Frank Mir feels bad Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira requires medical attention, but not for submitting him at UFC 140
Frank Mir is one of the most dangerous submission fighters in mixed martial arts (MMA) today, with nine out of his 16 professional wins coming via tap, nap or snap.
Even though the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt takes prides in his stand up abilities, at UFC 140 on Toronto, Ontario, Canada, this past weekend (Dec.10, 2011,) Mir reminded the MMA world just how efficient he can be once the fight hits the floor.
After getting caught with a perfectly placed right hand to the back of his ear, Mir went into survival mode by trying to shoot in on Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Once the fight hit the ground, Nogueira -- who is widely considered to be the best heavyweight submission artist on the planet -- attempted a guillotine.
And that's when the tide turned.
Mir was able to escape and, in the process, trap "Minotauro" in the kimura seen around the world. With a strong inclination that Noguiera -- the proud and accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt -- wouldn't tap, Mir had no choice but to add a little bit more torque to secure the win.
Mir got the win, but only after Nogueira's arm snapped like a twig and Herb Dean stepped in to stop the fight.
After the bout, at the UFC 140 press conference, Mir wouldn't go too much into detail about the incident; however, speaking to Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour, Mir explained that he was just trying to earn the win. And even though it's a shame Noguiera has to get his arm repaired, he does not feel bad for what happened:
"I just locked it up and I wanted to make sure he didn't get out. I'm locking up a submission, and in my mind I want to keep applying force and don't lose it. By the time he tapped the injury had already occurred. I understand the mentality; you're trying to wait for the last second but once I pulled the arm back he could have tapped. But this is Nogueira, a great ground fighter, he's been in that move in practice and gotten out, so he hesitated I'm sure. I'm not going to let go of a hold until the referee tells me to break the hold. I would never do anything dirty or purposely hurt you. I just want to win the fight, the fact that you have to get medical treatment afterwards that sucks. He's another martial artist I hope he can go back to the gym Monday like everyone else.I feel bad that he has to go get it repaired, but I don't feel bad it happened. It would be like a quarterback apologizing for scoring a touchdown. If me and Nogueira ever rolled again, I could easily be the one on the receiving end of the kimura."
This isn't the first time that Mir has caused serious bodily harm to another opponent using his highly decorated submission skills. At UFC 48 in 2004, Mir became the UFC heavyweight champion by submitting Tim Sylvia with an armbar that also broke the champion's forearm just 50 seconds into the fight.
With his impressive win over Noguiera, Mir has now won three straight and is knocking on the door of a title shot. He, of course, has to play the waiting game to see the outcome of the monster number one contender eliminator fight between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem, which is scheduled for UFC 141 on Dec. 30, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Unless Cain Velasquez and the promotion is up for his recent challenge.

"My weight is not enough and strength is not enough either, so I have to take the fight by mastery." - Fedor Emelianenko
Not true, a guy I know named Bruce Hoyer who is a very good grappler grappled Mir once and Mir held on to his arm well after he tapped and the ref tried to step in and messed up his arm for life (so far) still feeling it.
That match probably happened gee, well over 3 or 4 years ago. He even comments about it on a facebook post of the video of Mir vs Nelson grappling right here… https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=100597460033460&id=77561962959
IF YOU THINK REEM SHOULD BE RATED ANY HIGHER THAN AROUND THE #5 HEAVYWEIGHT (AND THAT IS STRETCHING IT) THEN YOU ARE A FLIPPIN MORON, PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

Well, I despise Mir, but I have no issue with breaking an opponent's limb if he's been given ample time to tap and doesn't do so
It’s like the Aoki-Hirota fight. Aoki had every right to break Hirota’s arm; if he’d left it at that and not gone on his middle finger tirade, I would’ve had no problem whatsoever .

