UFC 140 results recap: Jon Jones vs Lyoto Machida fight review and analysis
Former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida was expected to be Jon Jones' stiffest test to date when he challenged for "Bones'" title last night (December 10, 2011) in the main event of UFC 140.
And he was -- well, at least for five minutes.
Despite "The Dragon's" best effort, a terrific training camp and being in incredible shape, he would be Jon Jones' shortest title fight to date.
That makes three legendary champions finished in three tries for the 24 year old superstar.
So what key adjustment did Jon Jones make that helped him gain a victory? And what's next for both men?
Jon Jones came out to strike in the first round against Machida, wading forward looking to utilize his 10.5 inch reach advantage, and it wasn't the best idea in the world. It appeared that "Bones'" plan of attack was to utilize his kicks early targeting Machida's lead leg. He landed a few stiff strikes, but Machida remained elusive and kept his distance.
When Jones got a little frustrated and began to close the distance, perhaps getting a little cheeky with his attack, Machida finally pounced, exploding forward the second the champion threw a leg kick and cracking him with a big straight left hand to the jaw that sent him reeling at least temporarily.
This strike was definitely the hardest that Jon Jones had ever been hit in the UFC but "Bones" went to his instincts, closing the distance with a clinch and he immediately recovered.
Machida stole the round with that strike.
As Machida was brimming with confidence in the beginning of round two, Jones seemed a little more tentative with his striking, but at the mid-point of the round, the tides changed drastically.
As Machida tried to come inside and land a hook, Jones ducked into him and forced a clinch. Within seconds, he pushed forward with a failed trip takedown attempt but the second that didn't work, he was in prime position for a full double leg takedown and he proceeded to yank "The Dragon's" legs out from under him with great force to put him on his back.
Look closely, and you'll see that the instant Jones had Machida on his back, he attacked with an elbow and that single short blow was the strike which opened a nasty cut on the former champion's forehead, which only emboldened Jones.
Machida worked his way back to his feet, but he was bleeding heavily from the gash and was still in Jones' clutches. After a few heavy knees to the legs and body, he was able to back away and reset.
The next time Machida pounced with a lead left hand, he was greeted with a huge right from Jones which stunned him and temporarily dropped him.
As Machida tried to get to his feet, Jones swarmed him, wrapping up his neck with a modified standing guillotine choke which twisted his head in a painful position and he pressed him heavily against the fence.
With Jones' long limbs, the torque was unbearable and within seconds, Machida's right hand goes limp signalling that he had lost consciousness. As referee John McCarthy stops the bout, Jones dropped the former champion on the canvas in a heap, walking away like an action movie hero from an exploding building.
So much for Jon Jones' toughest test.
For Lyoto Machida, he fought the typical Machida style and it appeared to be working after about seven minutes. He had Jones flustered in the stand-up but unfortunately for him, striking is just one facet of "Bones'" lethal arsenal of attack. Once the fight went to the ground and in the clinch, Machida was overwhelmed with elbows and knees which eventually led to his gash and defeat.
Despite having now lost three of his last four, don't expect an easy fight for "The Dragon" in his next bout. Potential battles include a rubber match with Mauricio Rua, the loser of the upcoming Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis fight or perhaps Forrest Griffin.
For Jon Jones, this was the type of fight he needed to answer several questions from his critics.
He proved he can take a punch, he proved he can come back from slight adversity and most important of all, he showed that he can adapt his gameplan flawlessly mid-fight. When the regular striking wasn't working, he transitioned to a clinch and takedown seamlessly and executed it perfectly, which allowed him to open up the cut and give him much-needed confidence. His victory capped off what is certainly the greatest single year of any fighter in MMA history.
There are only a few options for Jones in his next bout. He'll definitely face Rashad Evans next if "Suga" gets past Phil Davis this upcoming January. He could also face Phil Davis depending if he can beat Evans impressively enough to build interest for a pay-per-view bout and the last option is former Pride and Strikeforce champion Dan Henderson, who is patiently waiting to cash in his title shot he earned with his stellar 2011. Whoever this unlucky person is, they'll definitely have their work cut out for them against Jones.
So what do you think, Maniacs?
Did you see anything last night which made you think Jon Jones can be defeated any time in the near future? How impressive was his finish of Machida?
Sound off!

so I guess this is it
Jon Jones is the new Anderson Silva.
He took solid punches, he recovered, kept his cool and composure… he is the real deal man. I can’t think of anyone who could really challenge him.
Damn it, I thought in the first round that Lyoto has this, but man was I wrong. When shit hits the ground you ARE going to get your face cut, Jones is crazy.
A scary, scary man.
all valid points..
But I still don’t fucking like him! He has a certain air about him that makes me pray for his come-uppance…I can wait…and hate. Oh yes…yes I can..

ya Twat! hahaha
I hear you though. Jones is a FREAK and I hate the idea of nobody being able to beat him…but nobody even looks good against him, for now.
Just for kicks, I’d like to see Forrest and Jones.

