X-Reem Couture: Alistair Overeem announces new fight camp

Photo via Fightstyle.net

Former Strikeforce heavyweight champion and K-1 kickboxing kingpin Alistair Overeem, who signed a "long term" deal with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) back in September, has more than just a new promotion to call home.

He's also aligned himself with a new training camp.

Overeem, who will make his Octagon debut at UFC 141 on Dec. 30 in Las Vegas, against former division champion Brock Lesnar, announced on today's MMA Hour that he is now a member of "Sin City's" Xtreme Couture camp.

Apparently the Glory wasn't Golden enough for him.

Or it could be the breach of trust he alluded to in a public statement following his split with the Golden Glory fight camp, a place he's called home his entire career.

No longer.

Now, "Demolition Man" will be rubbing elbows with Randy Couture, Forrest Griffin, Gray Maynard and more. Anyone think this will help his wrestling defense?

How about it Maniacs, how will this help (or hinder) "The Reem's" success?

A couple months is not enough time

As Daley, HArdy, BJ Penn and many other non wrestlers tried to do with GSP two to three months is not going to improve his skills. It may give him things to look for but he is not going to be much better overall than he already is.

No but it will help him alot in straight MMA techniques. I think GG was a great place but Xtreme Couture is so MMA fucntional this will only make Overeem better

With this much time will he be able to actually be able to use the technique he is learning

or will he resort to using what has got him here, It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks?

what about new kicks?

I think more than anything, they’ll refine what works for him and tweak things so that he can handle the American wrestling thats been fucking every foreign fighter that comes over

Down the road I think you and ANS are right but as far as this fight I don’t think there is enough time to change anything that Reem will bring besides as he noramlly would practicing stopping the takedown being his main focus maybe there is a couple tweaks that Xtreme can help Reem with that he already doesn’t know.

dont get me wrong

I dont in anyway think, Overreem will be able to stop Brock from doing what Brock wants to do. Maybe if he was facing a lesser caliber wrestler. I do think that Brock will take him down and smash him, repeatly. Overreem and JDS would be fun when they both lose though

great move by the reem on so many different levels!

obvious reason is wrestling: not realy wrestling but more specifically mma wrestling. and thats useful to any outsider entering the ufc which is flooded with top level wrestlers in every division.

dirty boxing: reem has a great tai clinch, randy can add some greco clinch dirty boxing in the reems arsenal

cage tactics. randy is a pioneer in this department

mma cardio. golden glory training is more geared towards k-1…this should def improve his cardio

ju jitsu: im sure you get better jits instruction tailored for mma at coutures then you do in holland,

what i really like about this move is that he chose to join a camp without any other prominent ufc heavyweights. so there wont be any quote “teamates” that we have to worry about him not wanting to fight. i love it

smart move by the reem to give himself his best shot at finding success in the ufc

This is true

But what I ment was a HW that can really test Reem in the areas he needs to be tested, I’m sure they will brin in a HW wrestler at least I jsut don’t think it will help him much with in the amount of time he has tell they fight. It will be interesting and another fight I can’t wait for

but a nice well placed knee to brocks jaw will sure help alistar regardless of how much time he has to train his wrestling!

fyi: no camp really has more then 2 top heavyweights anyway…couture will be able to provide him real hw wrestlers that they bring in as training parthners. the only thing that they arent mma fighters, they will be pure wrestlers!

by John G. on Nov 7, 2011 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

Yes and Brock will have sparring partners, I just don't see eithers truelly preparing the other for their potential strength

An d I agree Reem has the ability when he has energy to KO anybody if he connects this includes the knee.

And I'm not saying Xtreme won't help Reem

I just think that it won’t be as a big a factor “this fight” as many are thinking. I think Reem still needs to KO Brock early otherwise he’s in trouble regardless. In the future being in Xtreme’s camp will pay off I just think it’s not enough time to help him much in this one?

With this much time a don't see them cahnging to much of Reems game

Of coarse they could go over Brock’s tendency’s and finding ways to attach them with tactics that Reem might not of used before but with that comes a bigger chance that Reem makes a mistake.

What I can see Maybe Reem doing early is trying to get the fight to the ground himself and catch Brock by surprise much like randy tried in his fight, many are expecting Reems stratigy to be as simple as keep it standing and Reem being the aggressor and going for his own takedown is a stratigy I could see randy trying to get Reem to use and even being effective. I just think after the first minute or two of the fight Reem will go back to what he has done for many years with success for the most part.

I dont think the questionis so much how will overeem defend against takedowns

But how will brock respond to punches from overeem? I think overeems takedpwn defense is going to be good enough

by THORAZINE on Nov 7, 2011 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

Brock responds fine to strikes

That is unless his takedown has failed, once Brocks offence fails that’s when he panics and doesn’;t know how to react. But he will eat strikes to go for the takedown and has. Against Carwin he had a couple takedown attempts(was really close on one) before he paniced.

With Brock i think it’s more if you can stop his attack his defence is very suspect.

I can agree with that

And I wasnt impressed with overeems standup against werdum, I think brock has good standup skills but he has a huge psyc issue to get over. Overeem has decent takedown defense I can remember that from his 205lbs days. if brock takes him down I think he gets back up

Terrible Choice

I think Jacksons would’ve been a much better choice with Carwin and Shaub there who will not be champions but would have the size and skills to be great wrestling training partners and Jacksons is known for good endurance beside Garcia.

Maynard got outworked because he wasn’t as fresh as Frankie.

Bottom Line Jacksons, Alliance, ATT. or BlackZillians would all have been better moves to make.

Listen, guys. You can take all these guys with their eighth education and their gold teeth trying to sit around and break down a fight. This is the most unsophisticated and un-well-thoughtout thing you need to do in life. thats true, but

you dont pick a gym based on what you could bring to them, you pick a gym based on what they can do for you…brock didnt start training with pat barry so he could teach him some wrestling, even though that may have been a by product of that relationship, he started training with him to improve his striking

Overeem isn’t suddenly going to have the skills to stop a powerful takedown from a wrestler. At his age he’s pretty much at his best right now, his best won’t be enough against Brock.

Very good choice as Handy is an excellent wrassler. However, I don’t think there’s enough time for him to learn how to properly stuff Brocks takedowns.

Good move

There are others good camps – ATT, Jacksons, etc. But it isn’t like Couture’s is some terrible choice. Very, very good idea to get out of Europe and to start working where the best camps are.

good choice but probably not best in terms of it being in Vegas. too many distractions, i mean it's Vegas....

I think AKA would’ve been a better choice. main camp in san jose, there’s nothing in san jose to distract him and the stable of fighters is not too shabby either ;)

That was me damnit!

Gimme my recognition.

Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen 2 in Brazil...Anderson defeats Chael in front of a raucous crowd...Chael bows to Anderson...a plethora of notable Brazilian fighters join Anderson and camp in the octagon to celebrate the victory...the Nogs and Cigano are there, Aldo is there, Feijao is there, Shogun is there...even Wanderlei is there...Joe Rogan commences the post-fight interview as usual...Anderson Silva retires as the MW champion in is home country of Brazil!

It disappoints me when some vocal people in cyberspace hide behind a pseudonym and make malicious and baseless attacks against athletes that have never failed a screen for banned substances. These keyboard toxicologists think that they can merely look at an athlete and "know" that so-and-so is a "juicer." There is a term for that. It's called "delusions of grandeur," and medication may help. (Dr. Johnny Benjamin)