Well strictly speaking...
it’s not like these guys are hardwired with a gauge that tells them how much force is going to break someone’s arm, or for that matter, how much force they can apply that will make their opponent tap w. out breaking the limb. the only thing I ever find distasteful is when they keep the hold for a significant period of time after their opponent has tapped.
trust me, you know when someones arm is going to go lol, but you think its going to dislocate not snap like that

ya, but if there’s any risk of them slipping out as a result of you alleviating the pressure then for me it wouldn’t be worth it, knowing or not knowing. I’m the guy that likes to hold on to the ball tight until I’ve ran right through the endzone. I’m too scared of pulling a DeSean Jackson. Funny, that’s actually kind of what Noguiera did.

It's not worth it in practice.
If a black belt is cranking my ankle I tap like a little bitch so I can walk to practice the next day and hope not to let a black belt crank my ankle.
It literaly took less than 2 second from when he grabed it to when it poped
I didn’t even feel any pain until it snaped.

I always keep reading that about ankle locks. It has different tendons or something, to which you don’t feel the pain, maybe less nerve endings or somehting? And then it’s just too late. That sucks man.

wont be the last.

Nog knows better than anyone the consequences of not tapping! I can’t watch the replays but that doesn’t change the fact he had ample time to tap!!
Plus it’s ironic nog was the one talking about breaking mirs arm!! Btw there was nowhere near the amount of debate around the tin Sylvia one, it’s because nog is a legend and this is just unexpected!!
by the real mo on Dec 12, 2011 7:29 PM EST via mobile reply actions
He should have said this from the start
and then just stopped talking. This is a bit of a better side to Mir.
"My weight is not enough and strength is not enough either, so I have to take the fight by mastery." - Fedor Emelianenko
Did you guy not see nog tap though? He tapped of course but it was too late. I just don't get why everyone seems to think the ref stopped it with no tap.
he tapped but after it broke
there’s sort of a difference
"My weight is not enough and strength is not enough either, so I have to take the fight by mastery." - Fedor Emelianenko
I guess? But articles here never say anything about the tap.
by Cyclonejoker on Dec 12, 2011 7:59 PM EST up reply actions
Because Herb stopped it due to the broken arm and not the tap.
That’s why Bruce called it a TKO stoppage. That’s what Herb must have told the judges.
"My weight is not enough and strength is not enough either, so I have to take the fight by mastery." - Fedor Emelianenko
He already showed concern after the fight in the talk with Joe Rogan.
He said he hoped Nog was alright and had a quick recover. And that was over a broken arm, we typically hear less from guys who just knocked an opponent completely unconscious.
You mind your own damn business.

Well no shit!
Why would he feel sorry for submitting him? Weird.
Because he snapped his arm in two

He said he is sorry for Nog being hurt.
What more do you want?
Also, the guy asked, “Why should he feel sorry for SUBMITTING him?”

I think Mir was respectful in his words and actions after the fight. Heavyweights are so big and so dangerous that injuries can happen very easily. He isn’t glad that he injured Nogueira, but it happens in MMA. Frank need this win badly to stay “in the mix” in the division and the injury sustained by Big Nog shouldn’t tarnish Mir’s accomplishment.
Am I the only Frank Mir fan on this site?
Seems to be the most hated guy in the sport? Can’t say I dont see why, just wondered if I’m the only fan?
Sakuraba beats Silva, Aoki would beat Miller and Vitor Belfort didn't deserve his title shot - In my opinion, the craziest points I've read on this site...
I love Frank Murr.
One of my top 2 favorites. And yes most the people mad easy so they don’t listen to what he’s saying so they hate him. But this time most the people here are defending him which i agree with.

than Mir’s recovery.

How would this fight be looked at if it was on FOX?
They must have shown that arm break al least 5 times after the fact. I just can’t help wonder what would happen if this fight happened on network tv. I’m curious to see what the UFC will do broadcasting wise if something like this ever occurs on FOX. Is mainstream ready to see to people breaking each others limbs? I sure hope so.
by Adolf Oliver Bush on Dec 12, 2011 10:47 PM EST via mobile reply actions
In this sport people get broken sometimes. Fox is well aware of that. They show football injuries like that all the time.
Dana will just tell the guys to sound extra concerned in the intervirews after the fight.
And to make sure to hug it out after the fight, stuff like that.