Not just yet
I, like a lot of people, wanted to see Jones finally get his ass kicked. I didn’t think Lyoto would do it, but I felt he might and could. Jones is good, and has a great balance of skill that I don’t think most fighters in the division can handle…BUT he isn’t at Silva’s level at all. How technical Silva is with his footwork, head movement, striking and how fluid his fighting is is light years ahead of Jones. It’s kinda like saying Kobe is better than Jordan, but we are seeing the 2 of them at about their peak at the same time. Jones doesn’t have any tough challenges in front of him now, and neither does Silva. So if Dana is such a fight fan, and wants to give us the fights we all want to see, then set up the super fight soon!

why do u think silva has pretended to be bones friend? silva is shit scared of bones, bones annihilates silva easily

MY opinion
that’s what I think, and I’m entitled to think it. We can agree to disagree, but it doesn’t matter, because unless the fight happens, it’s just speculation anyway. If Jones fights Evans, then a Jones vs. Silva fight would be perfect for both of them. But we know Dana won’t set it up because there are other people Silva could fight. There isn’t really anyone Silva can fight. Unless the UFC lets Bisping fight Silva, which I would love to see happen, just to watch Bisping get completely embarrassed.
Jones is a great fighter, and will likely defend his titled for a while, but I don’t think he is as good as Silva.
uum silva has to fight chael again, and jones has to fight hendo and shad.

the anderson hah a man that can't knock anybody out
Jones is a coward fighting smaller fighters get your pusssy ass to heavyweight, funny how he was running from lyoto n had to use wrestling to beat him, iam more impressed with machida. Jones is just bigger than his competition, no glory in that. A choke like that was only possible by jones height that the only thing that saves this jones, size, the new anderson hahahahahaha…. Jones the wrestler better than anderson, hahahahahahahahaa…
by Mma fiend on Dec 11, 2011 10:50 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Jones would work Anderson like it was nothing.
Styles make match ups dumbass, not names.
And why do you say it funny he had to use his wrestling to win??? Isnt that what wrestlers do?
You need to quit smoking so much pole brother, its messing with your head.
I have issued my statement. If Chael wins against Silva, im officially the coolest guy on Mania and have the coolest dvd collection. If he loses.....then I shall leave Mania for good....
I think what stood out to me
Was his willingness to listen to his corner. After 1st round GJ told him, every time u throw a leg kick Machida throws that left that has been hitting u. So the punch that setup the choke was a superman type punch. He faked the low kick and came with the punch that beat Machidas left which jones knew was coming. Perfect execution of listening to your corner. Which to many fighters do not do. Shows Jones had the mental game as well as the physical.
Not Yet Challenged
Jones has not yet been challenged. I think Saturday showed some of Jones’ weaknesses, but the fight didn’t go long enough for us to see anything that impressive. The elbow that cut Lyoto was a short elbow, nothing fancy and nothing we haven’t seen before.
Here’s why I’m not yet impressed with Jones:
(1) He seems content to stay in Lyoto’s guard. Lyoto’s Jiu Jitsu isn’t very dangerous—he’s only finished 1 of his 20 opponents by a legitimate submission. The problem: No one in the light heavy weight division right now has jiu jitsu that is very dangerous, and especially not their bottom game.
(2) Jones hasn’t fought anyone that has been able to capitalize on his inexperience/stupidity yet. E.g. Jones drops his hands when he strikes, turns his back, and doesn’t circle out when he retreats, he backs straight up. Problem: No one in the light heavy division is capable enough to capitalize on those mistakes. An earlier lidell or couture would have the ability to close that gap, find openings, and punish Jones.
Unfortunately we’re going to have to wait for new blood in the light heavy division before we get anybody with really solid striking or jiu jitsu skills to test Jones at a higher level—right now, the opponents to show us what he’s made of just aren’t there.
weaknesses
Yes, Jones did eat some good punches, but Machida doesn’t hit that hard. Jones looked horrible when Machida went straight at him. Jones just went straight back with no counters. His stand up is suspect. That said, I don’t see who can beat him right now. His strengths are just too much.
His standup is his weakness
But thats not saying much, cause his standup is pretty good for being his weakness. And he did have a counter for Machida’s staright left. After 1st round GJ told him he is throwing left everytime u throw a leg kick. So the punch that setup that choke was a fake leg kick, which initiated a straight left but jones threw a half superman type punch that connected first. So he adjusted and came up with a perfect idea of how to counter what Machida was doing to him in the first.
Jones is for real, I had my doubts
But he way he handled Machida was perfect, I was routing for Machida even, but I think a lot of the reasons people don’t like Jones is because he is African American I believe there is a lot of racism from the spectators in this sport, I watched the pre-fight interviews with Jones he’s really a nice, humble kid, he deserved this win and he will only get better so after last night, chocking out my boy, I am a fan now, oh and I am a Caucasian, for you morons, that means a white guy..
That's a fairly ignorant statement.
People love Rampage. I don’t think race has anything to do with it. I hate that motherfucker because he comes off as cocky. What you interpret as humbleness and modesty, I interpret as arrogance and cockiness. “it is my destiny to hold the belt for a long time” who the fuck says shit like that? And the comments he made about not knowing anything in mma. Come on man. He obviously knows something. And this crawling nonsense that he does at the begininning of his last few fights just pisses me off. Fuck Jon Jones.

