Lost in the shuffle of the recently announced UFC flyweight tournament, is the fact that one of its competitors, Demetrious Johnson, already had a bantamweight bout lined up next month.
Johnson was all set to take on Eddie Wineland at UFC on Fox 2 on Jan. 28, 2012, at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, until he got the call to move down to the freshly created 125-pound division. A chance at a championship is far more important than a fight against Wineland, after all.
Sorry, Eddie.
The good news, though, is the powers that be wasted no time in finding him a new opponent. From UFC.com:
"With Demetrious Johnson joining the flyweight division, former bantamweight champ Eddie Wineland will now be facing TUF 14 standout Johnny Bedford on January 28th in Chicago," said UFC president Dana White today. Both fighters have verbally agreed to the bout.
That'll do.
After winning consecutive "Knockout of the Night" bonuses in his final two WEC bouts, Wineland was thrown into the fire for his first two under the UFC banner.
He lost clear unanimous decision's to Urijah Faber and Joseph Benavidez, respectively. This fight is no battle for contention; it's a fight for employment.
Bedford has far more to gain and a lot less to lose. He made a successful debut with the promotion just this past Dec. 3 with a dominant third round technical knockout win over Louis Gaudinot.
A win over a former WEC champion would do wonders to springboard is career.
UFC on Fox 2, which will mark the promotion's second appearance on network television, will be headlined by a light heavyweight number one contender bout, as Rashad Evans and Phil Davis return from injury to battle for the right to fight Jon Jones.
Also penciled in for the FOX fight card is a middleweight title eliminator pitting former championship challenger Chael Sonnen against streaking 185-pound wrecking ball Mark Munoz.
