"I think everyone thought that (Masvidal had the advantage striking) and I was eager to prove everyone wrong right there. I knew he was working hard on his takedown defense, it's hard to get guys down. Some things in training camp didn't allow me to do as much wrestling as I wanted to, so I knew I was going to have to strike with him. I'm confident. I may be the... you know, that's the toughest striker I think I've had to fight at 155 and I feel like I might be the best striker in the 155-pound division now."
Gilbert Melendez was out to show the world last night (Sat., Dec. 17, 2011) at the Strikeforce event in San Diego that all that talk of Jorge Masvidal being a better striker was craziness. And that's exactly what he did, outworking "Gamebred" on his way to a unanimous decision victory. He didn't come out unscathed, as you can see in the above video, but he's still got that 155-pound strap wrapped firmly around his waist. And after outperforming Masvidal standing, Melendez now thinks he may just be the best striker in the lightweight division. Anyone buying it?
