UFC 140 results: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's broken arm stare (Pic)

Photo by Ed Mulholland via ESPN.com

In this amazing image, captured by Ed Mulholland for ESPN.com, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira stares at his mangled arm immediately after Frank Mir got done breaking it in the co-main event of UFC 140 last night (Dec. 10, 2011) in Toronto.

It was the first time in the legendary Brazilian's career that he's been submitted.

UFC President Dana White mentioned to Ariel Helwani that Nogueira also suffered injuries to his shoulder in addition to breaking his arm, which will require immediate surgery. In fact, "Minotauro" will be flying out with White tomorrow to get taken care of. He's expected to be out for quite a while.

After the jump is the x-ray of Nogueira's arm, which shows the brutally broken bone.

Hats off to Mir for the sick submission

Good luck to Nog getting that wing mended.

Who's faster home to first? Yadi or Torty?

damn man

Mir has Nogs number. Nog should have stuck to the GnP, tried to make a statement going for that choke and instead he may be out for a long long time. I’m more worried about the shoulder injury since it isn’t fully disclosed yet, at least the break was quick and kind of clean, they can reset it well.

I posted earlier that i thought there may be a shoulder injury too?

If yes, it is like Nog was death rolled on that arm buy a big croc/gator….. Like an industrial accident. Mir was really sick with that shit, really solid. Traditional jitz is still very potent.

it's like people seem to forget

for all the commentating and Pompousness Mir exudes dude is a monster on the ground. I’d like to see Mir V Barnett if Josh wins The SF Tourney and comes over. Catch as Catch can it would be a american grappling clinic on display.

That is a top call

I think Josh would get it, only because he is a very natural athlete and possibly with better cardio. His Catch wrestling is so active…… Again i’m immediatly under rating Mir?? Mir has really earned my respect.

I'm one of the few people here that likes Mir as a fighter and commentator. But I find it near impossible to root against Nogueira.

Not many people like him. Excellent guy and I hope he’s ok.

I like mir alot, as a fighter and commentator.

He’s a great fighter with probaly the best ground game in the hw division. His striking has come a long way too. His commentary is also very good imo, he’s very knowledgeable and he explains things in a way casual fans understand. He doesn’t stutter like brock, lol

I'm with you 100% Swede

I’ve been a Mir fan since his first M&F cover days. I actually think he is a great commentator too and am actually confused by the Mir hate that is rampant here at Mania. But you can not boo a guy like Big Nog. What a class act. And he actually looked very impressive in this fight before Frank came out of nowhere with that sub.

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses off my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

Totally agree with both of you

I like Mir quite a bit – especially given the brutal motorcycle accident he overcame and his dedication/desire to return to the top levels of combat sports. Intelligent and hard working – seems like a decent guy despite the arrogant face he shows a lot of the time.

Big Nog is a class act and shows a lot of respect for his fellow human beings. Not too many people who’s hand I’d like to shake, but he’s one of ’em.

Mir is the best fighter turned commentator

His commentary during the WEC days was outstanding. He’s very well-spoken, incredibly fight-smart and he says things as they are. He’s not trying to sell shirts and plug crappy shows. He sticks to the action. He’s a favorite of mine, has been through the ups and downs and I just hope that he maintains the work ethic that’s won him 3 in a row.

Five top favorite fighters:
1. Lyoto Machida
2. Thiago Silva
3. Michael Bisping
4. Chan Sung Jun
5. Frank Mir

honestly i doubt it

because as good as mir is on the ground, he clearly showed it last night, he didnt try to take it there against nog, and he wouldnt against barnett…nog is a better striker than barnett, and as much as nog was doing very well on the feet last night, mir is still just as good a striker if not better…i think he picks barnett apart on the feet in that fight, but i would be just as thrilled as anybody else if it hit the mat

by magicmike on Dec 11, 2011 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah that would be battle on the mat

Barnett has his biggest test in a long time as he finally is facing a top ten HW somthing his not done in a long time. You look at many of the fighters from Barnetts era like NOG, CC and Fedor and you have to kind of think the same with Barnett right? Well I think Barnett’s fighting style is better suited for for fighting in the octagon with todays rules than any of the above I mention. Against Mir it is a tough one to call as you stated Mir’s striking is better but Barnett in the grapple is hard to pick against.

Mir's attitude

I know sometimes he seems pompous when being interviewed but I think it’s really just confidence and honesty. He knows he’s good, maybe the best grappler in the game, and when he assesses other people he is brutally honest. But isn’t that what you want from a commentator?

by Seth72 on Jan 30, 2012 11:35 PM EST up reply actions

Hell yeah

He’s like a character from Blades of Steel, but he continues to do awesome things under duress. He’s still a very good HW and i take my hat off too him. Much respect for his abilities over a very long haul……

Wrestling mistake...

Nog made a tenical mistake when he tried to sit out pulling of the switch and left that arm out there.. Once Mir had the hammer lock on the arm he wasn’t letting go.. He almost finished him before they started rolling but couldn’t get that leg over Nog’s head — regardless – nice piece of grappling. Well wishes to Nog for a speedy return.

The dude tried to step on that stump which is worse than what happened to Nog. Nog’s break must have sounded like a gun going off as I’ve broken the same bone and it was loud.

because he had Mir on the ropes 15 seconds earlier, and had faint hope of escaping and finishing what he started. Then SNAP

Agree with the second comment definitely, I was stupidly not thinking much about the fight for ages

Then I remembered Nogueira being healthy for sure and what he’d want to prove because of the first fight. I think when the dust settles it will be the fight that is remembered the most for sure.

I don’t mind admitting that I would probably be convulsing or something if that happened. I’d be afraid of losing my arm / shoulder for months or more so i’d have tapped if there was chance to.