Don't Be Dumb
You’ll be hard pressed to find anyone that doesn’t like him for that reason. Got news for ya… the vast majority of people could care less about race anymore. I don’t care for Jones’ personality, yet look at my avatar.

That is basically why i hate him.
Because hes black….not African American. Hes super talented, nice humble crime fighting guy, tells on his buddies for smoking pot just like how i do…..but I just cant get around that black fucking skin.
I have issued my statement. If Chael wins against Silva, im officially the coolest guy on Mania and have the coolest dvd collection. If he loses.....then I shall leave Mania for good....
Basically the general consensus for me as well.
Wanted to see the guy lose, but the fact is that he is incredible. What a fighter. Props to Machida though, because all though it was the shortest defence, it was the hardest.
Toughest title defence? I think that goes to Shogun.

A lot of people think that Shogun won the first fight with Machida
In fact it caused the biggest public uproar I can remember. Shogun had to fight Shad originally (terrible stylistic mathchup), got injured and had to fight the physical monster who’s killing everybody.
Machida was matched up with a slower striker who likes to brawl and whose biggest win in the UFC was against Chuck on his way out and squeaked by Mark Coleman. Also Shogun and Machida match up well physically and in reach.

I think
Machida’s punch that you say had Jones “reeling” did nothing of the sort unless you mean tripped over his own feet backing up. People want Jones to lose so badly they are actually seeing things that aren’t even there. Does he look dazed even in the gif that you put up?
Doesn’t look like it to me, but I could be wrong.

Jones needs to fight at HW to cement his legacy
I’d have been more impressed if he couldn’t use his physicality to get out of a challenging situation. Other fighters just aren’t as long or tall to lock up standing guillotines because they are evenly matched. I am impressed though and he deserves a lot of credit for that win regardless. Machida was ready to go, ready to retire Rampage was ready to go.

Remember this...
Jones if the first Champ in the LHW division to defend his title on more than one occasion since Chuck Liddell way back in 2006. That division has had a lot of one and done champs. I am not a fan of Jones, but at least the division has someone who can last for a while. It should make things interesting I guess.
Three more title defenses to match Tito’s championship run, and seven more to catch up to Silva. Let’s see what happens.
i think hendo will be his biggest test. if shad can out wrestle him it will be a boring hugfest, but if he stands in front of hendo he is

Henderson has a puncher’s chance and at that, less of a puncher’s chance than either page or Machida had. I don’t even think Jones would bother feeling out a fight with Henderson. He would likely take Hendo down in the first, batter him, nearly finish it towards the end of the first and then swiftly pick up where he left off at the start of the 2nd and finish Hendo off. What’s becoming apparent the more we see Jones fight is that it’s going to take a level of skill we’ve not yet seen in the UFC to beat him. As more super-athletes become incentivized to become MMA fighters at a young age we’ll see a new wave of skill that we’re not used to. Whether you like Jones or not it’s pretty much amazing what he’s been able to accomplish in such a short time in the sport.

fejiou was suppossed to be too good of a striker as well. if you can come into every fight with the same game plan, which basically telegraphs your next move, and still knock fools out, then you are a better striker than most people think. there is no way bones dominates hendo during the first round.

He's still the underdog on the feet against somebody like Silva (nothing to be ashamed of)
Even with great cardio I don’t think that would change and his weakness to submissions lost him fights in Pride (again no shame in getting subbed by prime Nogueira twins).
Today he’s a great fighter who does pull through against the odds sometimes. But he seems better now he’s on therapy than he has been in a long time. He’s a great fighter but I just don’t think he’d be the goat with amazing cardio, but he’d be a contender for it potentially. He’s one of the greatest LHWs ever.

"He's got a great package... and an unusual one!" Joe Rogan (of Lyoto Machida)
As I said in almost every thread; even if Machida enjoys success in the standup Jones will take him down, elbow him, take his will then pound him out or submit him. Although I must admit Machida did better in the first round than I was expecting, although I think that was more due to Jon Jones’ aggression and non-existent jab. He showed he could jab last fight against page I’m unsure as to why he got away from that against Machida… He was probably worried about a straight right counter but that’s why you snap your jab and get out of the way.
It was also good to see Amir Khan lose last night… I personally don’t like his style of fighting; too much running and not enough effective punching.
