the process. Much respect for Miguel and I hope to see him get a title shot soon. A battle between him and Dominick Cruz would be a great fight!!

Double-Standard

Was watching Russell Peters on tv recently, doing a Christmas Special with a small live audience.

So, he does this joke about how he thinks Santa should always be white. Then he impersonates a brown Santa…he says it just sounds weird. Chinese Santa? nah.

Then he says “black santa? nah, the gifts are supposed to go into the house, not out.”

Everyone laughs. Camera pans the audience, showing a black lady laughing.

I dont get it. If anyone else told that joke (not a comedian)…they’d get slapped, sued, shun by co-workers, society, labelled a racist, have to take sensitivity classes.
